Only a problem if you use one of the stupid distros that need a DOS
environment to boot from as WindowsME doesn't have the ability to boot
into DOS therefore you couldn't get to Linux. Stay away from those
types of Distros (phat linux being one of them I believe) and you can
get by this problem with ease).

Just so you know, Windows should never know your Linux partition
exists. One of the ways (if not the only way) this can happen is if you
use the DOS fdisk program to make the linux partitions instead of using
Linux's fdisk during the Linux installation. Doing this tells Windows
there is a new partition and it needs to be aware of it and part of that
process is assigning a drive letter to it. If Windows can actually see
your Linux partition you did not install Linux correctly and will be in
for it if you accidentally erase Linux b/c of Windows being too stupid
(or being too elitist) to realize another OS is running the system.

Subject: HELP--ZIP DRIVE
Date: Tue, 24 Oct 2000 03:31:24 GMT

Okay, there must be an answer for this somewhere. I have a USB
Microtech International Zip Drive. Now, I know that the iomegas are
working and according to www.linux-usb.org this one does too.
However, apparantly it needs to be a SCSI devices. I have put

/dev/sda4 /mnt/zip ext2 noauto,rw,user,nodev,exec
/dev/sda4 /mnt/fatz vfat noauto,rw,user,nodev,noexec

into /etc/fstab and then put a link onto my desktop (like my cdrom).
However, when I click on the link I get...

mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/sda4 as a block device
(maybe 'insmod driver')

Now, I have the usb-storage configured as a module as well as the
generic scsi. Everything else you can think of is a 'y' in the
compliled kernel. On bootup I do see

insmod /lib/modules/2.2.17/usb/usb-storage.o

What gives? What will make this stupid drive work. Why is there no
HOW-TO for this...surely someone must be working on this project...who
is it and where do they post their know how!!????!!!????

Thanks,

Dan

Hi,

since upgrading from kernel 2.2.xx to 2.4.0-test9=20
I don't get sound working while looking TV. It worked
fine before. Do anyone have an idea?

It doesn't work neither if I link all modules statically=20
into the kernel nor if loaded dynamically by modutils.

My system: Hauppauge WinTV/Radio /w BTTV878, Philips
PAL, Philips Tuner, MSP3400; Athlon 800; SB Live! Value;
Geforce 2 GTS; 512 MB; Kernel 2.4.0-Test9; OSS 3.9.3r

Hi,
I am trying to get nfs working between two computers, both of them running
linux redhat 7 and windows 98.
One PC is setup as a nfs server and when i try to mount the shared directory
on my client machine, it gives me and error saying that permission denied.
On my server i have edited my /etc/exports file.
And on my client pc i have edited my /etc/fstab file.
I was wondering do i need to recompile the kernel so it will support nfs
file system or does it support nfs by default?
How do i see the shared nfs directory on my windows machine? Is there a
windows nfs client?

thanks alot

No, I'm sorry, if you didn't save the previous XF86Config file, it's not
easy to go back. You can either locate the problem and solve it, or
rerun xf86config until you have a working solution. I did this way back
so often that I started to try and understand the XF86Config file. It
takes some time, but after a while you can solve problems far easier. If
you tell me what your problem is (startx 2> X_error_log) and post the
result here, I may be able to help you.

Actualy the EASIEST way would be to install just your windows disk
only as master. do not install disk for linux YET. just do normal
win 98 installation. after you are done with it unplug windows disk
(with power off:) and plug in the linux drive as master again.
Install linux with lilo, etc.
Once everything is happy plug in the windows hard disk AS SLAVE.
reboot to linux, edit /etc/lilo.config and add this lines:

other = /dev/hdb1
  label = windows
  map-drive = 0x80
  to = 0x81
  map-drive = 0x81
  to = 0x80

where /dev/hdb1 is your windows drive first partition (you can confirm
this with fdisk). just run lilo to update it, reboot again and thats
it.
now you have two completely independant installations. you can remove
any one of those hard disks and everything still works.
All lilo will do is swap two hard disks in bios when you select windows.

cheers,
mike

 WR> Any hints?

Yes, assuming its in its own directory. cd to one level up so you can
see the directory, and as root, do a

chown -R user:user dirname

I think the -R is correct, you want to change the directory, and all its
contents recursively so that it belongs to the user named, see 'man
chown' to be sure.

Then, to autorun it at boot time, put something like this at the bottom
of your rc.local file:

cd /path/to/setiathome
su -c "./setiathome -nice 20 >/dev/null" user &

That way its automaticly started by a user that has perms to run it, its
quiet, at that level of nice you won't ever notice its running. The
major effect will be seen in xosview and such as the cpu will always be
at 100%. Make sure you have a decent cooler on it, it will keep it well
warmed up!

you can compile and load as a module ip_masq_ipsec.o, but RH for some reason
doesn't build it by default.
When I loaded this, things worked a little better, but I still cannot use my

Surely with menuconfig, this is a fairly easy task. Then you can just do:
make dep clean bzImage modules modules_install
And leave it for a while as it compiles, do your LILO stuff, and reboot. Not
_that_ difficult, really, is it?

Im performing regular Backups with tar,
when restoring from tape with a rescue disk, everything seems to work
just fine. Only when I do the backups with :

tar -c -v -M -b 126 -V "LEVEL0" -f /dev/st0 -g /var/adm/Backup

it claims that there had been errors during backup, but doesnt tell me
what kind of errors this should be. Can this be because of special files
that should be excluded (in /dev /tmp or sth. like that).

any ideas ?

If you created a bootdisk utilizing a crashed source (e.g. HD)
the bootdisk may be corrupt. There is no _sure_ answer to this
kind of question.

Well you have overcome the first obstacle. I have no experience
with disk-arrays; but suggest reading the following documentation:

  man modeprobe
  man depmod
  /usr/src/linux/Documentation/modules.txt
  /lib/modules/KERNEL-VERSION/modules.dep
