Hello

I've got the following problem:
When I did install Suse 7 on my notebook and try to login the mouse doesn't
work. But! About 2 times of 10 reboot it works and I can use the touchpad.
Anyone got the same problem or have an answer what to do now?
Thank you!

1) Turn off the auto power off in your BIOS
or
2) Set your Linux time to GMT
or
3) Update your kernel to latest version
or
4) Modify time.c to update Linux time from the Real Time Clock shorter than
the default of 11 minutes.

I did 1) for Redhat 6.x and did 3) for Redhat 7.0

Partition Magic 5 does not have this problem.
I need a 216MB for a swap partition for Oracle8. Oracle recommends
three times the RAM size. (3 x 72 =216M)
Why don't you use PM4 to make a regular linux partition to 133.3 MB then
use linux fdisk to change the partition id
from linux to linux swap partition or else use mkswap?

do tell what type of mouse you have and paste your X configuration
check the laptop documentation.

most touchpads are PS/2 you must disable gpm. Usually that solves
half of the problems... so try that.

uh, so it works and it doesn?try killing X if it doesn't run and
restart..

two things you can do to diagnose this

1. as root, type lsmod
2. as root, type dmesg right after you run the not working things.

do tell what sound card and chipset you are using and check if it's
supported.

send the results

hm. i am not familiar with RH but only the boot sector of the CD will

Subject: Newbie: Setting up W2K Loader and Linux
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sat, 04 Nov 2000 20:08:13 GMT

I've been trying to install Linux (Red Hat 7), following the
instructions in the Linux+NT Loader HOWTO to set it up to dual boot
with my Windows 2000 installation.

However: er, it isn't working! I've copied the boot sector using dd
from /dev/hda2 and stuck it on my C: drive, adding the necessary
reference to boot.ini. Selecting 'Linux' from the list, however, just
produces a blank screen. Booting Linux from a floppy disk works fine,
though.

I imagine that I'm doing something simple wrong - but this is the
first time I've ever tried installing Linux and I've no idea what that
might be. I read something about problems with large disks and Linux
not booting properly (W2K has a 23GB NTFS partition, Linux has the
last 5GB of the disk) but my installation does boot fine...just only
from a floppy.

Any help would be appreciated,

Oliver.

You need the ide-floppy module. Check if you have it in
/lib/modules/`uname -r`/block/ide-floppy.o. If it is there,
simply modprobe ide-floppy.

If not, and if it is not compiled into the kernel, then you will
have to recompile the kernel.

-lx means libx.a or libx.so. You do have symbolic links like ..
libXpm.so   -> libXpm.so.4
libXpm.so.4 -> libXpm.so.4.11
.. these though ? If not *and* there aren't non-shared libs (.a), then
yes, it's not going to work. It used to but ages ago the binutils ld
behaviour got changed.

Hope it helps,

I'd also like to get a two-HD host, ghost the good system from HDa to
HDb once, and use rsync every night to keep both HDs in sync (new SWs,
changes in configuration files.) That way, should HDa die, I can just
shut down the host, swap the two hard disks, and reboot with the
backup HDb.

FWIW, I'd like to a get a rackable Dell PowerEdge server with two
extractable HDs (for convenience, as you can just pull them out w/out
messing with the case itself), and just swap HDs should the main one
come crashing down (poor man's RAID 1 :-) .
In a small team, for services like eg. e-mail or ftp, I don't think
RAID 1/5 is justified (considering Linux's overall stability, a 5-mn
downtime once a year to swap HDs and reboot is good enough.)

Is booting with a stand-alone floppy like tomsrtbt and using dd a good
solution? The ideal would be the equivalent of DiskImage, which can
perform a fully-automated image of a HD onto a second ("Disk-to-Disk
Copy"), including creating all the partition.
I tried this with DI 3.01, but it failed (fact is, they do say in the
README that ext2fs is not officially supported -> YMMV.) I guess dd
requires you to create partitions manually, and then perform a raw
copy onto the backup drive?

Speaking of which, why is ext2fs such a problem for tools like Ghost
or DriveImage? Why can't they perform the smart copying they do with
FAT[32] instead of copying even unused space?

Thx
FF.

Hello,

I am a newbie, just installed RH 7. Trying to learn how to configure
system.

I have added a call to a script inside the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file. This
script sets up ip forwarding and masquerading for the firewall. After I
reboot my computers on the local network can't get out through the firewall.
I believe the problem is that rc.local is not be executed. I came to this
conclusion because I can execute the rc.local file by typing ./rc.local and
then my computers on the local network can get through the firewall.

Why isn't rc.local being executed during boot?

Thanks in advance; many more questions to come.

A couple of things to check...make sure it is scheduled to start:

[hal@feenix hal]$ ls -l /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/*local
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root   11 May 17 18:16 /etc/rc.d/rc5.d/S99local ->../rc.local

rc5.d is runlevel 5 (X) stuff. 'S' means to be started (K would indicate
to be killed). 99 makes it last thing run at this runlevel. Of course,
make sure the link is there. Use 'ntsysv' as root to change if not set
to run. Also, make sure the permission are correct on
/etc/rc.d/rc.local. Should be 'rwx'. Note the 'x' there. Also, use full
path names for any scripts or executables that are run from here in case
they are not in the default path.

Any idea why the installation crashes immediately after the hd-partitioning
phase? If I select automatic partitioning or fdisk, it just shuts down and
reboots. The same happens with disk druid after selecting the root and
swap -partitions and clicking on next. (Installing from local CD-ROM)
I have tried moving the empty space around the disk with PM5 (inside/outside
the extended partition). and creating ext2/swap -partitions before and in
the installation program.

I have

16Gb Primary IDE
    -FAT32 3,5GB /with Win2k and WinME
-FAT32 9,7GB (games and other data)
    -Empty space for linux (1.7Gb)
    -QNX 4 (the rest)

the slave drive only has NTFS-data-partitions
