Because there's no *free* space, you partitioned it all.

Sure hope for you, that you left hda1 alone, or else NT is probably gone

I hope that LILO was installed, but I don't know corel. If that's true,
use a bootflop to boot your linux system, and run `/sbin/lilo -u` to
restore the old MBR.
Then reboot, and all should be well again (except you cannot boot linux,
and have to reinstall it)

Can we provide a drivers during Kickstart installation ?? I mean is
it possible to have kickstart configuration file and drivers on a NFS
server and then install Redhat 7 from NFS so that setup picks up
drivers from NFS server.

working with a debian potato system with kernel 2.2.14
fdisk:
Disk /dev/hda: 128 heads, 63 sectors, 781 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 8064 * 512 bytes
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 520 2096608+ 6 FAT16
/dev/hda2 521 551 124992 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 552 769 878976 83 Linux
/dev/hda4 770 781 48384 82 Linux swap
I cannot mount -t vfat -o rw /dev/hda1 /win
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/hda1,
or too many mounted file systems
I know /dev/hda1 is a valid filesystem because I can boot into it
from lilo and it is running MS NT4.0
I can mount -t ntfs /dev/hda1 /win
the only problem is that /win is then read only and no matter
what combinations of umask, uid, gid I use, even as root it is not
possible to write to /win
Having searched around a bit on the web I have noticed that quite
a few folks have been having problems with the vfat kernel module,
though noone has reported my specific problem with the ntfs module
that I am aware of.
Can anyone help me out here? does anyone know if this has been fixed
in some more recent kernel release? is there an alternative module/
mode I should be using?

Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 08:12:21 GMT
Howdy, all. I recently purchased a Zoom faxmodem (V.90 and K56Flex) to go
into a new box I built. Under Win2K it works just fine; it's a PnP modem
with on-board controller and DSP, so it should work under Linux. I'm
further encouraged by the fact that box and insert say it works with Linux.
Unfortunately, it just ain't so. At least, not yet. Under Win2K, it tells
me that it's set up to use the following I/O addresses and IRQ:
COM 3
I/O:
0xDC00-0xDCFF
0xE000-0xE0FF
0xE400-0xE4FF
IRQ 17
... A little nonstandard, but hey, it's a PnP card. Reading /proc/pci under
Linux gives me the exact same information.
So. I figure, COM 3 isn't in use, so I'll just set the serial port
appropriately:
setserial /dev/ttyS2 uart 16550A port 0xDC00 irq 17
... and symlink /dev/modem to /dev/ttyS2, and presto, I ought to be in
business. Simple, right? Unfortunately, it doesn't work. Red Hat's PPP
setup tools can't find any modem connected (no problem, thought I, just a
braindamaged druid, nothing new), and Minicom just hangs when I start it up.
It goes to the normal screen, gives the "Initializing modem" screen, and...
nothing happens. (It doesn't hang, per se--I can get out of it. It's just
that it's not in a usable mode, and it's not sending anything to the modem.)
This is extremely frustrating, given that the modem works fine in Win2K.
Please send replies to my email account as well as to the newsgroup. Given
that my dialup access doesn't work under Linux, sometimes it's hard to
access the newsgroups. :)

It is actualy more than slightly patched. If you install kernel.*.src.rpm
from the SRPMS dirctory you can see in /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES what
patches are actualy applied.

Install the kernel-source rpm package from the RH6.2 CD. Possible with
the --force flag to force package overwrite. The original config files
are found in /usr/src/linux/configs, one config file for each of the shipped
kernel versions (386, 586, 686).

You have absolutely no idea what a filesystem is, do you?
If hda1 contains an NTFS filesystem, it obviously must be mounted as
NTFS.
There is no (reliable) read/write support in linux for the NTFS, so it's
correct that you
cannot write to it.
Trying to mount a NTFS partition as FAT, will fail, because it's not a
FAT filesystem(Duh)
If you want to share a partition between windows and linux, format it
with a FAT filesystem.

You didn't read the documentation that comes with it.

No, not for NTFS (Microsoft isn't very helpful in giving free the NTFS
specs I suppose, and reverse engineering isn't easy. At this moment I
don't think anyone is working on it, so use FAT as your windows FS or be
left without write support to it from linux.

Hi,
Mount the RedHat CD and find the RPMS directory on the CD
(/mnt/cdrom/RedHat/RPMS IIRC). The kernel source is one of the few
'source' rpms on the 'binary' install CD.
As root type
rpm -U --force kernel-source-2.2.14-5.0.i386.rpm
..without --force rpm will tell you the package is already installed -
as you nuked the directory yourself the rpm database is out of step with
reality. ;-)
If you are lucky the .config file will be part of the rpm - normal
kernel tarballs don't have a .config which in some ways a shame.

No need for this (it would be nice if it would be in the standard kernel
though)
rerunning /sbin/lilo as vilmos suggested will do the trick in far less

Subject: Install/Partition Table/Fdisk problems
Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 01:03:24 -0800
I was setting up partitions for a new linux machine I was making, but
during the formatting stage of the RH 6.1 Install process, the system
hung. Since then I haven't been able to reformat the drive or get rid
of the partition(s) which were created. Instead every time I try to
install Linux and I get to the stage of indicating what kind of an
Install I want to do (gnome workstation, server, etc...), I get the
messge "an error occurred reading the partition table for the block
device hda: No such file or directory".
I tried deleting the partitions using dos fdisk, but all it could do is
see the partitions, it wouldn't let me delete them.
1. I'd like to try using a linux fdisk, but apparently my linux boot
floppy is dead - anyone know how/where I can get another?
2. MORE IMPORTantly - does anyone know how I can wipeout my partition
table and create a nice new clean one from scratch so I can install
linux on my hd. Currently I can install windows on this hd, but as far
as Linux goes, it just keeps reporting the same error above. BTW the hd
is a new 45gb, so I'm doubting that it's the source of the problems.
Thanks,
Al
