Here's a tip, run:
ps -afe | grep [c]ron
Then the grep command itself doesn't show in the output!

I run StarOffice 5.2 and I swear by it. It is a great office suite! I
will give you this, it is darn slow to start up, but I guess it really
isn't too much slower than Office2000. The way it works is that it
actually loads the whole office suite at once instead of a single
application and you arrive a a sort of virtual desktop where you can get
all your stuff done. I have a windows box hooked to my linux box and I
switch back and forth all the time. It saves to .doc really well, the
only problem you will come across is if you use a feature in StarOffice
that is different than a feature from Word. Most things however convert
just fine...believe me, the people at Sun made sure of that. The only
thing I notices that doesn't convert is that in StarOffice you can
manipulate your graphs in a much more advanced way and when you save it
to Office format you are back to your original plot. Equations save
fine, tables save fine...etc. If you do finish your paper in StarOffice
and want a verbatum before printing somewhere else, you can always make a
.pdf by printing to postscript and then running the distiller. I was
working with wine for a while and actually got Office2000 working, but
then we all realized that saving and opening documents is out of the
question at the current state of the CVS, rendering it quite useless. I
guess Office97 works fine, but still, I think there are enough apps in
Linux now that running wine is not necessary. My advice, go with
StarOffice 5.2.

By reading your question I assume you must have Mandrake 7.1. The reason
I say that is because I had Mandrake 7.1 and had the same problem. It is
because it was a bug. Just run
kmenuedit
from the terminal as root and you will be able to edit the menu. Upgrade
to Mandrake 7.2 or a Linux op that has KDE2 and this is all fixed.

Hi,
I would suspect the cable - can you beg/borrow a hub and a couple of
known working 'straight' cables?
The big clue is the number of Tx packets vs the number of Rx Packets.
Both machines appear to be sending but not receiving.
Also the 'carrier' value is non zero - not sure what it means but it is
zero on my system.
Another thing to try is to make sure that the RJ45 (aka UTP) is selected
on the NIC (if a combo card). The little DOS utility usually supplied
with the card may help.
Another thing to check is that both ends agree on full/half duplex as
this would exhibit similar symptoms...
You didn't specify the NICs in use but connecting via crossed cables has
some issues with certain 3COM cards namely the 3C905 series. There are 3
all slightly different versions of this card. The easiest fix is to
switch to the 3COM driver available on the 3COM web site. Last time I
looked this driver would only compile with 2.2 kernels (2.2.12 on RH6.1
IIRC).

Thanks to your comprehension.
Hello,
I have a Logitech quickcam USB, and I downloaded the sources of modules,
following :
quickcam.c
quickcam.h
makefile
I put all them in a new directory and I typed make. I had an error
message like this :
/Makefile : any file or diretory present
'; needed by 'all'. Stop.target 'quickcam.o'
I have the last compilateur like automake 1.4, autoconf 2.13,
gcc-2.95.2, and qt 2.2.1, I thought that I needn't the last one.
I compiled these threes and insert them in my kernel 2.2.16. I all ready
compiled the USB modules, like usb-uhci.o, usbcore.o, etc... but it was
easy I did it with "make xconfig", etc.....
My question will be simple, how I could do for have quickam.o???
Thanks in Advance.

Subject: Bug in the INN-2.2.2-3 Package from Red Hat Linux 6.2 Serverinstallation?

Hi!
I have a Red Hat Linux 6.2 Serverinstallation (STANDARD), and I want to use
the INND-Service (only for lokal Newsgroups!). All other services (Apache,
WU-FTPD, Sendmail, Majordomo usw.) works fine!
The file "/etc/rc.d/init.d/innd" doesn't work! I had to Remark the following
lines:
---
# Check that networking is up.
if [ ${NETWORKING} = "no" ]
then
exit 0
fi
---
and I had to change the line "[ -d /usr/lib/news ] || exit 0" into "[ -d
/var/lib/news ] || exit 0".
Now the INND can start on bootup! But, this was a standard installation,
what is wrong? Is it an error from me, or from Red Hat? How can I correct
the Script, to work complete correctly?
Now I get some error-messages in the news-log-files, I can't find this
messages in the INN-F.A.Q. or on the old HOWTO-files. Ther is no 100%
working Information about the INND of Red Hat 6.2 - WHY?
After the bootup I get the following error.log's:

Subject: problem with ata66 disk
Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 01:04:41 +0200
Up to now I run linux from my master ATA66 HD connected to the hpt366
Controller of the motherboard. For this to work i use the following
settings: ide2=0xe000,0xe402 ide3=0xd400,0xd802. Recenrtly I installed a new
disk as master and the old one as slave. Now, although both disk are
recognized during the linux boot process immediately after (after a message
about ide0) the system locks up.
I think that it has something to do with the I/0 addresses. I narrowed the
problem down to the following: the address 0xe000,0xe402 is probably not
responsible for the problem (the system doesn't freeze) but also when it is
the only parameter to the linux prompt, doesn't enable the system to
identify my disks. On the other hand, the address ) 0xd400,0xd802 enables
the HD correct identification but causes my PC to lock. Any suggestions on
this problem??? Thank you in advance!

Subject: Static IP Nightmare
Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 11:21:21 GMT
I am trying to configure my 3Com 3C905B-TX NIC card to connect to my
cable provider (@Home) I am about to pull my hair out because I've tried
DHCP and static to no avail. It could be any number of things with DHCP, so
I scrapped it and I'm trying to go static. I cannot for the life of me
figure out where I am going wrong. I have a Windows box (not surprsing) and
I used winipfg to get the following values:
Host name: CC661256-B.pinev1.home.com
DNS Servers: 24.8.119.17, 24.8.119.15
Node Type: Broadcast
IP Address: 24.181.137.185
Sub. Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 14.181.137.185
DHCP Server: 24.2.1.70
In Linux (Red Hat 7.0), I have set the following values using Network
Configurator:
Hostname: CC661256-B.pinev1.home.com
Domain: home.com
Nameservers: 24.8.119.17, 24.8.119.15
Hosts:
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
24.181.137.185 CC661256-B.pinev1.home.com CC661256-B
Interfaces:
lo 127.0.0.1 - proto(none) - atboot(yes) - active(active)
eth0 24.181.137.185 - proto(none) - atboot(yes) - active(active)
Routing:
Default Gateway: 24.181.137.1
Default Gateway Device: eth0
Interface: eth0 - Network Address: 24.181.137.185 - Netmask:
255.255.255.0 - Gateway: 24.181.137.185
That is it, all of my information. I am using the correct kernel module
for my NIC card as well (3c59x.o) It could be something as silly as my DNS,
I have no idea. I've ran netstat and I am getting data, but that is about
it. Are there any files I need to edit that aren't taken care of Network
Configurator or LinuxConf? I am admittedly a Linux newbie, but I am really
clueless here. I've read FAQs and tried to figure this out myself, but
maybe it is all just a bit over my head. Bless anyone that actually takes
the time to read and decipher this long mess.

I have finally got RH installed on this disk, and moved to the HPT370
controller.
One of my problems I think was that the /boot partition was not <1024, which
led me to rely on booting from floppy.
Some judicious repartioning and a reinstall allowed me to install RH with th
disk attached to the mobo ide controller.
Then by using the append line in lilo.conf, I could persuade lilo that the
boot and root were really on a different ide channel.
The only difference in my last attempt was the fact that there was a /boot
parition <1024 cylinders that lilo could use, as opposed to the floppy.
Thanks to all those who helped !

In RedHat 7.0 the hostname should be CC661256-B and the domain should be
pinev1.home.com, not the entire thing as the hostname as in Windows.

My own preferred solution for this is to use LILO, and to tell LILO to
hide one windows system partition when booting the other. Something
like this (based on part of my lilo.conf file)
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda3 # Note LILO in linux root, not MBA
#....
change-rules
type=Win_NT
normal = 0x07
hidden = 0x83
type=FAT_32
normal = 0x0b
hidden = 0x83
# End LILO global section
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/hda5
label = Linux
read-only # Non-UMSDOS filesystems should be mounted read-only for checking
# NT bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda1
label = "Win NT"
change
partition=/dev/hda2
set=Fat_32_hidden
partition=/dev/hda1
set=Win_NT_normal
# NT bootable partition config ends
# NT bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda2
label = "Win 98"
change
partition=/dev/hda2
set=Fat_32_normal
partition=/dev/hda1
set=Win_NT_hidden
# NT bootable partition config ends

Subject: Installing my SMC firewall
Date: Thu, 16 Nov 2000 07:08:52 +0500
Ok, after getting cracked a few weeks ago I bought a little
firewall/router box from SMC and I'm trying to get it installed. Can
somebody give me a quick summary of the steps I'm going to need to do?
Here's what I figure:
my DSL box has address x.x.x.X
my only machine has address y.y.y.Y
So I'm supposed to set the IP of the SMC box to y.y.y.Y...
Tell the SMC box that it's gateway is x.x.x.X
Make up a new address for my machine.
Set the gateway of my machine to x.x.x.X
Is that right? I've noticed that netconf seems to not be helping me with
this -- every time I try to use the GUI tool to change my IP info, it
won't let the changes be accepted. I leave the screen and come back and
my changes haven't taken affect. What's up with that?
What services do I need to restart manually if I modify the netconfig
files by myself?
Thanks!
Duane
