This is a normal message for any FAT file system. It is not complaining
about the copy it is complaining about setting the mode on the file after
is copied/moved. Since FAT does not have the information of UNIX/LINUX
file systems it can not change the files to those values. I belive you can
supress this message when you mount the file system. Check out the
FAT/VFAT part of the mount command.
You can also redirect stderr from the command to /dev/null e.g.:
cp xyz abc 2>/dev/null
Hope this helps,

Hi!
I'm using Mandrake 7.2 on a Dual Celeron machine. I have both the new
KDE2.0 and helixcode gnome installed. I use gdm that comes with gnome as my
login manager. Sice I installed KDE2.0, Each time I restart the Xserver,
the option of running Gnome upon login under GDM is not available anymore.
Meaning, the file /etc/X11/gdm/Sessons/Gnome is not executable anymore. I
can make it executable again and Gnome shows up again. But I would lke to
fix this properly. So either I find out why this happens or if somebody
knows where to place the "chmod +x /etc/X11/gdm/Sessons/Gnome" command so
each time before gdm is executed it will fix this problem up front !?
Thanks Juergen

So??? Where is you mouse connected to?
Where is your modem connected to?
What's pid 1152, and why does it want a mouse?
What's /dev/mouse pointing to?
Is the program under pid 1152 configured correctly?
Is your ppp daemon (or chat or whatever) configured correctly?
If you aren't sure where your modem and mouse are (or should be), remember
MSDOS COM1: is /dev/ttyS0
MSDOS COM2: is /dev/ttyS1
MSDOS COM3: is /dev/ttyS2

Worked like a charm :) The only question I have is about postfix.
there is no module for it in linuxconf, so how do I configure it?
Right now the mail delivery is a little slow, i want to verify that
postfix is delivering the mail as soon as it comes in.
Thanks again Rod, you're a god send!

Disconnect the speaker. The quality of the motherboard drivers for the PC
speaker is almost always a p.o.s.

OK I finally got my server up and running flawlessly. As a side note,
MDK 7.2 is the freakin BOMB! I love it! All of my issues(except for
the soundcard) from MDK 7.1 were corrected in MDK 7.2. BUT i want to
start playing with kernel compiling, firewalling, and Ip Masquerading.
Before I go fouling my system all up and not being able to get it back
to the wondeful shape it's in now, can you ghost a linux disk? I am
using two 8 GB drives(hda- /,/var,/usr, and swap; hdb- /home all on
seperate partitions). Before I took out hda and installed it in a
windows machine. I ran symmantec pghost but the only way it would
copy the linux directories is as a copy of the entire disk(i.e. an 8
GB backup file instead of a 1GB backup of the actual data). I am not
as concerned with hdb, but is there a way to back up just the data of
hda and have it replicate it back onto the drive(or other drive) at a
seperate time?
Any advice would be appreciated,

I have a linux machine that I'd like to make into a dual boot
linux+win98 box. It has a free 2 Gbyte partition where I'd like
to install win98. I'm concerned that I might inadvertently trash
my ext2 partitions in the process though. (Yes - I've done my
backups! :)
I'd like to do the installation without having to reinstall linux
afterwards. Will my win98se cd allow me to pick a partition to
install on? Is there a document somewhere that tells how to do
this? I've found lots of info on installing linux on a
pre-existing windows machine, but not the other way around.

Subject: Can't install RH6.1 on Intel ISP2150 server with SCSI drives
Date: Fri, 03 Nov 2000 17:11:49 GMT
Help.
Now.
We are trying to install RH6.1 on an Intel ISP2150 dual-CPU rack
server. This server comes with the Adaptec 7896 SCSI controller
onboard. The drive is a Seagate (ST318436LC) 7200rpm 30Gb SCSI drive.
We have downloaded the latest 7xxx drivers (from RedHat) for this
controller (i.e. created a driver update disk) and during install we
specify "text dd".
During the install when prompted we use the driver update disk and then
when adding devices we add the AIC 7xxx controller from the list of
SCSI devices. When prompted to continue, we get as far as selecting the
partitioning program when it then bombs out telling us that it can't
find any hard-drives to install filesystems onto. I must add that the
BIOS has no problems seeing the drive and in fact, I specify the SCSI
drive as the primary hard-drive in the BIOS.
We have seen many posting in USENET groups about this controller and
general problems installing onto SCSI drives, but noone seems to get a
response from anyone about this problem! What exactly is the problem
and how do we proceed with the install?
Any help would be much appreciated. We have a lovely dual-750MHz P-III
box just sitting here begging to be used - surely this is a crime?! :-)

The only safe way to add a MS operating system to a computer that has
foreign partitions is to encapsulate the MS OS into a VMware virtual
machine. Either that or have the MS and foreign partitions on separate drives
and write protect (drive jumper -> front panel switch) the drive with the
foreign partitions.
I wouldn't put it past MS to poke random garbage into foreign partitions. When
I used OS/2 back in the late 90's, system stability improved enormously when I
quit dual booting to W95 did my W95 work on a separate machine.

okay, the quickest way to fix this is to muck around with the
/etc/X11/XF86Config file. Note that the XF86Config file placement may differ
from distro to distro - that where it lives in RedHat. Try a 'locate
XF86Config' if you don't see it there.
Anyway, open up that file in your favorite text editor and scroll down to the
"Screen" section (usually near the bottom of the file). You should see
several 'SubSection "Display"' lines.
To set your default bpp, you can just add the line
DefaultColorDepth 32
to the "Screen" section (not in the subsections). Make sure that you have a
SubSection "Display" that has the line "Depth 32" or it won't work.
To get rid of that annoying Virtual Screen, just delete the "Virtual" lines
from all the "Diplay" subsections.
Save the file and [re]start X

I am facing similar problems. I have an Intel ISP2150 dual-CPU rack
server with SCSI drives. The onboard SCSI controller is an Adaptec
7896. I have downloaded the latest aic7xxx driver and created a driver
update disk.
Upon installation I choose "text dd" (I tried "expert dd" too). It then
prompts me for the disk and it appears to proceed normally. When asked
to add a device I see aic7xxx in the list and select it as normal.
I get as far as choosing a partitioning utility where it then tells me
that it can't find any hard drives to install file-systems onto. This
is in spite of having the latest driver (this is RH6.1 BTW) from
RedHat. The BIOS has no problems seeing the drive and in fact this
drive is selected as the primary boot drive in the BIOS.
I have seen other messages on USENET (one guy had the same controller
and the same error) but noone seems to have a definitive answer. I have
already posted this problem to the RedHat forums and not got an answer
yet.
As you can imagine, it is kind of frustrating to have all this
beautiful hardware just sitting there! :-)

Well it's only X that won't cooperate, so you're "almost there".
Don't know what the problem is exactly, but try deleting the file called
.ICEauthority in your homedir before starting X.
I've come across various gnome authentication problem now and then as
well, and that solves it each time.
The latest versions of Gnome will attempt to start X three times - and
if it still fails it will leave you at the console prompt.
Investigating the output of .xsession-errors might give a clue to what
is wrong.
If you want to see all that goes on during a startup of X, start it from
console with
startx > startx.txt 2>&1
The output of 2>&1 to "startx.txt" is stdout and stderr. Stdout is
standard output - the text that normally flies by on screen. Stderr is
various potential error output.
Scrutinizing the resulting file may give clues to problems with
configuration.

Which partition is free (ie /dev/hda[1234] )? IIRC, Windows will only install
on the first partition (/dev/hda1), but I could be wrong. Assuming that you
have that partition free or can free it up (boot off a rescue {CD,floppy} and
shift your Linux parts), the big concern is that Windows will stomp all over
the boot sector of your drive. Make sure that you have a boot {CD,floppy}
with lilo on it so that you can take control of your boot sector once more.
Then you'll need to add a label / section to the /etc/lilo.conf to allow dual
booting through lilo.
Depending on your needs, the best solution may be to use VMWare
(www.vmware.com). It's a little pricey, but if you have the resources (RAM,
CPU) it RULES! You won't be able to do any DirectX, though (no good games).
It's great for windows apps that don't need any special hardware. If your
needs fit the bill, it will let you run a full blown Windows session while
you're still running linux - no rebooting! Great way to boost your up time if
you need a windows app! ;-)

I'm using RedHat 6.0, Linux 2.2
I'm trying to use a CompactFlash PCMCIA Card. When I insert the card,
I get the following messages:
hde: Hitachi ATA 6.0, ATA DISK drive
ide2 at 0x110-0x117, 0x11e on irq5
hde: unknown partition table
hde: unknown partition table
hde: drive_cmd: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error }
hde: drive_cmd: error=0x04 { DriveStatusError }
At this point I can monunt it and use it. By the way, I get very
similar messages when I insert a Sony MemoryStick with a PCMCIA
adapter.
When I remove the card without unmounting it first, I get the following
message:
ide2: unexpected interrupt, status=0xff, count=5
I have two questions:
1. How can I prevent all these messages from displaying (or better
yet, how do I take care of the problems causing these error
messages)?
2. How can I automatically mount and unmount the card upon
insertion/ejection?
Thank you!
