That is nice, but the 2.4.0 kernel has not been released (see
ftp.us.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.4). The latest has the awkward name
"2.4.0-test11/pre4". Run "finger @ftp.kernel.org" for more recent updates.

Subject: win98 runs slow after reinstall of eDesktop 2.4
Date: Tue, 14 Nov 2000 01:17:29 -0500
Hello everyone,
After reinstalling the eDesktop 2.4, everything on the win98 partition
seems running very slowly. I wonder if the reinstallation of linux has
somehow affected the way win98 retrieve data on the hard drive.
The scenario of my hard drive is shown as follow:
3 OSs are on a 10.2GB hard drive. They are win98 (32-bit, 5GB), Corel
linux (1.5GB), and Caldera eDesktop 2.4 (3.5 GB). Win98 is a primary
partition. The two linuxs are in separate logical partitions within an
extended partition.
Could anyone explain to me why it happen? and how to solve the problem.
Thank you in advance.

if you are using lilo, add "mem=128M" to the "lilo.conf" file.
example:
--snip--
image=/boot/vmlinuz
root=/dev/hda2
label=linux
append="mem=256M"
--snip--

Then skip the mach64 server and start using the ati server IIRC the link
/etc/X points to the server you are using, delete it, and create the new
link. Make sure the contents of your XF86Config file match your
hardware!

Could be a limitation of the server you're using?

First of all I deleted some NG's from your list, make a choice, and post
there, it doesn't really matter, lots of people monitor more than one
group anyway.
This result stil shows the reason of your problem, The easiest solution
now, is to use DOS FDISK to create a new partition, that does start/end
at a cylinder boundary (DOS FDISK will do this for you) Then copy all
data from the old partition to the new partition, and remove the current
partition. after you've done that, you can use PM to move that partition
you've just created and add new partitions.
Unfortunately PM is very strict on what it allows in partition tables,
therefor it cannot handle partition tables that aren't compliant to
these strict rules (one of them is that partitions must start/end at
cylinder boundaries.

Thanks, Eric,
I don't expect to be recompiling the Kernel any time soon, so that
may not be a problem. The other two sugestions- adding the rest of the
systems to Lilo's list, or uninstalling Lilo and obtaining a bootsector
I can give the NT loader, sound more within my capacity.
Still, I'ld like to know where I missed the Lilo setup options during
installation!

Actually I meant a timeout during installation- like the system asks
"do you want to put LILO on the boot sector" and if you don't respond
in 30 seconds it goes ahead and does it and moves on.

Yes, indeed; in particular, they're all in Debian's main distribution,
which means that they're compliant with the Debian Free Software

abcde doesn't actually do the encoding. From the freshmeat entry:
abcde is a frontend to cdparanoia, wget, cd-discid, id3, and your
favorite Ogg/MP3 encoder (Oggenc is the default). It grabs an entire CD
and converts each track to Ogg/MP3, then comments or ID3-tags each file,
all with one command. It supports parallelization, SMP, HTTP proxies,
customizable filename organization and munging, playlist generation, and
remote distributed encoding via distmp3.
A very good piece of software.

If I try to play QuickTime 4 .mov files in xanim (the version
corresponding to Linux RH6.2), it says "Sorenson video not yet

Does anyone know:
1) When, if ever, Sorenson video will be supported by xanim?
2) If there's another way to play QuickTime movies under Linux?

The man page should also say that you need the '-d' option for dsa (at
least under openssh).

This brings up the issue:
How substitutable are "real" RAM and Swap Space in Linux?
In the installation for Peanut, it say to create a swap file that
brings the total of RAM & Swap to 32Mb ir something. This indicates
there is a full 1 to 1 substitutabiltiy.
Am I right in guessing:
functionally substitutable BUT RAM is accessed much quicker.
Thanks?

Thank you, most informative on the differences in the various windows

Do you (or anyone else) have information on the performance of Windows
Emulators vs a "real" Win95 install on another partion?
Issues:
- Speed for Word97 & Excel
- Relative stability :-)
- Disk Space Requirements
- How well they can render Word'97 & Excel Applications
Thanks!
