The HOWTO mentioned that some drives have that problem and I've done the
ejection thing with no joy.
It IS good to hear you've got one that works with Linux. I thing I'll
try cdrecord 10.x (I've got 1.9) and kernel 2.2.17 (I've got 2.2.16) and
if that doesn't work, I'll return it.

Maybe I'll try it as a single master before I give up. It's hard to
believe that stuff isn't working OK (I've even done IDE-CDROM to
IDE/SCSI-CDRW transferrs with full FIFO and no error messages and both
drives read pre-recorded CDs fine).

What's "HTH" mean?
Thanks for letting me know about your success with this drive.
I expect that will be the most helpful info I'll get as this
is a tough kind of problem to solve.

Big shock that you're having problems...what an amazingly crappy piece of
software. Long load times, slow performance (although it does render web
pages quickly), crashes...
Two suggestions, based on my personal experiences, which don't necessarily
mean anything:
1.If this is the first time you've run NS6 after installing it, run it as
root first, even if it's just from a superuser shell. I had that problem
with Mozilla a lot - still do - it seems to want to run as root initially
to take care of some things. After that, any user can run it. That could
just be some quirk in my setup, but it can't hurt to try.
2. Make sure MOZILLA_FIVE_HOME is set to the directory NS6 is installed in.
You can add the variable to /etc/profile so it gets caught all the time.
Don't forget to export it. If you still have NS4.x installed, you can leave
MOZILLA_HOME set to the directory that it is in, and you'll be able to run
them both.

Because RH 7.0's gcc notoriously can't compile the kernel. Try using
kgcc (there should be a package of that) instead.

If Corel have borrowed Debian's menu package too, then it should indeed
happen automagically. You may need to 'apt-get install menu' beforehand,
though.

You might try ~/.bashrc instead. Do any other commands (e.g. 'echo
hello') in ~/.bash_profile work for you? Note that that file is only
sourced for login shells, and xterms frequently aren't set up to be
login shells. The 'INVOCATION' section of 'man bash' has more details.

You might want to look into PMFax for Linux. As I recall,
they have (had?) a network version. The OS/2 version is
excellent. I downloaded the Linux version a few days ago.
You can find them @ http://www.kellergroup.com/

How does that work? If I just rpm the package, will "make" will use
it instead of gcc, or do I have to do some kind of additional
command-line directives during kernels rebuild?

I've got an Acer 8432 and it works great under Linux. However, using
the latest XCdroast w/RH7.0 put me back a few steps. I ONLY use
Xcdroast to make the ISO images and not actually burn them. Xcdroast
gives me the same error also. I'm thinking about getting a previous
version of Xcdroast back on.
Anyway, use xcdroast to make the ISO image, and then use cdrecord
manually to burn it.

If your /etc/modules.conf has 'alias eth0 tulip' in it, then put, in the
beginning of /etc/rc.d/init.d/network 'insmod pci-scan'. Once your
computer boots up and begins to search for a network, it'll insert the
module, and the rest should work normally.
You might also need to configure the eth0 in linuxconf or netconfig
first for dhcp.

H there,
I have I think a serious problem.
I'm french but I'll try to explain simply. ;)
Last time I shut down Linux (Mandrake 7.0) there was no problem.
But now when I boot on Linux there's no more partitions!
My hard drive is built this way:
partition principal :
win98 (c:)
extended partitions with logical partitions:
/boot
/swap *2
/
/home
/tmp
/var
Fat32
When I use fdisk or partition magic it says the second partition is
unallocated.
When I use the partition tool from Mandrake it says my allocating table
is damaged and cannot be restored. :(
I didn't write down each size and places of my logical partitions and I
didn't save the table somewhere on a floppy disk.
But is there a way to restore my extended partition and of course to get
back my stuff?
If I make again partitions and don't format them can I find my stuff
back?
Any hope? ;)
Thank you
Patrick

No, I know that it's using 2.96. Is that the problem compiler? If
so, I'm not sure what to do next. I've read the gcc HOWTO, and it
says to change with a "gcc -V (desired compiler) -v"
But when I look in /usr/lib/gcc-lib/i386-redhat-linux I see only two
directories:
2.96 and egcs-2.91.66
I tried the "gcc -V egcs-2.91.66 -v" to no effect--it still told me
that it was using 2.96.
I tried RPMing the kgcc compiler, and was informed that it was already
installed. If so, where is it, and what's it called, and how to I
make it the default?
