I know the problem of lilo stopping with 'L' instead of starting the
system.

Try to reinstall lilo (do you start from the boot sector you have
installed lilo in?). Then it should work.

After one has a kernel configured for modules, is it possible to add in a
module without recompiling the kernel? Ex.) I have a 2.2.16-2 kernel for RH
7.0 (I changed the Makefile to kgcc) with modules enabled. Now if I want to
have the kernel load a sound module at boot time what do I do from scratch??
Just use gcc to compile the sound.c file, move that file (sound.o) to
/lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc, then add a line to my /etc/modules.conf file???

Is it possible to centralise the administration of user information on
multiple Linux boxes the way NT does ?

Also, is it possible to sync the two systems together so that a user
can be authenticated on both networks with the same logon/password.

Thanks.

Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2000 22:19:43 GMT

Hi,
In RedHat 6.2 it appears that enabling IP forwarding from Linuxconf
simply doesn't work. That is, it actually changes FORWARD_IPV4 in
/etc/sysconfig/network, but the system seems to simply ignore that
file... I read the "New Features" section in RH6.2's reference guide
and, sure enough, it says that /etc/sysconfig was replaced by
sysctl.conf.

So my questions is: Do I understand correctly that things that I used
to configure via Linuxconf (such as IP forwarding) I can no longer
configure via Linuxconf? Do I have to edit sysctl.conf by hand? (not a
big problem for me, but I need to make sure that my hand-written
configuration changes do not compete with some real-settings configured
via a different GUI tool)

TIA,
Swengtoo

After I have configured and compiled my kernel, and enabled modules,
what do I need to do to add a module to the kernel, and have it loaded
at boot time. For example let's say I wanted to add a soundblaster
module. Is it necessary to recompile the kernel, or may I just compile
the necessary soundblaster file (awe-wave) then place that awe-wave.o
file in /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc then add a line in /etc/modules.conf
to get it to load at boot time??

I don't use RH 7 but that would work in 6.2

I have captured some audio using the command

and can very successfully play it back but my
dilema is now that I want to clip the sound
apart and use it, I have no idea what format
the sound is in? I assumed some sort of raw
byte stream so I tried to convert with sox
and tried both unsigned and signed byte
streams to .au and just got horrible garbage.
I also tried sox on auto and it was maybe even
worse garbage. Any clues?

I always rpm -e linuxconf and do it by hand.
Just add a line like this to /etc/sysctl.conf and then restart the
network.

net.ipv4.ip_forward = 1

Then: /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart

Hi,

I want to connect my linux box to 32 disks via Fibre Channel.
My understanding - limited as it might be - is that it is only possible
to have 16 devices (/dev/sda, sdb, sdc,..., sdp).

Can this be increased or is this the limitation of the current kernel?
If yes, how?
If no, when will it be available?

OK, so I read the upload section on the man page. I inserted this into
the ftpaccess file. I want to allow ftp uploads to the pub directory.
It still says permission denied on server. So I have to reboot (or shut
down the ftp service and restart it - and how exactly do you do that?).

Also, how do you configure a remote printer from the command line. The
redhat help files are less than easy. I set this computer up as a
server, so i don't have any GUI access. I copied the printcap file and
some others from a machine I configured with printtol, but this didn't
work.

Subject: Re: ATI Xpert2000 video card and RH 6.0
Date: Tue, 31 Oct 2000 21:54:21 -0500

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your response. I read some of the documentation on the
XFree86-3.3.6 and it doesn't show that it supports the ATI Xxpert2000, but I
am willing to try it if this doesn't work. The Linux-ix86-glibc21 will
update XFree86 to 4.0.1, plus, when I run "sh xinstall.sh -check", it
detected my video card and specified what libraries that I need. So I would
prefer to use this method if possible.

I believe that I found the problem with installing the Linux-ix86-glibc21,
but don't know what to do about it. I'll go into some details and maybe you
can tell me where I am going wrong. First, I downloaded the
Linux-ix86-glibc21 files in Win98 to a FAT16 partition. Then I booted into
Linux, and created a /dos directory. I then mounted the FAT16 partition by
using the command "mount -t msdos /dev/hdb5 /dos". I created a /root/temp
directory and copied the files to it. I verified that all of the files were
copied. I then go to the /root/temp directory and run the xinstall.sh script
by using the command "sh xinstall.sh". The script starts to run and I answer
a prompt to continue with the installation. I then get a message saying that
the extract utility needs (and lists all of the .tgz files) in the current
directory to run. At this point, the script has terminated. I have verified
that all of the files listed are indeed there.

The install documentation warns that some browsers will not download the
xinstall.sh and extract files properly because it will download them in text
mode, so they also provide a xinstall.bin and extract.exe that can be
renamed after downloading. I don't believe that this is a problem because
the script is running, and the extract utility is trying to run. I also
believe that the .tgz files are downloading properly because I can view the
contents of them with Winzip in Windows. I believe the problem is that the
.tgz files are not copying properly from the FAT16 partition. I tried to
view one of the files with pkunzip while in Linux, and it said that it
wasn't a valid archive.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated
