And if you set it manually?

echo $MANPATH
(probably returns nothing)
export MANPATH=$MANPATH:/usr/man:/usr/local/man

echo $MANPATH

now this should return at least /usr/man:/usr/local/man

I want to jail my ftp users into there own home folders, so I took the tasks
on my self, I was somewhat successful in the process, my only problem now is
that my ls command is showing hidden files. Like if I ftp into my own
account, i see my bash_history file there. The ls that came with my
distrobution (RH6.0 with secureweb) doesnt show anything at all. I found the
docs to do it at http://www.devshed.com/Server_Side/Administration/wuftpd/
Read the comments from other users to find where I got the patched ls from
and please help me with this problem.

there a more global place that I can add this?

Thanks!

I have... when I go through rexec server to sparc. Linux? Can't remember
if this has happened before.

Everytime when backspace wouldn't work, I would try the delete key, then
Ctrl-Backspace, then Ctrl-Delete... one of them should work.

Are you using bash?

For sparc, my default term is csh, and I can use backspace through rexec
when I switch to bash. Might work for Linux too.

Hi,

I have a i810 AC97 builtin soundcard which can play only 16bit sound.
The only way to play 8bit sound is via the "play"-Script.

There are many situations, where 8bit sound is send directly to
/dev/dsp (therefore I can't hear anything).

I'm looking for a possibility to redirect sound that is send to /dev/dsp
to the play-script.

If someone knows a solution for that, please mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

The hard disk size has become inadequate.

I do not want to add another separate hard disk. What I would like to do is
image copy my drive over to a larger hard drive. Can that be done in Linux?
And if so what hunk of software can I use to accomplish this task?

cp -a doesn't do what you want?
You will afterwards manually have to adjust /etc/fstab, but there are no
big problems

Couldn't find the reply I made from home, so here it comes again:

You could try to change your Monitor Section to the following:

Section "Monitor"
  Identifier "Hyundai Deluxscan 15G+"
  VendorName "Unknown"
  ModelName "Unknown"
HorizSync 30.0-50.0 <<<<<change to the values of YOUR
monitor!!!!
VertRefresh 50.0-110.0 <<<<<change to the values of YOUR
monitor!!!!
EndSection

This might solve the problems you're having.

I need some help for my linux 6.3 ISDN installation. I want my Linux
server to send me an sms or e-mail if I call the server by another ISDN
phone. With this sms I will receive the IP of the server so that I can
communicate by TCP/IP from my other office. Sending sms works fine with
YAPS, but where have I to put the YAPS call, so that it will be
initiated by my phonecall? How can I check if the server will accept my
call? With YAST I setup my ISDN parameters including the phone number
that shold be able to call. I marked the box saying 'allow this number
only' or so but I thik there is no reaction by my server if I'm calling.

Thank you for your helt

Basically I have two networks

192.168.1.0 (255.255.255.0)
and
192.168.2.0 (255.255.255.0)

Instead of buying a Cisco Router I decided to build a linux router/gateway
to talk between these two networks. Its actually a laptop with two 3COM
PCMCIA network cards running Mandrake 7.0.*

After reading the docs I am able to ping a computer on 2.* network from the
1.* network.

However, I want the computers to be visible in Network Neighborhood ... ie.
the NT domain in 2.* should be visible in the 1.* window.

What will that take ?

Thanks!!!!

If I may beg for some help also...

I'm doing pretty much the same setup, except I've implemented plip. NFS over
plip is a cinch. I can mount directories in both directions, giving me access
to resources that can be shared back and forth...

However... When mounting a cdrom from client to server (cdrom already mounted
on server) I get an error:

nfs_read_super: get root fattr failed
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad super block on servder:.. or too
many mounted file systems.

The only two possibilities that make sense to me are "wrong fs" or "bad option".
Both of wich I've looked into in depth and I haven't been able to resolve.
Would anyone here have an idea for me to follow?

Also... Mounting the cdrom on the client from the server, just the opposite
above, procedes normally and without any errors what so ever. I'm able to read
the cdrom just fine... Both machines are setup identically, except where it's
neccessay to be different... :')

This one really has me stumped...

Thanks, in advance.

You can dd the partition to be backed-up, then compress it and then toss it to
tape or whatever.

As for speed... What kind of cable are you connecting your two computers with?
Over here I've been using NFS over plip on a laplink cable. Flawless backup
operations, if a bit slow. I've got it all setup via a couple of scripts... I
just plug it all in, start the scrips and go to bed. Next morning, my laptop
is backed-up to cdr. My seat-o-da'-pants meter says this is all running like
about 2 or 3megs per minute...

If I were to buy a couple of lan cards, this would be a LOT faster... :')

I'm having trouble with my main machine right now, darn it! Everything's
on hold until I can boot back in.

Anyway, I've got a cross-over cable with NIC in the desktop (3com) and
some kind of no-name (popular here in Germany, I think) in the laptop.
Unfortunately I don't have a burner yet or a tape-drive but hope to in a
little bit, or I'll just get another HD for backup.

So, I guess in my case, backup should be pretty fast.

I thought the answer would be 'dd' but I wanted to be sure.

Thanks for the helpful reply!

Subject: Disable DOS driver for large disks
Date: Fri, 10 Nov 2000 13:27:44 GMT

Until yesterday I had DOS and Win95 running on a 486SX-25. Because the
hard disk is larger than ~524 MB (it's ~1 GB), I had a program (driver?)
that gave DOS access to the whole disk.

That driver is started during booting, just after a large table with
the system specs (processor, memory, etc.) is displayed and just before
the autoexec.bat was executed.

Yesterday I installed SuSE 6.0. Installing did not give a problem :-)
However, booting does now: just after the driver is loaded (or: started
-- I don't know if it has loaded or not), I get an error: "PART ERR",
telling me to hit <enter> to reboot. Rebooting leads to this message
again, of course.

The driver gives the option to boot from floppy by hitting <ctrl> just
before it loads the disk driver thingie. Doing that without having a
disk in the disk drive, will load Linux and skip the driver.

I guess the error means "partition error" because it expects to find a
DOS disk instead of a Linux ext2 one. But Linux apparently doesn't need
that program to support hard disks.

So, how do I get rid of that driver? I can't find an option in
the CMOS Set-Up.

TIA,
- Willem

So the question is what is a 'normal' lib? Did you read
the man page for gcc? Did you look at the 'OVERALL OPTIONS'
and read the bits about the '-c','-S' and '-o' options?
Did you rad the blob about the 'LINKER OPTIONS'?

These should give you enuf clues about what you need to do.

What you think is irrelevant. Linux works. It works properly
for a lot of us. It is about time you get your thumb out of
your @^&$ and start reading.

Oh, we can't really help you if all you write is fluff and
the info we need is missing. What is in /etc/ld.so.conf?
What is the output of env? What is the exact error msg you
get? The answers to these questions will help for a start.

I MIGHT be off-base with this reply, as it is based only on what I've
read, some of that may be outdated, and I'm only now about to apply it
myself!

The advice is that the Linux boot partition should be below the 1023
cylinder mark on your hard drive, that is, below about 8+ GB. (Recent
PC BIOS's may allow violating that, but I'm not sure how.) So a
solution would be to use Partition Magic 5.0.1 or later (or another
partitioning tool) so as to shrink your Windows 2000 partition to a
couple of GB -- putting just the Windows 2000 system files there (i.e.,
\WINNT, \WINDOWS, \Program Files\Common) -- and putting the Linux /boot
partition -- which can be quite small -- immediately following it. You
could put your Linux swap partition next. Then partition the rest of
the space as you see fit between other Windows 2000 and Linux partitions
-- perhaps a Windows 2000 Programs partition and a Windows 2000 Data
partition; and for ease in backing up, split up everything below Linux /
(root) partition to put files that don't change often in one (or more)
partitions separate from files that do change often.

LILO has to be installed, then, on the Linux /boot partition, and of
course NT loader has to point to that.
