looks like either ld or login is broken..maybe a lot of other things,
too. I'd boot from a rescue media, like a live CD or a root and boot
disk and back up the entire data segment and reinstall the rest. of
course you can try to fix it by doing fsck and fixing each suspicious
file.

No wonder for such an error msg. Where can I get X dev stuff? I am
using RedHat 6.1 dist. and kernel 2.2.16 was recently compiled &
installed.

Use a command similar to:

kgcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall \
 -Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c via-rhine.c \
 `[ -f /usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] &&  \
  echo -DMODVERSIONS`"

(replace via-rhine.c with the name of your *.c)

I am getting this error when i am booting up from my RH6.2 Linux box.
Any idea how to fix it? I tried fscking the disk, cleaned and repaired
but didn't help.

Mounting proc filesystem dup2: Bad File Descriptors [failed]
configuring kernel parameters dup2: Bad File Descriptors [failed]
Setting Clock dup2: Bad File Descriptors [failed]
Loading default keymap/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit: /dev/null: Read-only File

Any help would be appreciated.

Subject: RH6.2, Does not Recognize SCSI Host or Device
Date: Fri, 17 Nov 2000 04:02:09 GMT

Hi! Running RedHat 6.2. I have a problem that is causing me no end of
frustration. I tried to install a system so taht I can run backups.
Currently running Linux off of a IDE hard drive. I installed an old
BusLogic 946C SCSI card and a Iomega JAZ drive.

All seemed ok, the card was recognized upon system start, and running the
BusLogic internal utilities showed that the Jaz drive was also recognized
(SCSI ID 4).

When I let Linux continue to boot, the BusLogic was recognized at the new
hardware detection section, and it identified the card correctly and
installed the driver.

All ok. But when I boot, I see no SCSI hosts and no SCSI devices. I tried
with different cards (Iomega branded SCSI card for the Jaz) and a Tekram
controller. In each case, the situation was the same. First I was prompted
to uninstall the old driver, install the new driver, and then no SCSI
devices.

I have to be doing wrong that is really simple. Any help appreciated.

I installed Red Hat Linux 7 last week in the last 4 GB or a 20 GB disk,

taking about 10 minutes to get past all the periods. Can anyone tell me
if this is normal, and if there is a way to speed this up?

The place to look for answers on printers is the Ghostscript web page,
since (#$%^& near) all printing nowadays goes through it.

Does Linux 2.2.5 (RH 6) supports 2 scsi interfaces?

I have an onboard aha-7890 and a PCI SCSI card
aha- something.

When rebooting, the kernel can initialize the disk
(id #3) (a Seagate). The boot disk is ok. This is on the
on board scsi disk.

The message is: cannot reset device at channel 0 host 1.

If i take off the PCI scsi card, all is ok.

Is this a IRQ conflict?

X on my old '486-100Mhz is fine (96Mb ram, 4 Mb Matrox MII). On my
p100 laptop, (Accelerated) X is marginally better, but hardly earth
shaking. As Desktop X Window Workstations go, they both beat Sparc
Ultras I've worked with.

As for the original question, Debian installs a nice small base
system, then lets you pick and choose whatever else you want/need once
that fully working base system is installed. "Whatever else ..." can
come from anywhere (CD, ethernet, modem, Win98 partition, ...).

You're almost there. Use "linuxconf" or "netconf" to finish the job.

See I have already done what both of you have said. I configured Linux
to connect to the internet by going into linuxconf and putting in there
my ppp settings. When I connect to the internet, I type ifup ppp0 at a
console window with no GUI. It works great in KDE and every other
desktop and worked great in GNOME until I upgraded it to Helix GNOME.
But now it wont work in Helix GNOME anymore.

It will NEVER detect this card. What you need is the
xfree 4.0.1 x window version and the Nvidia drivers
from http://www.nvidia.com/drivers . Follow all directions
in the FAQ on nvidias web site. Also read the xfree 4.0.1
installation readme files. And please backup your /etc/X11
and /usr/X11R6 directories BEFORE you do anything.

You might consider using loadlin. Very simple solution for your
