hi all,

ross dual hypersparc sparcplug, four hard drives, cd-rom, tape. i'm
trying to install rh6.2. i've tried this install probably going on 20
times now. every combination of drive setting/termination/etc i've tried
( swear to god, i've been at this for weeks ). i get as far in the
install as "formatting / filesystem..." at which point, i can hear the
drive seeking ( sounds like its formatting ) but even if i let this run
overnight, in the morning, its still "formatting / filesystem". i've
tried to put / on many different drives, different sizes, etc.

at this point i'm totally, totally stumped. completely open to ideas.

thanks!!!

Hmmmm?? Not if you are using a tarball to upgrade the kernel.

No it won't matter I use the 2.2.17 kernel on a redhat 6.2 system
compiled from a tarball.

Hmmm?? What message file??

Hmmm?? I don't even have a initrd image for my kernel on an SCSI system.

When you compile a new kernel you get a new System.map file which needs
to be copied to /boot/ along with the bzImage file.

 cp /usr/src/linux/System.map /boot/System.map-x.x.xx
 cp /usr/src/linux/arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/vmlinuz-x.x.xx

Where x.x.xx is the new kernel version

Did you edit /etc/lilo.conf and change the kernel to the new kernel

Greetings!

I had to crash out of Linux tonight -- power switch! --; I was fooling
with nfs and got stuck.

It did it's 'forced checking' routine and gave a [PASSED]; then it seems
to hang at REMOUNTING ROOT FILESYSTEM IN READ-WRITE MODE, altho it
indicates [OK] so perhaps the hang is just after this routine.

I just discovered I don't have a serviceable bootdisk (I'm going to see if
I can get that 'tomsrtbt' bootdisk) but even if I could boot into the
system, I'm not sure what I'm looking to correct.

I welcome some help here; thanks!

It's a RedHat 6.0 system (laptop); I was doing nfs via a pcmcia card to my
desktop. The HD is otherwise intact -- I'm using it now in OS/2 and the RH
cdrom sees the HD though I noticed it hanged also on trying to create a
rescue disk.

Subject: Help: win98/linux dual boot with 2 HDs
Date: Fri, 03 Nov 2000 17:20:13 +0000 (GMT)

I'd like to set up my machine to be dual boot with linux on one HD and
Win98 on another. I've had both on the same HD (12Gb) up until now, but
lack of space (and the fact that I've written over the mbr again >:-( )
has prompted me to buy a second hard drive (20Gb).

Ideally, I'd like windows on my new disc, with linux and lilo kept
separatly from it on the old one. What I therefore need to do is install
windows, copy some of my files across from the old disc, and then put
linux on it.

What is the best way of doing this, in terms of installing the new drive,
master/slave settings, installing the os's, configuring lilo, etc?

Any help (or an appropriate url) would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Duncan

I fit is always changing by the same 6 hours then this should correct
it.

To check to see if this could be the problem:

  cat /etc/sysconfig/clock

This will show you the clock file. If this could be causing the problem
it will probably look like the one shown.

  ZONE="US/Central"
  UTC=true
  ARC=false

It should look similar to this with the correct country and timezone in
the first line. The second line tells Linux to assume the BIOS clock is
set to the UTC or GMT timezone. If this is what yours looks like then
you should change the UTC line to correct it as shown below.

  vi /etc/sysconfig/clock

   UTC=false

Be sure to save the change when done then reset the correct time.

Hope this helps.

Yes this is done from /etc/conf.modules so you would add a line like
this:

alias eth0 3c509 # be sure to use the correct module.

Sorry, but this solution doesn't work. I get this message:

cp: copying multiple files, but last argument (2) is not a directory
Try `cp --help' for more information.

That's because the 'cp' command interprets '2' as a directory, and the
previous parameters as files to be copied into it.
And I don't find the 'cp' and 'mv' errors normal anyway (see errors in my
original message). Previously on another dual boot system I did not get errors
when copying files to VFAT.

Moreover, I hope you read my 'P.S.' in the original message. I am writing a
program that does some copying (maybe also moving in the future). Since the
program can be run on any machine, not only on mine, it would be erroneous to
neglect the returned error. So hiding the error is not a solution.

Any ideas?

Andrei

IIRC, debian packages are simple ar archives which you can unpack with
ar. They contain a couple of .tar.gz files which contain the binaries
and control information association with the packaging system
respectively.
