[EMAIL PROTECTED]
Here's my book,
I have an eMachines 533id which I tried to install RH 6.1 (and now 6.2) and
Windoz on. I am a newbie to Linux. After trying off and on for the past
several months to get this machine working right, I think I'm at the end of
my rope. I had the following issues come up:
1: I used the Fips utility to get room on the 15 GB drive for the linux
partition. I followed the instructions to the letter after reading and
re-reading them for a week or so... all went well, until I got the the
disk druid part of the graphic install. (BTW, the 533id has a Samsung DVD
drive on it, seemed to work fine, until recently, now seems to have much
trouble reading m$ format cdroms after the computer has been running a
while. :-(
2: Disk druid displayed the correct information on available space, the
Win98 partition, etc, but it wouldn't let me fill the rest of the drive
with Linux. I would enter the partition sizes correctly (/boot, /, swap)
but when I wanted to do the last partition, it would say it was too big.
OK, says I, what about a 1 MB partition, even though you show 6 GB left?
No? STILL TO BIG?! WHY?! WHY?! WHY?!
After messing with it for a while, I found I could install everything with
about 3% of the drive left unfilled, according to disk druid.
3: After doing a custom install of KDE, I finally got X started following
the instructions and downloading the rpms from the Intel web site. The
533id has an Intel i810 chipset for the video. Edited the XF86Config file
with a bit of educated trial and error, and have no problems. It runs X
well, I think.
4: My unresolved Linux problems are:
A: Can't get the printer to work. I seemed to remember reading somewere
that the
Lexmark Z11 won't work with Linux, and I didn't want to bother with
trying, so I
have been trying to get my HP 500C working, but no luck. Again,
WHY?!!!
B: The (win-, soft-, flex-) modem MIGHT work, as there apears to be
drivers
available from Olitec that MIGHT make it work. The modem is a
Conexant pci
56k 'flex' modem, and is an HSF type. I downloaded the drivers to a
floppy disk
(DOS formated, using my win98 to get it, but I can't get the file
off the floppy
using the M Commands. So I don't know if I can get the modem to
work yet.
You need to have at least the 2.2.14 linux kernel (RH 6.2) installed
on the
system for the drivers, so they say.
C: I can get the sound (a self-added Creative Ensoniq ES1371) and the
screen savers to work when running the KDE desktop, but not
Gnome. Why?
D: I read something recently that says I can get the AGFA USB scanner to
work,
but I haven't tried that yet.

I got frustrated with my first attempt at getting linux working on my 15 GB
drive, so I reformated it and tried to reinstall win98 from the eMachines
Restore disk, but ever since then, I have had trouble with the drive
geometery being read correctly. I have the bios set to LBA mode, but it
only allows a 100% partition to be 14.2 GB even though Win98 reports I have
a 15.3GB in System Properties. When the drive is set to non LBA mode, the
disk geometery is not reported correctly. I ran Maxtor's hard drive utility
on it and it didn't report any errors, but still only saw 14.2 GB avalible.

I next used the Partit free ware utility (I am rather poor/cheap) and that
showed that when I tried to set up a windows partition, I would get
overlapping partions! I tried to manually correct the overlaps, to no
avail. I have been able to get a single windows partion on the drive at
the reduced size, but I feared for its stability. I decided to install the
RH 6.2 on the smaller 2GB drive which was a complete success the first
time. When I disconnected that one and reconnected the large drive again
to get back to Win98, Win98 gets to the complete desktop, then when I try
to do anything, ie, click on a program or the start button, everything
freezes. That disk must be toast or something.
I probably did not delete the partitions correctly after I had used the
Fips utility, and now have hosed the drive, unless I can find another way
to fix it (Partition Magic?).
Sorry this is sooooo long! I needed to vent my frustrations. My wife is
pissed that 'her' computer isn't working.
My advice to someone looking at an eMachines system with an eye to linux,
Buy A Dell.

My 15 GB hard drive only reads 14.2 GB now after trying to dual boot with
RH 6.1 and winblows 98, but I may have messed up re-partioning after trying
the Fips utility...

Hallo,

i installed kde2 rc 2 (thanks to all developers for their great work !)
on Suse 7.0. After this i had deleted kde1 with yast. When i now start
linux with graphical login (also when i start it manually from the
console with startx) i have only the choice between failsave and kde1.
i looked in the susewmconfig file and so on. There is the kde2 and
startkde entry. So i don't now how to handle the choices.

Thanks for your help and a happy weekend.

Yeah, best to do this from a rescue system (on a flop).

I really don't care what everything says, my system (I did not insatll
NT on it myself, it came pre-installed) has LILO in the MBR and I boot
NT from it (the actual NT bootloader is in the bootsector of /dev/hda1)

Anyone help me with why I have no sound with the Gnome desk top and when I
change to KDE, the sound works fine. This is the second install on my
machine were this has happend. 1st time, I did a custom KDE install, this
time, a Gnome work station.
PC is eMachines 533id, 533MHz Cel., with an Ensoniq PCI sound card. In
Gnome, I tried to use the sndconfig utility. It detected the card fine,
and the last screen showed that the configuration failed and showed five or
six directories/files related to the failure.
After I mearly switched to KDE, it worked without any extra messin'. I
like the look of Gnome a bit better than KDE and would like to use it, but
I want sound too.
Also, the same thing happens with the screensavers and themes.
Is there some kind of hard or symbolic link I need to do?
Thanks for any assistance.

I've just installed kde2. Very impressive it is too, and I'm pretty
much a full-time GNOME user. However, I've had a couple of mandrake
specific problems. Can anyone help?

1. In order to install kdebase I had to install mandrake_desk and now
the only option available in either kdm or gdm is kde. I no longer
have the option of starting GNOME, WindowMaker, BlackBox,
Enlightenment, etc. This is a big problem for me. I use GNOME as my
regular desktop---kde is something I use only about one third of the
time in fact, although with kde2 that may change. I also fairly
regularly start a vanilla X session with just Blackbox, or bask in
the visual glory that is WindowMaker. Can anyone offer any advice as
to what I need to tweak or install to get kdm and gdm back to
offering the full range of installed options?

2. I am still using XFree86 3.3.6. kdemultimedia appears to require
XFree86 4.0.1 (well, it says it requires libXaw.so.7 and
XFree86-libs-4.0.1 seems to be its home). I have tried previously
using XFree86 4 and it was not a happy experience for me so I'm
stuck with 3.3.6. What would anyone recommend I do to get
kdemultimedia installed? Is compiling from source my only option,
or is there an rpm which does not depend on libXaw.so.7? If I
install from source, can anyone advise on the configure options for
maximum compatability with the kde2 rpms?

I am using Mandrake 7.1 with all security updates installed, the
latest version of Helix GNOME (including all most recent updates), and
the kde2 rpms downloaded from the Mandrake 7.2beta ftp site.

Thank you in advance,

Best,

Darren

There are the manpages, they describe the exact syntax and a (sometimes
cryptical) description of the usage of a command.

So suppose you want to set time you could try man time
Damn it not what you want, it's a C-call
but then there's the see also part of the manpage :-)
it also makes notice of a date(1)

so you try man 1 date

And there it is.

You can always try man -k time (a lot of hits, have to try the ones that
have a desciption you like)
(you will need to have run makewhatis just once to ensure the -k switch
will work)

These numbers are hardly ever correct. As long as the
heads/cylinders/sector numbers are correct I wouldn't worry to much

You will always have confusion due to the question:what is 1 MB?
is it 1000 or 1024 KBytes? and 1 KB? (1000 bytes or 1024 bytes) (the
1024 is correct, but only because the unit is bytes, otherwise it should
be 1000)

try the next: (540 * 1000 * 1000 ) / (1024 * 1024)

That's where the numbers originate from.
Your drive says it's 540 MegaBytes, but is actually 540 Million bytes
which is equal to 515 MegaBytes (just a sales trick, it appears your
drive is larger than it actuallly is.)

Yeah, except that not the entire space is used.
There's nothing wrong with that, but why leave space unpartitioned?

PS. run the v(verify) switch while in fdisk, and this will show up.

Indeed, and fdisk states this explicitely : reboot!

after that the partition table is re-read and all should function again.
Messing with your partitiontable is one of the few things that still
require a good reboot.
