Run ypbind/ypserv in debug mode... You'll get better answers step by
step... Whats the output of:
root@machine# ypserv --debug
root@machine# ypbind --debug
root@machine# nisdomainname
Does your nis domainname show itself?

hi!
under dos you can use partitionmagic:
copy the win-partition to the new drive,
and then enlarge it. (i think it's only possible up to 8 gb.)
you need to create a 2nd partition, which covers the remainig space.

hi!
as soon as the bios gives controll to linux, it crashes?
go to bios (press delete while booting)
and press the "failsave autoconfig" button. this should fix it.
usualy the memory is talked to too fast. so errors occur,
and the system crashes (after doing funny stuff).
try a dos bootdisk, and start nc,
usualy on such machines nc and dos runs, but extremely unstable.
nc has crazy colors, the dos-commands does not function correctly,
...
while bios has controll your computer runs in a slower "startup"
failsave speed, so there naything works fine.

no. hdparm would not help much.
you need "acm" support compiled into your kernel.
then it will power-down on an init 0.
(i tried it with an laptop & suse-linux 7, worked fine.)

hi!
ofcourse you need to export the path, where the cdrom is mounted.
(you can not export /dev/hdc, ak the device itself)
and ofcourse the hosts.allow needs to be tweaked,
(BUT THIS IS OK, as you can mount other directorys from the host)
the problem is:
you mount cdrom, then export the mountpoint via nfs,
then import mountpoint via nfs from another computer,
->mountpoint is empty.
(-t isoxxxx) does not solves this either...
what's up with that?
is there an "removable" option in exports ??
(no, is not, but ...)
using samba exporting cdroms is no problem by the way..
another prob: i can export any directory (except cdrom)
but not / . (i can not mount it later.)
what is so special about / ?
it needs to work. i have seen an example exports file,
but i can not mount / to an mountpoint on another computer..
(allow and export correctly set).
please help.

hi!
i have set up an raidarray, and want to execute for a specific user
the following sbin programs:
on logon (shell/x11(gnome))
#start raidarray only for one specific user
mdadd /dev/md0 /dev/hdb1 /dev/hdc1
mdrun /dev/md0
#mount it.
mount /dev/mdo /home/alfred/raid
and on logout (shell/x11(gnome))
umount /home/alfred/raid
mdstop /dev/md0
i have figured out this for mount. (fstab)
but then other users can mount it too!
this is not good.
and i dont know how to do it for the mdxxx programms.
the are in sbin, so only an admin can execute them.
(~.profile ~.bash_logout ~.bash_rc)
where to put these programs, so that an non-root
user has the raidarray mounted whenever he logs in,
and unmounted + stopped whenever he leaves the comuter...
i have suse linux 7.
thank you or your time.

Hello,
Every time I try to compile a source (such as qmail for instance), the
compiler doesn't seems to find some files and stops (I use the RH 6.2).
for qmail here is the error message I get :
./compile sig_alarme.c
In file included from /usr/include/signal.h:300,
from sig_alarm.c:1:
/usr/include/bits/sigcontext.h:28: asm/sigcontext.h: No such file or

but when I:
#locate sigcontext
/usr/include/bits/sigcontext.h
/usr/lib/perl5/5.00503/i386-linux/asm/sigcontext.ph
/usr/lib/perl5/5.00503/i386-linux/bits/sigcontext.ph
what can I do ?
Thanks.

It's a false alarm from the useless virus detection misfeature of your

Okay. I'm gonna ask really nicely here. I installed and configured RedHat 7
onto my ATA-100 controller (HPT370 on an ABIT KT7-RAID) and then decided
windows would be nice too. I had problems making a bootdisk, because my
drive is a LS-120, and fdformat doesn't like it, and I'm quite the relative
newbie.
So I decided to set my BIOS virus warning to 'on' (supposedly because this
always *used to* allow me to stop programs altering the MBR) but it didn't
warn me of anything. So I've lost lilo, and linux. I am gonna put the hd on
IDE1 again and sort the problem out, but if anyone knows how to make a
bootdisk, could they please point me in the right direction? I followed the
Bootdisk-HOWTO and it simply wrote L1 to the screen once a second, whic was
strange.
Thanks

Running Mandrake 7.1, with KDE2 installed from RPMs from Mandrake 7.2beta and
Helix GNOME.
Okay, so this is completely my own stupid fault. I had lpd running perfectly
well, with no problems whatsoever. But in a pique of curiousity, and without
thinking things through properly, I decided to try out CUPS. So I installed
it, couldn't get it set up properly, and so decided to go back to lpd. So I
removed cups and reinstalled lpd, and used printtool to set up my printer
again.
But now only root can print!
I don't know why---I've read through the printing howto, and checked the file
permissions and everything looks fine:
# ls -l /etc/printcap
-rw-r--r-- 1 root lp 424 Oct 29 02:51 /etc/printcap
# ls -ld /var/spool/lpd
drwxrwxr-x 3 root lp 4096 Oct 29 06:57 /var/spool/lpd/
# ls -ld /var/spool/lpd/lp/
drwxr-xr-x 2 root lp 4096 Oct 29 07:01 /var/spool/lpd/lp/
# ls -l /var/spool/lpd/lp/
total 32
-rwx------ 1 lp lp 9479 Oct 29 02:51 filter*
-rw------- 1 lp lp 187 Oct 29 02:51 general.cfg
-rw-r----- 1 root root 33 Oct 29 07:01 lock
-rw------- 1 lp lp 335 Oct 29 02:51 postscript.cfg
-rw-rw-r-- 1 root root 25 Oct 29 07:01 status
-rw------- 1 lp lp 148 Oct 29 02:51 textonly.cfg
However, if I issue a simple "lpr <some-text-file>" or "lpr <some-ps-file> as
an ordinary user (who IS a member of the lp group) then nothing happens. No
warning message, nothing in the queue, just nothing). Doing the same as root
does work, as does printing the test pages from within printtool.
Now given that everything was working fine, and not much has changed, then I
clearly have some small thing set up incorrectly. I would realy appreciate
some help with this. Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
Darren

You haven't done a correct RTFM...
In this case, move to the alsa dir that contains the INSTALL text file. Read it
and maybe even dump to printer. The last few pages explains via examples some
changes you will have to make to /etc/modules.conf. They include module
inclusion and a few alias's... They MUST be there, before alsa will load on the
next reboot.
Also, if you fail to read it in the INSTALL... The default volume level
is: MUTE.
You must turn up the volume, before you'll hear anything... ;')
Running alsa here with an AOPEN AW230 on Caldera eDesktop 2.40. No problems and
very happy.

I am in the process of doing just what you are asking for...
Working with an old LEO DESIGNOTE 5500...
Install the floppy drive, boot a floppy with fdisk, format, sys and whatever is
needed to interface the cdrom when it's installed. Fdisk the hardrive so
there's room for a THINKPAD sleep area, a large C: and a small D:. Make the
D: part about 128meg or so. Reboot, format C: with the /sys switch. Turn off
laptop, swap floppy for cdrom. Turn it on. Debug cdrom setup.
Once the cdrom is accessable, slip in your linux distro. In installing COL 2.40
the dir at /col/launch/dos has all the tools you will need to get Linux on
the laptop via loadlin.
Works, 100% of the time, just a bit slow. I've done so many of these installs
to the LEO, that I've automated most of the process with a dos batch script
that I fire off from the floppy. Then when booted via harddrive (cdrom
installed), I then fire off another script to mount the loadlin process...
What I'd really like to tackle, someday, is a totally hands off install...
That would be the cats' meow!

The trouble with this card is that over the years Linksys has used
several different chipsets in the card, but they never change
numbers, etc. so you never know which "version" of the card you are
using. This is why some people have tons of problems while others
don't.
For instance, I use these cards exclusively, but don't have a lick
of trouble with the regular Tulip driver. YMMV.
