I've installed linux on some 486s.
If you had your whole old hard drive filled with windows (likely),
then linux will politely leave the existing partitions alone....and have
no room to install. This is true even if you reformat the drive. Your
win partition will still fill the drive....just with 0s. You can use
fdisk from either DOS or linux to deallocate the dos partition and make
room for linux. Some distributions will do this for you if you tell
them to use the whole computer driver.
The 8 MB is small for any modern OS, including linux. You may be
able to pick up more memory really cheap at a computer show or used
computer shop. (I bought my last few 8 MB sticks for $6 each, and saw 4
MB sticks for $2 each at the last show.) This upgrade is REALLY worth
while. If you only have 8 MB, you will be unhappy with slow GUI
performance....but using a small windows manager might offset the
slowness enough for some people.
Compaqs of this era usually needed parity ram. The compaq site
has a lot of old manuals on it, so you may be able to check there to
find out what video chipset your machine uses, what RAM you can install,
etc. (Qvision is the Etang driver, I think wpi? mumble version, and
would be a good guess.)
the best distributions for a floppy install are Debian and
Slackware. Both have a basic distribution that you can load from
floppies (but you may have to make the floppies by reading a cdrom on
another machine if you use either an offical version of the above or a
cheapbytes version). Once you get the basic system installed, you can
set up a network connection to continue installing from another computer
that has a cdrom drive. If you do not have a network interface card
(NIC), you can still do this over serial or parallel ports....but no
distribution sets this up for you (Debian has a lower obstacle than
others here). Most major distributions (including Suse, RedHat,
Slackware and Debian), will help you install from another computer's
cdrom drive. I do this a lot. But, you do have to have a NIC to do it
"automatically". Debian has a basic install of about 11 floppies.

Same problem as everyone else on this thread! I've got an ATI Rage Fury

that ATI chipsets arn't supported well by Corel. Anyone got any work

I found my problem
On the hdc i lose all my partitions.
For repair that, i configure hdc samething with hda (fdisk /dev/hda -ul )
See my hda
Disk /dev/hda: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 19852 cylinders
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 63 33263 16600+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hda2 33264 20010815 9988776 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 33327 1057391 512032+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hda6 1057455 1320479 131512+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hda7 1320543 20010815 9345136+ fd Linux raid autodetect
And now configure hdc with fdisk (fdisk /dev/hdc ).
Disk /dev/hdc: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 19852 cylinders
Units = sectors of 1 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hdc1 * 63 33263 16600+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hdc2 33264 20010815 9988776 5 Extended
/dev/hdc5 33327 1057391 512032+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hdc6 1057455 1320479 131512+ fd Linux raid autodetect
/dev/hdc7 1320543 20010815 9345136+ fd Linux raid autodetect
And when i have two set of similar disk partitions i use de command
(raidhotadd /dev/md0 /dev/hdc1)
(raidhotadd /dev/md1 /dev/hdc6) etc ...
After i can see in my /proc/mdstat
Personalities : [raid1]
read_ahead 1024 sectors
md0 : active raid1 hda1[0] hdc1[1] 16512 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md2 : active raid1 hda5[0] hdc5[1] 511936 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md1 : active raid1 hdc6[1] hda6[0] 131392 blocks [2/2] [UU]
md3 : active raid1 hda7[0] hdc7[1] 9345024 blocks [2/2] [UU]
unused devices: <none>
My raid are come back .
I conclude when you change one hard disk on linux raid software or
just for resync your raid. The first step is to check your two disks.
If you have two disks with same sizes and same partitions you
can use comand:
(raidhotadd /dev/md(x) /dev/hd(xx))

Hi there,
Mandrake ships distributions compiled specially for 486. They also have ISO
images. Check them at http://www.linux-mandrake.com

This question has been asked so many times, I'm sure it is a
FAQ at RedHat. To get to rpm-4.x you first upgrade to rpm-3.0.5.
Then you can upgrade to rpm-4.x.

You might want to try a Debian distribution.
My perception is that Debian by default installs
fewer apps and services by default than SUSE or RedHat.

Have you tried partitioning the 2nd hd with 'fdisk /dev/hdb' (or fdisk
/dev/sdb if it's a scsi drive)?
if that worked but you can't access it add the drive in your /etc/fstab

Login as root.
chmod 755 staroffice.bin
./staroffice.file.name.bin/net
Install it where you want it.
ln -s /path/to/soffice /usr/bin/soffice
login as user and enter "soffice" at a command line to install the user

I am trying to get a bootnet to work with Compaq EN (P733 128M 10G).
Building FD works but as I try to select network adapter (Intel PRO/100) I
get an error (init %m) under Alt-F4.
I tried bootnet.img with 6.2 and get a better message :-> Device or

What's the trick to getting the network card to work on a Compaq EN?
I've loaded and run this on a DEC PC and two HP's, of the Pentium 100-166
class, so I know the drill. This seems to be something unique with the
network adapter in this beast.
Thanks for any assistance.

Also once you make the partition with fdisk, you need to format it in some
way, using mkfs. then you can either mount it manually using the mount
command or add it to your /etc/fstab file. If you decide to add the line to
fstab, add it exactly like entered for /dev/hda except for the mount point
(dont make it /).

Hi,
I'm trying to get RealPlayer audio/video streaming on my
RedHat Linux 7.0 intel system, a dual processor Dell PIII
Precision 610 with an integrated Crystal CS4237B soundchip
(soundblaster compatible).
The error message from the Real Audio 7.01 Unix player is:
"Cannot open audio device, another application may be using it"
How can I determine what other application, if any, is indeed using
the audio device? Is there a test program which will tell me
whether the problem is a hardware or software problem?
I have RealPlayer working fine on RedHat 7 on my laptop, so I know
this is possible as long as the hardware is supported.
Thanks,
Charlie

To play audio cds: use a cd player (probably came with your install)
To play mp3s: any player you download will probably work, although some are
better, like XMMS and it comes in a rpm i think too.
Configuring your sound card, should be easy, cause I did it a long time ago,
but I dont remember now :) sorry.
