Greetings from a linux newbie...
I have a K6/400 machine at home
running Windoze 98SE and Redhat 7.0.
I have a cable modem as well as
a small home network. The cable
modem and all the other machines
are connected to a little hub.
I only have one NIC in the main machine,
Windoze doesn't have any problems
with that, but is this a security risk?
My main machine has the IP address
for my cable modem as well as 10.0.0.1
as a proxy server for the other machines.
For Linux, I setup an eth0:1 device to be
1.0.0.1 on the linux box, and I
*think* I have it sorta working.
I recently got Samba mostly setup.
I can now browse the linux machine
from the other Winblows machine, but
I can't print from the Win machine
on the printer connected to the
linux box, and the linux box can't
print to the printer on the Windoze
machine. Any ideas?
I'm now in the process of setting up
a proxy server for the other machines
and a firewall for the linux box.
I found a link to FireMasq on freshmeat.net.
I downloaded the script, and modified the
INETDEV to be "eth0",
LAN to be "10.0.0.1", and
LANDEV to be "eth0:1",
Whenever i run the script, my other
win machines can't see the samba devices
any more. What's up with that?
Thanks,
Ron Gregory

Subject: Interrupt sharing how ???
Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 23:26:46 +0100
For days I'm running mad to make my printer working. Now I think that
the reason is that there are not enough interrupts available.
I'm running Suse 6.2 with Kernel 2.2.10 . The kernel components for the
parallel port are compiled as modules. Module loading looks ok.
In the system there are 2 parallel ports which I want to use for the
Zip-Drive and the printer. As I take the Zip Drive to work it is not
permanently connected to the computer. So I use the Zip drive
occasionally and hook it to a cable that is permanently plugged in on
port 1. Port 1 is configured to IRQ 0x7 and 0x378.
The second parallel port is configured to IRQ 5 and 0x278.
Unfortunately there is a Fritz Classic ISDN adapter in the system. The
interrupt of the adapter is fixed to IRQ 5. The memory area is adaptable
via jumper and is now set to 0x300.
This configuration runs fine under the "other" operational system. When
looking up the system resources there is no IRQ indicated for LPT2 but
the memory area.
On Linux I tried to install the printer via YAST to lp1. Looked ok but
the /dev/lp1 is reported as not configured. In conf.modules I indicated
multiple parallel ports with their IRQs and memory areas. The printer
port lp1 remains not accessible.
Just for printing it may be fine to plug the printer to lp0 but the I
can forget about the convenience of a printer port for the Zip-Drive.
I hate plugging cables in and out.
I could not find a solution (that looked like a solution to me) in the
HOWTOS neither in the other docs.
Can one of you experienced guys give me a hint how to set up the system
so that it runs in the same way as it does with the "other" OS
Thanks in advance

Hi,
I have a startup script for setting up my isdn, but during the setup
(Mainly during BOOT), I need to determine the time of day, which then
determines which dialup number to add.
# Daytime number (Between 8am and 6pm)
# /sbin/isdnctrl addphone ippp0 out 084409xxxxx
# Nighttime number (Between 6pm and 8am)
# /sbin/isdnctrl addphone ippp0 out 084404xxxxx
so how would one do this in #! /bin/sh

Subject: Newbie: compile kernal? (USB modem support?)
OK, I just installed Mandrake 7.1, and I'm happy about that. I need to
be able to use my USB external modem. It's a Boca Tidalwave, hardware
corrected, not a "winmodem". The light comes on when I'm in Linux, so
it shows some signs of life, but when I try to communicate I'm told
there is no modem found.
A guy in another Linux forum told me I should try compiling a newer
kernel (specifically 2.4 -test10), which I wouldn't mind if I could be
sure it would help me with my problem. I can't be sure at this point
that my modem would be recognized. Anybody know for sure?
Email replies welcome.

Hi!
I hope someone can help me!
I have the following problem:
During the Installation of Suse 7.0 I had big Problems with the
configuartion of my Monitor. Everytime I've tried to chose a monitor the
setup hung up (even withe VESA). So I've chosen NO graphic Interface. With
"sax -s XF86_VGA16" I've finallay managed it to start the sax. But I
couldn't find neither my graphic card (Elsa Gladiac Geforce 2) nor my
monitor (Belinea 10 60 30) in the list. I would be very pleased if someone
could help me so I can use the graphical interface!
Thanx !

Subject: Turtle Beach Montego-II on Dell for RH 6.2!!??
Date: Mon, 13 Nov 2000 23:01:57 GMT
Hi, there:
My Dell PC has an OEM Turtle Beach Montego-II sound card. It used to
work well on RH6.0 with kernel 2.2.5. Lately I upgrade to RH 6.2, also
upgrade kernel to 2.2.17. (BTW, I don't want to use RH7.0 at all.)
For the sound card works, I download the driver which is aureal 1.1.1
version (also tried the other earlier versions, results are the same).
Follow the instructions (such as 'disable the PnP option in
bios', 'compile kernel to support sound, not in module'), and when I
do 'make install20' (or install, install30), error is always 'device is
busy'. I don't know what's going on. I tried this on both text mode and
Gnome.
The README file said that this 'device busy' error maybe caused by 'PnP
support in BIOS'. But I did turn it off!
Did anyone successfully config this card under 2.2.17 on RH6.2?
I don't know if this error is related to 2.2.17. And I'm considering to
try on 2.2.16.
BTW, I don't think I got any mistake to compile the kernel. 'cause the
module for my 3com NIC works fine, the other stuff also work like a
champ, such as video card, PPPoE.
Any suggestions or help?
Thnx a lot!!!

Just do `man rpm'. If you have a package that you want to know the files
of do `rpm -qlp <package>', if you already installed it - `rpm -ql

I think you'd need to change it at source level. As far as I can tell
you need to edit: /usr/src/linux/drivers/char/console.c
Even more usefull might be: /usr/src/linux/drivers/char/console_macros.h l
ines 44 and 45 (in kernel 2.2.17)
#define foreground (color & 0x0f)
#define background (color & 0xf0)

>is to change the whole font color in test based mode (maybe in green)
You probably don't want to alias ls to ls --color=always. The colorcodes
will be used even when they're not appropiate, such as when you pipe the
output of ls through more. Use ls --color=auto instead. You can set then
with the environment variable LS_COLORS. See "man 1 dircolors".

Hello sB -
I had the same problem, used the same fix. It looks like the GUI (which
is just a front-end to wvdial)just doesn't write to /etc/resolve.conf.
Auto DNS is supposed to be an option for wvdial (I *think*), but putting
a line "Auto DNS = 1" in /etc/wvdial.conf didn't help me.
The ISP tech person I've spoken with didn't want to give me any DNS
addys; I had to rely on written notes from a previous set-up. What's up
with that reluctance?
More to the point, is there a PPP package that has Auto DNS that works?

Have you tried the framebuffer server (XFB_Dev)? I had the same problem. I
tried everything I could think of with the SVGA server and nothing. So I tried
the framebuffer server and now I'm running X at 1024x768 and it looks great!
Have you found a way to get X working with the svga server? If you have,
how???!!! If not, try the framebuffer. (I'm running redhat 6.2 (XFree 3.3.6)
and an sis 630)
