Figuring that you're trying to save money, I'd go IDE. I did what
you're trying to do now, and made an inexpensive Linux server for our
accountants that runs off of an AMD k6-2 450MHx, 124M RAM & 3 8-gig
drives that are put together through Linux volume management (so I can
give them 20 gigs for a bean-counter program that they all use) that
mounts different drives onto the same directory.

Backups, and UPS's are your friend. If you have the UPS set to do a
proper shut-down during a power-outage, your Linux box will be really
stable. Plan your partitions and shares.

Let me know if you need any other help.

Got it! Thought I'd post it here in case someone comes along with the
same question. The issue turned out to be the shell, and the fix was
simple, and something I tried earlier in the process, but I must have
had other problems then....

I changed the shell from /bin/false to /etc/ftponly. And that was it,
it started working. I'm not sure why /bin/false didn't work, but some
mysteries always exist.

Thanks.

.twm*, like in the configfiles for the Tabbed WindowManager...
Sounds like your either really using this wm because you've never cared
for anything else besides the default wm for X-windows or you've got TWM
still mentioned in some of your X-windows configfiles used when starting
that.

You better check those options first, before you start constructing some
weird rm-script called at startup from your .bashrc or .profile, or
something like that, with the likes of 'rm .twm*' for a body.

For what you want with this system, I think IDE is sufficient. IBM has
indeed got a few very nice HDDs out there. And if you take the 7200 rpms
version, you'll hardly notice the fact you don't have some top$
SCSI-drives in it. They're really overkill IMHO.

> 2) Hardware (other than HDs). Any serious mistakes, or obviously
> better picks to make?

Apart from the remark that this system as a hole seems like overkill ;)
This setup can probably be installed, configured and put in a corner
without looking at it for the next 3-4 years or so; WRT the hardware that
is.

You seem to have a few things settled yet, especially the matter of
which distribution; choose the one you're familiar with. It works that
much faster in installing it and it's that much easier to maintain, it's
hardly ever worth the trouble to learn a (entirely) new distribution.
Also, tinker with the system a bit, before pulling the plug out of the
original server. Maybe keep it up as a backup server for the first few
weeks or so, while you're getting the system 'bugfree' and finetuned.
And check out all the relevant info on the services you like to install,
especially the Firewall en Samba. Start of with the HOWTOs at
www.linuxdoc.org and from there to the recommended further
reading.
It might also be a good idea to test that Firewall with one of the online
websites that can do so, check c.o.l.firewalls and securrity for a few
goods ones on that.

good luck,
Thomas

Hi,

I installed RH 7.0 without any problems. However, everytime I try to start
httpd, I get the error message saying it can not find the host name.

I defined the IP address as 1.1.1.4 and I'm not connecting to any outside
network. I gave the machine the name suzy. I left it to default to the
network mask and default gateway.

Please help if you can.

That is kind of interesting. I didn't know you could do that ;-)

>Backups

I am considering this. I have a windows based CD burner that may get
the job of backing up things. There is also an old HP dat drive laying
around, that is listed as "broken". It may be that its just never been
setup correctly. If I can get the tape drive to work I'll be happy. If
not I'll be stuck with the cd-burner.

>UPS's are your friend.

Hmm, had not thought about that. What do you suggest for the job? We
don't need a full time uptime. Down time due to power outage is fine.
A ups that will properly shut down the machine would be great, but I
have no idea where to start looking for something lie that.

>Let me know if you need any other help.

Thanks for the help so far. Right now I just need to get a document
together describing what I need, how much money and how its going to
work. I'd like the see the machine actually up and functional by the
end of the year. So I have time.

Subject: How to revert from a bad KDE to working GNOME in RH6.2

Hi all,

I screwed up my user accounts XWindows. I was configured up for a GNOME
workstation and everything was working fine then I told X to change
itself to KDE (I figured I would at least see what it looked like).
Then I restarted XWindows and it crashed.

Then I realized that I never installed KDE. I am running RH6.2 and
don't really feel like installing all the KDE stuff.

So how do I manually change the XWindows settings back to start up into
GNOME.?

Thanks

Are you 100% sure that you have the syntax correct? It should go like
this:

ipmasqadm portfw -a -P {protocol} -L {external_ip} {external_port} -R \
{ip_to_forward_to} {port_to_forward_to}

(command is broken at the back-slash for line wrapping)

1: Look in the ms-dos directory of your Linux CD for instructions on
how to make a boot/install/rescue disk. Everything you need should be
there to create a boot floppy.
2: Change your BIOS settings to boot from the CD if your box supports
that option.
If you get an *installation* prompt, type "linux rescue" to get a shell
prompt where you can then edit /etc/lilo.conf and re-run /sbin/lilo to
activate the changes. You may first have to mount your linux partition
with the command:

        mount root=/dev/####

...where #### is your linux root partition (mine is /dev/hda8). The
hard part is editing /etc/lilo.conf if you're new to linux and don't know
how to use one of the available editors. <grins> emacs and vi have online
help and are not *too* difficult to figure out... (Their tutorial and help
systems seriously lack organization.)

Run XConfigurator or XF86Setup, and enter the Hsync and Vsync values for
your monitor into the boxes in the "Advanced" settings. It sound to me
like you just picked a generic monitor, and you're running 1024x768 at
60Hz or lower. Most modern monitors are capable of better refresh
rates, and X uses the Hsync and Vsync values you give it to determine
which refresh rates the monitor can use safely with which resolutions.

If that all seems too complex for you, run Xconfigurator and tell it
your monitor is capable of displaying 1024x768 at 70Hz--there should be
a choice in one of the menus for that....

Usually X eventually crashes as well.
This occures under RH 6.1, 6.2 and 7.0.
It does NOT occur under Suse 7.0.
