I have linux installed now I want to stick Win98 on a partition that I
have available. Win98 always thinks it is the only OS and never gives
you the option of installing onto a particular parition like Win2k does.
Is there any way to install Win98 "after the fact"? Or am I screwed?
Thanks

I was trying to install Win98 and there is a point where you can choose
whether or not to use large partitions (forgot acronym). It warned
that if you choose 'yes', that other OSs would not be able to read it.
Does this include Linux? Should I select 'no' instead?
Thanks!

Yes, I had the same problem recently. The problem is with the BIOS that
Gateway is using. It is (a variant of) Intel's OR840 BIOS, version 225.
Gateway says that there is no upgrade available for that BIOS, but in
fact,
Intel does have one. I downloaded version 245 from Intel's site, and
installed it on my machines. Then I reinstalled RedHat 6.2, and
everything worked fine.
The OS recognized all my devices, although I did have to hunt down a
driver for the on-board sound chip. (www.alsa-project.org had what I
needed, but their driver installation procedure is quite complicated.)
So far, I have had no problems at all with the upgraded BIOS, even
though it didn't come from Gateway. Please, note: I have only one CPU
in each of my PC's, but I understand that there is problem with the APIC
bus on the E5400's motherboard that affects dual-CPU systems. I don't
know if Intel's latest BIOS has fixed that problem. You might try using
the "noapic" kernel option if you get "IO-APIC" errors. (At least, that's
the advice I've heard.) Good luck.

Hi!
I hope someone can help me!
I have the following problem:
During the Installation of Suse 7.0 I had big Problems with the
configuartion of my Monitor. Everytime I've tried to chose a monitor the
setup hung up (even withe VESA). So I've chosen NO graphic Interface. With
"sax -s XF86_VGA16" I've finallay managed it to start the sax. But I
couldn't find neither my graphic card (Elsa Gladiac Geforce 2) nor my
monitor (Belinea 10 60 30) in the list. I would be very pleased if someone
could help me so I can use the graphical interface!
Thanx !

Is cron running? Do:
ps -afe|grep cron
You should see it running (ignore the grep command if it shows up in the
output).
If it is not there check your run level and if cron is activated in it. On
my machine cron is not activated in single user modes (init 1 and init S).
To test your cron scripts before messing with the init scripts I you can
just run cron from root and it will start.

If you are doing masquerading with ipchains you will need to load the

Hello all, please help .
I've had Linux installed on my system for a year and some now.
Here's whats' up: X windows has never really worked good . It was
slow, like I was running Windows '95 on a 386 or something (I have a
Pentium ii 300Mhz /98 Megs ram). Recently, I edited my XF86Config file
(I'm scared to touch this thing) I put in some new modelines for my
monitor, calculated from a posting describing how to do it. But, my
system seems to just skip over them or something as if they weren't
even there. I can't change the resolution by using 'ctrl - alt - +/-
keys' either.
So, I'm wondering, is there a way of seeing exactly what video
mode that X Windows is running in? Like, some log file or something? I
know how to switch between users or whatever by pressing 'ctrl - alt -
f1, f2, f7 '.
Also, I installed a new 'microcrap wheelmouse' on my box lately.
I found out how to set it up using 'mouseconfig'. It works on the
console, but not in 'X'. It jumps around the screen and acts like it
was on coke or something. DOes anybody know what's up with this ? I
don't care about if the wheel works, I just want to get my fucking
mouse working so I don't have to quit X windows every time.
If anyone knows any of this, and wants to help, I'll
appreciate it..

Subject: Modem heartaches
Date: 15 Nov 2000 16:22:08 -0500
Hi all,
I'm sorry to write about what is really strictly a hardware problem. But
since the only headway I've made has been Linux (Bigslack = Slackware
7.0, with self-compiled 2.2.17) on my Win98/linux dual boot machine, I
thought I might pick the knowledgeable brains on list ng.
My modem (an isa Aceropen F34PV, PVS Fax/modem, 33,600 bps), which has
always worked perfectly, both in Windows and Linux, at the same settings
(COM4/ttyS3, irq 3, io 2e8-2ef), has stopped working properly.
History: a couple of months ago I experienced severe computer crashes.
the machine would freeze up, though less so in LInux (surprise,
surprise), and could not even be reset or powered off - I had to unplug
the machine - and booting up again immediately would bring up a blank
screen - no BIOS, nothing - I had to wait, first a couple of hours,
towards the end a couple of days, for the computer to boot up again. So,
desperately tarballing all my files between crashes, during one of the
last crashes before bringing the machine to the shop, BIOS reported a
CMOS checksum error and... my modem stopped working. In Windows, the
modem couldn't (and still can't) be found ("... not responding. Make
sure your modem is connected... blablabla"). In Linux, ppp-go would very
slowly activate the modem, dial, and then the login script would fail
and the modem hang up.
Thinking the modem problem was a temporary symptom of the crash and
suspecting BIOS corruption (or something;-), I suggested a BIOS upgrade
to the technician, who flashed the BIOS and then kept the computer in
the shop for three days, running almost continuously without a single
crash. They could find nothing wrong (I hadn't told them of the modem),
and indeed, it hasn't crashed since. But the modem is still out of
order. In Windows, I uninstalled the modem driver and reinstalled about
five times, using different COM ports, to no effect (although switching
ports requires changing jumpers on the card, which I couldn't do,
because I've long since lost the second jumper cap that I never
needed;-(.)
So, how am I posting this message? (I'm glad you asked;-) By resetting
the serial port with the following command:
setserial /dev/ttyS3 auto_irq autoconfig
Result of which is that I can now use the modem, in Linux, albeit very
slowly (1.4 kbps is about the maximum throughput, and often a lot less).
After setting the port in this way,
# cat /proc/tty/driver/serial
gives the following:
serinfo:1.0 driver:4.27
0: uart:16550A port:3F8 irq:4 tx:0 rx:0 DTR
1: uart:16550A port:2F8 irq:3 tx:0 rx:0 DTR
2: uart:unknown port:3E8 irq:4
3: uart:16550A port:2E8 irq:0 baud:115200 tx:1188919 \
rx:4254168 oe:5 RTS|CTS|DTR|DSR|CD
irq 0!!! (rather freaky to think it was sharing irq with the system
timer, until the Serial-HOWTO informed me that irq 0 in such cases
means only that it hasn't really figured an adequate setting).
So, I suspect the modem itself is malfunctioning (a couple of times,
when attempting to dial, it failed while making a sort of banging noise,
like an obstructed door being repeatedly slammed shut).
However, before forking out CDN$ 120-130.00 for a new modem (which I
want to avoid, since in the near future I intend to establish some sort
of high speed access) I would like to know if anyone else may have
experienced the same problem, and may confirm whether this is a modem or
some low-level system configuration issue.
Many thanks in advance,
Ron

Subject: Fixing ramdisk position in memory
Date: Wed, 15 Nov 2000 22:28:01 +0100
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
I want to make a ramdisk in memory at a fixed location and use it for
swap. Why would I want this strange setup? This is a small machine
(80486DX/2 80 Mhz) used as router/firewall for my home-network. It's got
12Mb RAM on the motherboard with a 256kb cache. It also has an Everex
EV159 memory expansion board with 2,5Mb on the ISAbus. The memory on
this expansion board is not cached, so it's significantly slower
compared to the rest of the memory. Because of this I want to use it for
a fast swap-space.
I've read the BootPrompt HOWTO, linux/Documentation/initrd.txt and
linux/Documentation/ramdisk. The instructions in these documents are
sufficient to make a 2,5Mb swap-ramdisk and load it. The only question
remaining is: How can I make sure my swap-ramdisk will be loaded in the
upper 2,5Mb of memory, from 12Mb to 14,5Mb?
Thanks in advance for any help provided, Erik Laan.
P.S. By significantly slower I mean: booting the machine using the
expansion board (14,5Mb RAM) takes 9,5 minutes, with an mem=12m
kernel-argument it only
takes 2 minutes.

I was just indicating the command I used at startup, which I have also

I noticed setserial seem to react differently to configuration commands

Nope...that is what it returns...that is one of the things that I am
most suspicious about. I am very close to just chunking the stupid
thing and getting a new modem but first like I will get the new kernel.

I did use lspci -v prior and did identify that it had IO Port 0xb000 and
IRQ 0.
I even tried using IRQ 0 (which did not seem right) without much luck at
one point.

It initially gave the port as 0xb000 and the irq as 0 (yes 0 - doesn't
make sense to me either).
If I have two ttyS0 and ttyS1 (the second one, which I have disabled at
the bios level), does the ttyS2 matter as far as the sharing of ports
and irqs?

I presumed the COM number assigned was more hardwired (jumpered or some
modem configuration item)...but if I can, in software, make it whatever
I want that is nice, but I still seem to recall I wasn't able to use
another COM number due to it being in use or something as described in

I enabled the kernel "more than 4 COMS" option, thinking that to use
/dev/ttyS4 would require it...that may be an error though. I did that
because I was starting to run out of ideas as to how to get it to
work...and thought that might help...but I guess it wasn't the case.

You need a newer vesion of both gnorpm and rpm itself, both are
available, either from the updates pages or the errata pages for RH6.2.

BJR> /etc/crontab as follows:
[snip]
The crontab stuff isn't required as both rc5des and setiathome are
sufficiently self contained that once started, you can leave them alone,
they will, if you have demand dialing setup, or are on the net fulltime.
go get their required data all by themselves.
To that end, I start them in the /etc/rc.d/rc.local file with this code
snippet attached to the bottom of rc.local.
=============
cd /opt/rc5
su -c "./rc5des >/dev/null" gene &
cd /opt/setiathome
su -c "./setiathome -nice 20 >/dev/null" gene &
=============
Just to remove a huge gotcha, br sure and do a recursive chown on each
of those directories so they all run as a username (the 'gene' above,
not root. More secure I'm told. See man su, look at that -c option.
One could I imagine, also put this in as a shell script to be run from
/etc/rc.d/init.d/startcrunchers by setting links from there to
rc3.d/S99startcrunchers, and writing in the kill versions too, but both
of these respond correctly to a normal kill, saving their data as they
exit, so thats almost overkill/paranoid.
With this machine, and my office machine (which isn't doing the rc5
challenge) both launching seti via similar rc.local starters, I'm
standing a hair over the 97th percentile in seti processing, not too
shabby considering there are now something over 2.4 million other seti
users out there.
