I have a Linux box with a mystery partition on it. I am running
RedHat 6.1 and fdisk indicates that the harddrive is broked apart into
3 partitions. This is what fdisk says:
Dev Boot Start End Blocks ID System
hda1 * 4 775 6201058 83 Linux
hda2 4 784 6273382 5 Extended
hda5 776 784 72261 82 Linux Swap

What is this hda2? How can 2 partitions overlap like that?
There is no mention of /dev/hda2 in my fstab file. How do I mount it
if its even mountable? It this an indication of a corrupted partition
table?

I am having no problems with the system right now. Just curious as to
what this thing is.

Thanks in advance for your help

I have tried the SuSE sax program but prefer XF86Setup. The drawback of
XF86Setup is that you must get the mouse to work on the first page using
keyboard commands. Write down the commands from the page that shows
them. Your mouse is /dev/psaux and protocol is PS2. Worth a try.

You have setup your drive with an extended partition type (5). Within
that extended partition you have a Linux ext2 partition and a Linux swap
partition.

An alternate setup would be a primary partition type for the Linux ext2,
and another primary partition type for the Linux swap partition.

You can make up to 4 primary partitions (hda1,hda2,hda3,hda4) so any
extended partition must start off at hda5. That's why you have no hda3
and hda4.

Do the math:

hda1 6201058
hda5 72261
____________
     6273319

+ 63 blocks extended partition overhead
____________
hda2 6273382

i'm not sure if this is the right newsgroup but i'll try:
I have to use sendmail on a machine for a php class that i give. The

Can somebody tell me what to put in a crontab so that the sendmail

I didn't actually download them - they came off the Red Hat CD which is why
I assumed they were OK.
Only thing is with this being a fairly old version I'm not sure I can get

Subject: kernel kill, installation failed, where to now?
Date: Mon, 23 Oct 2000 21:02:07 GMT

I tried to install red hat 6.2 for the first time
and it failed. I use one half of my hard disk for
windows and was planning on using the rest for
linux, so the attempted installation was done on
a clean 7.5 gigs of hard disk. the problem is
that the lilo boot comes up each time and makes
me select dos or linux, but if I choose linux
then it says that there was a kernel panic and
attempted to kill, but if i choose dos then it
loads windows just fine. this isn't really a
problem except that it won't let me re-install
linux, it won't accept my bootable CD-Rom either.
I am at a loss as to what to do, should i use
fdisk and try to get rid of all the linux
partially completed install or what? Any help
here would be great.

G'day all.

Subsequent to my previous question (broken ppp) I'm now connecting -
about half the time. The remainder I get knocked back by the server.

After the completion of handshaking, it goes through the
username/password routine without problems, every time; then my ISP's
server asks what type of connection I want to create (PPP, SLIP, etc)
requiring the input of a "1" to create a PPP connection. Sometimes the
connection stays alive long enough for wvdial to start up a ppp
session on spec (which works fine).

I figure to solve the problem I can either reduce the time delay to
automatically start the ppp session, or have the script respond "1" to
the prompt. How do I do the first? To do the second, I assume I add a
line to the wvdial.conf file, but how do I figure out what the prompt
of the ISP's server is, to tell the conf file?

What do you mean, when you say, that it won't accept you CD? Does it not
boot or does it give a kernel error too?

Installing rh6.2 should not be a problem, although a linux partition
already exists (I don't see how it could be).

Have you tried booting with a bootdisk?

What is the exact kernel error at bootup?

You could try upgrading to the newest kernel update, if you are able to
boot to linux with a boot disk or some other way.

Do your BIOS support HD's of 7.5Gb?

I installed slackware7.1 and configured LILO. I installed LILO into the
superblock of the root linux partition (/dev/hda1) and make the
partition is bootable. But it doesn't work. Do I have to put LILO into
MBR?

BTW, there is other OS in the machine. Linux is the only one.

Thanks.

Actually Bellsouth distributes NTS Linux client on their CD. So this is
not the problem. The problem is modem drivers. Having a working client
with a non working modem is not much good. BTW, by all reports the NTS
client is buggy, slow and hungry. Better to use rp-pppoe or pppoed. So a
non-issue.

No problem. Your rescue diskette should contain a kernel with support
for your specific SCSI card, SCSI support, and SCSI tape support either
directly in the kernel, or available as modules. Obviously, your main
system contains these things as you were able to make a tape. What you
need to do is either compile a custom kernel with these things built in
directly, or make these modules available to your rescue system.
Copying /lib/modules/2.2.X/scsi/ to your rescue system's
/lib/modules/2.2.X/scsi/ may work. Actually, I'd build a custom kernel
for your rescue system; it's a great learning experience if you've never
done it before. HTH,

Linux FDISK is as dangerous as anything if you make a typo, while the
Win/DOS/OS2 FDISKs cannot do what I described. Sector level editing
simply allows no margin for mistakes.

When you take care to place any phantom partitions virtually adjacent to
the one recorded in the partition table, the device names for Linux
partitions will not be affected. If all Linux partitions are /dev/xd5x
or greater this shouldn't be difficult to accomplish. What could be
troublesome is if /etc/fstab has references to a vfat or hpfs that comes
or goes when you change the table manually.

Sometimes YAHD is simply not feasible. No room on SCSI cable, no more
IRQ's for more host adapters, lack of case space, no money, etc can
easily prevent adding that additional device. Conversely, experiments
commonly require a standard frame of reference in order to make valid
comparisons. An additional HD can invalidate comparability. What I
described was simply a way to enable something otherwise difficult or
impossible.
