do you have apache configured to use the .htaccess file, including the proper
directives (using AllowOverride in the <Directory> or <Location>
sections) in your httpd.conf? Depending upon which version of 1.3.x apache,
srm.conf is deprecated, but you should still be able to use it if you wish.
Otherwise, everything now goes in httpd.conf.
are you using modules? do you have mod_auth being loaded?

I think you will find it very hard to prevent the students from being
able to reach some kind of prompt. You can make it a little hard for
them, but the smart ones will figure it out anyway.
I would simply create a user "student", and let the machine boot up
without X windows automatically started. Post a small sing on the
machine telling the users to login as "student", with whatever
password you give it; the student account can run startx in .login and
then run the citrix client as the last command in .xinitrc, as if it
was your window manager; thus when you exit the citrix client X will
exit.
The students will figure out how to root the machine, and how to
reboot and type "linux single" at the LILO prompt, and other ways of
using the machine. I would advise not going down the path of patching
the various exploits that the kids will come up with. Instead, just
acknowledge that it can be done, and take the fun out of it.
But you should make some attempt at protection against people running
a fake screen that will look like the citrix client and capture
passwords. A weak way to do this would be to make an easy way to
completely re-install the system (say have a disk image that you can
restore from) and do this automatically on a regular basis. If you
can make it work, try making a bootable CD out of the linux
installation you settle on, and leave the machines with no harddrive
at all, and have them reboot with each login/logout. (Do the machines
have enough memory to run X and the citrix client without swapping ?)
Just a few thoughts.

Hi,
Well, if you can't boot linux from a floppy then a linux
boot floppy can't help much.
You said: > The DOS version of FDisk doesn't work,
Hmm... In what way does DOS fdisk not "work"?
when I select "Delete DOS Partition or Logical DOS Drive"
from the DOS fdisk main menu I get this screen:
========================================================
Delete DOS Partition or Logical DOS Drive
Current fixed disk drive: 2
Choose one of the following:
1. Delete Primary DOS Partition
2. Delete Extended DOS Partition
3. Delete Logical DOS Drive(s) in the Extended DOS Partition
4. Delete Non-DOS Partition
Enter choice: [ ]
Press Esc to return to FDISK Options
========================================================
The "4. Delete Non-DOS Partition" selection worked for me.

You're welcome, and, not really, only the standard advice: determining
what essential services that are part of the distribution need to be
on the /usr file system. The disk space requirements should remain
steady as long as that distribution is installed. There are a lot of
programs that require the X libs, btw, even using a terminal. And
news and mail spools often get their own file system, because the
amount of disk space they use varies considerably. Any
non-distribution packages, which are the hardest to restore since they
don't have drop-in replacements on the CD, can reside on /opt or
/usr/local, potentially on different drive(s), and that minimizes the
chances that they'll be affected by the next upgrade.

I am new at this myself, but until you get into the x86 configuration
file and fix the resolution, I believe you can hit control alt and
minus (on the keypad) simultaneously to cycle throught the resolutions
you have available. Hopefully, one of them will do it.

(No, his command is correct.)
If you have the right modules loaded or compiled in (the scsi core, your
SCSI host adapter, and the SCSI tape module st) it should have worked.
Check your system log file and/or console, where you should see any
low-level device error messages. Also, did you watch the tape drive when
you issued the command, and see if any lights changed? Is your cabling
and SCSI termination OK? Does each device have a unique SCSI ID?
How about "mt -f /dev/nst0 status" - does it also get an error?

Date: Thu, 26 Oct 2000 00:47:32 GMT
I'd appreciate any advice you've got on this one.
I'm trying to configure my system so that I can use gnome by way of a
pc x-server (currently trying xwin32).
This would be done through a ssh1 connection over the internet via DHCP.
Despite necessary modifications to inetd.conf , xaccess , and xdm-config
I've been unable to connect successfully - neither rsh nor rexec
connections have worked either through these are enabled.
a few questions :
Is ssh1 capable of x-forwarding ? - this is enabled on our system, but
doesn't seem to be working.
what permissions should I check to be sure standard users can access the
system in this way. The fact that rsh & rexec are
rejected by the host makes me suspect I may not have permissions set
properly. - I can't login via xwin32 as su to compare. My company had
our hosting provider install and configure this system. They really
screwed up the ftp config - so I don't expect they did any better here.
if ssh1 won't allow me to use gnome or x-windows , what's involved in
configuring telnet. I'd enabled this in inetd.conf recently , but can't
login.
any advice , or leads on resources in this area would be great
thanks

The problem is with you :)
You have to type the following when you log in as root:
$ su -
passwd: <secret>
# Xconfigurator
It may probe your video card and install it properly, or you may have to
install your video card manually.

restart syslogd each time.
