So go download minicom from wherever, presumably the docs don't say
"just ignore this bit and do your own thing".

Are you sure that minicom isn't on the CD that your distro came on?

Subject: red hat 6.2 router rebooting randomly- is it bad ram?
Date: Fri, 27 Oct 2000 11:45:06 -0500

It is a p100, 16M ram, running Red Hat 6.2 installed with the default
server options. I am using it as a router on my cable modem connection
for my Windows computer. It is doing ip forwarding, and running sendmail,
named, and httpd.

It runs fine, but when I start sucking a lot of data through it to my
Windows computer, like surfing a lot of pages very quickly, or downloading
a fie, the Linux computer either reboots or locks up. At first it was
rebooting more than locking up, but now it seems to lock up most of the
time.

The errors when it locks up look like this:

"Unable to handle kernel paging request at virtual address blah blah blah"
Then a bunch of registers,
then a bunch of stacks,
then some call traces,
then a line that says "Code: 00 00 00 00 00 ..."
then "Aiee, killing interrupt handler
Kernel panic: Attempted to kill the idle task
In swapper task - not syncing"

So far I have gotten one expert opinion that this is caused by bad simms-
but I have switched one for the other, and switched banks from 0 to 1 and
the problem stays exactly the same, where I thought it might change the
symptoms somewhat. I don't have any other simms to test with, so I am
reluctant to plunk down money for new simms if that may not be the problem.
But if other experts agree, I guess that is my only course of action.

Thank you for any help you can provide.

hde2 is the extended partition that is required to have a logical drive
which is FAT32. It doesn't count. I have no win98 partition. I changed the
partition type to linux native (82) then reinstalled linux in the partition.
The FAT32 is storage only. I only want to know how to install NTLDR on a MBR
and configure it to boot to a particular partition.

I think you really need to check the version of rpm you
are talking about. rpm-3.0.5-9.6x is the version that RH
put out for users to use to upgrade to rpm-4.x. This works
cause I've used it on anotha machine I have.

Take a look at my webpage http://neilevid.tripod.com/download there is a
simple method described for resolving this issue. Also a new driver has been
posted on ftp.promise.com which compiles correctly without this error.

Here is the problem:
I had win2k on a 10Gig partition, and winme on a 5Gig partition, all on
one harddrive. Linux was alone on a different drive, LILO installed.

I decided to wipe out win2k altogether, so I fdisk'd and deleted its
partition. Now fdisk sees only one drive of 5Gigs taken at 100%; in
other words, the 10 Gig partition is not seen by fdisk.
BTW, I wiped out Linux also on its own drive.

How can I recover the 10Gig partition without, of course lose my 5Gig
where all my backup files recide?

Help please!!!!!!!

I don't know about the ssh question, but when su'ing to root an entry is
written in the syslog - this isn't the case when logging in as root.

No need to go back in time. Mandrake has a current 486 optimized

Another way to go would be to try FreeBSD, which to me seems

cdrwin from goldenhawk works well. You can get a demo (only writes at 1x) from
http://www.goldenhawk.com

It will directly burn iso images, but you have to use the correct options. Look
for something like "burn an existing image" or something like that. Its been a
while since I used it, and my memory is failing in my old age...

yeah, I can't print from every application I can think of, staroffice,
netscape, the test...etc

I have Samba 2.0.7 and the share has the following parameters:

[global]
   printing = bsd
   printcap name = /etc/printcap
   load printers = yes
   log file = /var/log/samba-log.%m
   lock directory = /var/lock/samba

#there is of course other stuff under [global], but it does not
#pertain to the current situation

[printers]
     comment = All Printers
     path = /var/spool/lpd/lp
     browseable = no
     public = yes
     writable = no
     printable = yes

[lp]
    comment = Linux printer
    path = /var/spool/lpd/lp
    printer name = canon
    public = yes
    writeable = yes
    printable = yes
    guest ok = yes
    user = sinbeast
    print command = lpr -P lp

I just don't understand where the locup is. Again, I get an "unknown

printer, I have done it before). I figure there must be something
wrong with the way I have it set up. Perhaps I need to have the share

ssh will encrypt all data duringthe session, not just the password.
So ssh'ing in as a person and then su'ing to root does not expose the
root password. (Neither does ssh'ing in as root.)

Usually it is preferable to login in as a user then su to root because
then the log files (/var/log/messages, and /var/log/secure) record who
switched to root when, so that you can track down actions to a
person. The point is to answer questions such as "Which administrator
installed the new package ? Which administrator added that new user
?"
