Subject: lpd problem in RH 6.1

I installed RH 6.1 some time ago, but finally got it together to buy a
printer. Before setting up my Optra E 312 I checked dejanews for the
problems that I might face. With that I began the installation being
sure to include 'alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc' in my
/etc/conf.modules. Using Printtool, I configured the printer (lp0 was
auto-detected) and I was able to print no problem. Then I came back a
few days later and tried to print all I got was the error '...no daemon
present'.
I checked the lsmod and the proper modules seem to be loaded. I also
checked 'ps aux' but I don't see lpd. I went to /etc/rc.d/init.d/ and
ran 'lpd start' and when I checked ps aux again, still no lpd. I then
tried to reboot and checked dmesg, but there is no mention of lpd. It
appears that lpd is not getting loaded a boot, but I also can't manually
load it after. My /etc/printcap fill looks right (as compared to other
posts) and I have seached the NGs and everything I have found I've
tried, but I still can't seem to load lpd.
Not sure what to try next. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks

Not a joke.
Wouldn't work.
If you look at the supported hardware list that I posted the url for earlier, it
just so happens that the cards you list here are on that list.
Alan says he got an smc ultra working on an alphastation 200. Alan, could you
give me any pointers on how to configure the ISA slot? With either isacfg or
whatever other tools are needed?
I think the reason mine didn't work was somehow related to that.

If you reinstall linux with the 2940 installed, it will work. But you'll spend
more time for the same result.
I'm not familiar with mntab in other unixes.
Most people don't have a /root/etc folder.
Besides editing /etc/fstab, you might also want to edit /etc/aboot.conf
It probably won't make any difference. It depends on your srm boot-command.
If you say something like
>>> boot dka1 -fi vmlinuz -fl "root=/dev/sdb2"
then your aboot.conf file won't be used.
If you say something like
>>>boot -fl 0
then your aboot.conf file is critical.
So, if you edit your fstab file, change your boot command, and edit your
aboot.conf file, that's all you need to do. (Unless you have some strange
hardware-dependent application.) Much easier than a re-install.

Hello,
Once I use chkconfig to turn services off I have noticed that some of the
ports published by these services are immediately terminated where in other
cases the ports are still published until I reboot. I know that I should
not have to reboot.
What is the command for shutting down and restarting all services after
turning some off with chkconfig?
Thanks Randy

Hello,
I have noticed that daily email is sent to the root user, but I only see
this email if I log in from the console on the server. If I log in to root
using SSH I do not see these messages.
I am assuming this is because the console is tty1 and the SSH termial is
pts/0, pts/1, ...
How do I change this either the mail goes to the root user no matter what
terminal or make it go to a different terminal like pts/0?
Thanks

uhhh????
2.2.17 IS the latest *STABLE* version of the kernel... 2.2.18 is the 2.2.xx
that's yet to be released as stable

I don't know for sure this is right answer, but it appears as though running
inetd after making changes with chkconfig makes the changes take effect.
If this is isn't correct please let me know.

The microsoft protocol only supports two buttons. You have two choices:
You could let XFree86 emulate the middle button when pressing left and
right button at the same time or better:
Use another protocol, by changing XF86Config and reconfigure your mouse,
probably by changing a switch on the mouse from "MS" to "PC" and use
"MouseSystems" protocol instead in XF86Config.

The thing is Linux is very sensible. After a while if nothing is
going on, it shuts down non-essential services to conserve power.
It's that Green thing you see. And as you know very few ppl get
out of bed all rearing and ready to go. They are groggy at first
and after the second cup of coffee, can aktually do minor stuff.
Your computer is like this as well.

Chkconfig is responsible for setting up the links in /etc/rcX.d.
I am not sure whether it aktually stops services in use. It seems
you use an RH based distribution. If this is so, take a look at
/etc/rc.d/rc. There is a section in it that runs the KILL scripts
before running the START scripts. You might have to cut these
sections and paste into a script file and then run the file.

Subject: modules not loading
Date: Mon, 06 Nov 2000 19:34:37 GMT
Hi Linux gurus,
I compiled & installed kernel 2.2.16 on my existing RH6.1 (kernel
2.2.12-20). During the process of compiling & installing 2.2.16 kernel,
I did 'make modules' and 'make modules_install.'
However, after rebooting the latest kernel is being used but not the
latest modules. The new modules are installed in /etc/modules/2.2.16
directory, but 'modprobe --show-conf' displays all the 2.2.12-20
version (the old kernel) modules.
Please help me with these topics.
1. How to make the new kernel point to & load the new modules?
2. There is a kernel-2.2.12-20 rpm that is installed (still existing
after installing the new kernel). I want to remove this. Is removing
this suggested? (as far as my little knowledge goes - ok to remove)
3. While compiling the new kernel, I did 'make bzdisk' and have a copy
of vmlinuz on a floppy disk that I am using to boot my machine. How can
I make a 'Startup disk' (not boot-disk) so that the new kernel
(/vmlinuz) on the hard disk is used?
I sincerely appreciate your expert comments/suggestion.

To the best of my knowledge there isn't one. The closest is
init. To kill and start all the services in a runlevel you
would do:
init 1; init 3
or
init 1; init 5
as tthe case may be. Check your /etc/inittab for the runlevels
used on your system

When you were compiling the kernel did you do a "make mrproper" before
"make config"?
OR:
If you compiled any of the modules into the kernel instead of using them
as modules and didn't remove the line in /etc/conf.modules for the
module then this can cause error messages also.

HOWTOs can be found at the Linux Documentation Project. I
don't have a url handy but you can get there via linux.org.
And don't forget the Apache homepage.

man grep for more details. Generally it is
grep <what to search> <where to search>. With the -r option
it would be grep <what to search> -r <base dir to start search from>.
