Subject: BeOS & Linux Mandrake 6 Boot problems

Can anyone help with this problem?

I have a Tosh portege 3010CT I setup a 750MB fat partition and put dos on it
then used a pcmcia cd drive to run bewrite and write the contents of the
BeOS 5 cd to the HD ( The cd drive won't work with BeOS!). After this I
booted using the beos image on the drive and created another beos partition
and ran the installer within beos to set up to the new partition (this seems
long winded but its the only way I can get it to work, also this is what the
instructions with bewrite say to do) then deleted the partion with the cd
image.

Finally I ftp from another machine onto the beos partiton a zipped up
mandrake 6 dist. and unzipped it to the fat partiton and used the boot disk
to set up linux from the fat partion (creating the necesary swap & linux
ext2 partitons as per the mandrake installation).

The problem arises when linux tries to do the boot part it comes back with
errors something to the extent of it can't create lilo

The Be Bootman seems to be able to add it to its OS list but when you try
and boot from it it says "boot sector signature not found"
and hangs.

I can use loadlin from the dos partion but I get loads of errors like
system.map is using wrong kernel version.

As I'm new to linux (I have installed it before on other machines but at the
moment I don't know my wy around it to well!!)
does anyone have any suggestions how to make either everything boot from
lilo or deos bootman (preferable BeOS bootman)

Thanks in advance

Andrew King .

I am totally new to linux, but learning fast.

I have installed RH7.0 in the following configuration:-
/ ext2 800mb
/usr " 3600mb
/usr/local " 2500mb
/home " 800mb
swap swap 300mb

It installed , no problems but i cannot get x to instal.
I log in the root & password then try to get it to run.
No joy, i know I'm doing something wrong and hopefully somebody will put me
right

Thanks in advance

huh, the floppy's still busted on mandrake 7.2 anyway:
can't I just do
$ grub --show-what-will-do-at-next-boot
and it will output what it plans to do at next boot without really booting.
Does it have such a feature?

I reccomend mandrake 7.2 or redhat 6.2 (7 has some issues). Mandrake is
much nicer than redhat 7 and could be good if you aren't used to RH like
I am - getting too used to RH.

I talked to the guys at Bugzilla about a similar
problem. They suggested the following:

Try booting into the installer with the 'nousb'
option - 'linux nousb' and see if that works.

Hope that helps. I haven't tried it yet. Let me
know if it works for you.

Put the following in the mouse section of XF86Config if you're using x4:

I'm trying to setup a new Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card Model LNE100TX.
It is working with Win98 so I know that the hardware is OK.

There were instructions that said to build a new tulip.o file, but I'm
running RedHat 7.0 so I'm assuming that I have the latest.

When I try to insert the module I get:

#insmod tulip.o
tulip.o: unresolved symbol netif_rx_Rsmp0a3fcdc4
tulip.o: unresolved symbol eth_type_trans_Rsmp02771567
tulip.o: unresolved symbol skb_over_panic_Rsmp4f682074
tulip.o: unresolved symbol init_etherdev_Rsmp3808c591
..

Anyway get this card working?

Thanks

No aurguments here. Speaking of pains, Windoze can give you the same type of
gratification.

I've been playing around with BEos. It seems to work well, but there aren't
alot
of apps at this time.

For now I keep Linux on it's own little drive, and I'll play around with it
once and awhile....... maybe some day I will be able to break away from
Windoze.

It's good to hear some positive things about Linux. Maybe I'll try a

I am using SuSE7.0 and Hylafax which was included in the release.
It was easy to setup and I had to change only two entries in the
configuration file to make it my Hayes Optima work with Hylafax. The
information was provided by the Hylafax mailing list.

On the Linux Clients I am using SuSEFax and on the Windows/NT clients
I am using the Whfc client.

I had a similar USB related problem. I submitted a bug to bugzilla and
got the following answer from the RedHat guys:

****************
Please try booting into the installer with the 'nousb' option,
like 'linux nousb' and tell us if that helps.

I haven't tried their suggestion yet. Let me know if it works for you.

=====1st======
About choosing a linux distribution for newbies...better take
SuSe...it has the floor-to-ceiling features without sacrificing ease of
use...if you have to be used on it...grab SuSe 7.0 for more SuSe power coz
it has the nuts-and-bolts of networking....im also using it!!!

=====2nd======
If got the idea on installing Windows on a Linux partition, maybe you
want it to be dual boot system...but if you really want your linux to
perform on its peak performance...install Linux in its native partition!!!

======3rd=====
Dont ever try installing Corel or Debian Linux Distributions...coz
it'll make you DUMB!!!! -not for newbies-

======4th=====
If you have any doubts 'bout my reply, tell me!!!

Subject: Re: help with Linksys etherfast LAN Card
Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 19:36:22 -0500

Peter,
I fought long and hard with the identical card running Mandrake 7.2. It does
work. But I have to manually load it each time I want to use it. The tulip
driver that is built into the kernel does not work with the card at all. I
was able
to get linux to recognize the card using the apricot driver. It would load,
but not work.
Linksys offers no help at all. But don't give up.Download the latest driver
at Linksys
site.

To get it to work:
Unpack the archive to a temp folder.

Become root or super user and open the console
at the unpacked folder.
To compile:
Run "Make" (no quotation marks)
Then "Insmod pci-scan.o" (this is the letter o not zero!!!)
Then "Insmod tulip.o" (again the letter o)
Then "Depmod -a"
Then "Ifup eth0" (this one is a zero) assuming this is the only ethernet
card in the machine.
Then "Ifcfg" (you should see the card, mac address, mtu, etc...)
To change mtu run "Ifcfg eth0 mtu (value) I set mine for 1452 for ADSL.

Hint: One of the (stupid) mistakes I was making was the fact that I
forgot to load the development rpm's, so I wasn't able to fully compile!!!
