Use find instead. Grep is better for finding text *inside* of files.

find / -name filename -print

Subject: HELP!! Partition Magic Error 105. PartitionInfo inside: Please look!!

I'm trying to recover my partition. I had it split up my 6GB HD into 2.5GB Windows98
and
3.5GB Linux (Mandrake 7.1). I just recently could not boot up into Linux. I got this
error
during bootup:
> Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05

So, I was going to just remove the Linux partition and freshly install LM 7.2
But, when I run Partition Magic Pro 6.0 in DOS, I get Error 105:
> Error 105 Partition starts on wrong boundary

So what can I do to resize my Windows98 partition to the full size of the HD without
damaging the Win98 partition?

Here's the PartitionInfo output:

try running fdisk /mbr, then just plain fdisk and see if you can delete the non-dos
partition. If not, try
running Partition Magic again and see if you get that error again after rewriting the
boot sector (fdisk /mbr).

I'm not saying this is the answer, it's just where I'd go next.

hope it helps

I have 8gb hd with win98 installed. I downloaded the rpms and base
directories to the wiin drive for redhat 7.0.
Made the floppy boot disk with rawrite, that went fine.
when i booted from the floppy everything went according to plan.
However i have one problem i cant work around.
When the install process identifies my hd partitions it finds one which is
what i have (planning to use the auto partition in the install process)
It finds the partition dev/hda1 and asks me to identify the directory tree
where redhat is. (rpms and base are located c:/redhat/)
So i enter /redhat. Then a msg comes up and tells me that "device /dev/hda1
does not appear to contain an instilliation tree"
I have tried all sorts of things.
Partitioned my hd with partition magic for 2gb with a 125mb swap for linux
and tried to move the redhat to that partition. Magic mover does not
recognise or find the partition. Nor does boot magic find it.
so deleated the partition.
I am thinking that i downloaded the wrong package; ie the one for those to
dl directly to their linux partition. Is this right?
does anyone have any ideas?
thanks
c01d
P.S i have read all the install and using linux guides at redhat.com

I use redhat but this might be the same for Mandrake.
Use the boot disk that you made during the installation, (you did make a
bootdisk didn't you?) and at the lilo prompt enter:

linux root=/dev/hdaX # where X is the root partition.

Then if this works look to see if the /etc/lilo.conf file has an
"initrd=" line in it. If it doesn't then this may be the problem and you
can make the image and place a line like the one below just below the
"label=" line in the lilo.conf file using the correct kernel version for
"x.x.xx" and then run "/sbin/lilo" to update the MBR

label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-x.x.xx.img

Oooops! That would work for Redhat at least.

I've had this same error on more than one occasion, the fix is simple though
destructive.
you definately have to use fdisk to delete the linux partition, it shows up
as a non dos partition in fdisk. after deleting the second partition, use
Partition magic to resize your primary partition or simply recreate your
linux partition.
(fdisk /mbr might work, but I wouldnt count on it.)

Subject: Setting up a server for a business ???
Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 02:37:57 -0800

A friend of mine wants to setup a server for his restaurant.

What this server will do, is host his web site and allow customers to
place a pick-up order through the site (pay with a credit card), the
order will then be printed.

I would also like to know if there is software already out that can
help us or will I have to write the (perl) scripts myself ?

Which platform ? Linux or MS ?

I have experience with Linux (red-hat), but I will not be maintaining
the site once its up, so maybe w2k should be used (it's easier to
maintain, right?). Of course I would like a linux solution, but I
want to keep my options open.

What about security ?

If anyone has done anything like this, please reply, I've never done
anything like this, but I look forward to trying (and learning).

I guess what's normal is to have someone else host the site, use third
party software to handle the order taking (shopping cart), and have
the orders sent via e-mail to the restaurant and then printed.

Of course doing everything "in- house" would be much cooler, but would
take a lot longer.

Any help, links, words of wisdom, will be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Peter
