PROBLEM:
After successfully installing suse7.0 with yast2,
/opt //dev/hda16, reiserFS) and /home (/dev/hda17, ext2fs) cannot be mounted
any more; the device entries in /dev are MISSING. ("special device not
found") - and this although there must have been data that have been copied
to those (installation with yast2 without errors, apparently)!!!
[/proc/partitions includes entries for hda16 and hda17.]
(Note: The reason why I have so many partitions is that on the same disk
there are Win98, Win2000 and data partitions.)
ATTEMPT TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM:
In /etc/fstab there were WRONG ENTRIES as for the filesystem - which I've
corrected; besides, I added the missing /dev/hda16 and 17 entries manually
per mknod, chgrp and chmod - without any success: "bad magic number in
superblock" at both partitions.
(NO) REAL SOLUTION:
Create the concerned partitions INCLUDING filesystems, e. g. with the rescue
system, add missing /dev/hdaxx entries manually, after that force yast2 NOT
to format these partitions and install.

I know that NICs, model 8029 / 8139 chipset by Realtek are supported by
the kernel.
Take a look at the configuration tool of the kernel (cd /usr/src/linux;
make menuconfig)
There youll find those cards supported by the kernel and, thus,
supported by any Linux distribution.

You will need to create a 2nd partition on your drive and install Suse their.
That was my problem, I used the program Fips2 in the Dosuitl folder of disk
number 1. There are other programs like Partion Magic but they cost money.
Fred, I just got Suse7 on, but still trying to get my modem to work.

I am a total novice as far as Linux goes. My background is DOS and Windows
(3.0 - 98). In the near future I will be purchasing an Athlon based system,
and would like to install Linux for server hosting.
My question is: Which release of Linux will be best for my purposes? I had
originally intended to install Red Hat Linux 7.0, but reading some of the
problems I hesitate. I have also been trying to research other releases, and
Mandrake-Linux has caught my attention. What, if any, advantages or
drawbacks are there?
Any and all help appreciated.

Both are fine and good to start with. Mandrake is based on RedHat and has
some improvements: Mandrake has everything compiled and optimized for the
Pentium, while RedHat packages are compiled and optimized for 386 only.
(i am not sure about RedHat 7 though.) Also Mandrake seems to be a lot
faster with putting out updates (as far as i can tell from rpmfind.net).

I've been using Mandrake faithfully since 5.0 and also dual boot into
Caldera edesktop 2.4 and have used Kondara and Red Hat on a regular
basis....and the thing that keeps me coming back to Mandrake is the
outstanding hardware support....they seem to be frequent enough with updates
to keep including new HW....my advice....try a few but you'll come back to
Mandrake for its ease of use...support software includes...good luck..

NFS shares and domains refer to the information required to mount other
unix file share (ie. this wont work with windows). I am unfamiliar with
Mandrake but I know redhat offers samba (windows file sharing), http and
ftp support as installation methods, although i've had little luck with
any of these methods.

Hi all
I have to install a RH Linux system on a computer with a NE2000, respectively
an AMD PCnet NIC. Unfortunately there are no drivers available anymore on the
boot disks, nor on the additional "drivers.img".
Where could I find those drivers and how could I create such an additional

If you're looking for an ethernet card that you can pop in and will work
the first time and that doesn't cost too much, try the Netgear FA310TX.
It is only 10mbs, but this is good enough for home. I got a home network
kit for 69$ which included two cards and a hub, the same price for a low
end 3com.
I struggled with the Linksys EtherFast 10/100 and never got it working so
I through in the towel. Don't believe Redhat's hardware compatility site,
it is NOT easy to install. I spent a whole day and never got it working.
The Netgear FA310TX I got working in no time at all.
Hope this helps some

If I'm not mistaken, this indicates a routing problem,
probably your default route is not correctly set up.

I had a bad experience updating from 7.1 to 7.2. I had a partition about
1.5GB,
the original 7.1 takes about 0.8GB. If you have a new installation, this
is enough disk space for a complete installation. For upgrating, you will
have only the
two options (300MB minimum or 800MB recommended, no complete
installation). I chose 800MB recommended packages, then the update failed.
Somehow, the updating process does not delete the old 7.1 files, before the
updating is
completed. Then, the updating stops at the middle. The reason is no disk
space left (which the updating process did not tell you). I have to reboot
the PC. At that stage, the old 7.1 is not working completely. I tried to
reboot into 7.1, but I can not even mount /mnt/windows. Finally, I have to
boot into failsafe mode of 7.1, and mount /mnt/windows, to put some backup
files there, then have a new clean installation.

Subject: Destroyed my system: Error in loading shared libraries!!!
Date: Thu, 23 Nov 2000 02:17:00 GMT
Hi all
I tried to upgrade my Linux RH v6.1 to v7.0 with the update software on the
netboot floppy disk image. It loaded all the new package information from the
FTP server. But then, during the comparison to the installed packages, it
always crashes.
So because nobody helped me here, when I asked, how to manually upgrade the
system, I tried it with rpmfind and rpm. This broke my system because of all
those libc dependencies. I can't login anymore:
/usr/bin/gdm: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libglib-1.2.so.0:
symbol getpwuid_r, version GLIBC_2.1.2 not defined in file libc.so.6 with
symbol reference
How can I repair that? I can't boot from a CD-ROM, but I can still boot the
computer from the harddrive and remote login.
Thanks for any help!

>Now, which distribution should I buy?
If you can't do without the tech support, go with RedHat or Corel, and
I'm unsure about Caldera, Mandrake, and SuSE. With Debian and Slackware,
you're on your own, minus the Linux Community support here on the net.
Redhat, Mandrake, and SuSE seem to be the most popular, in that order.
Initially, I went with RedHat, even though I plan switching to a much less
commercialized Debian here shortly. (For purely personal reasons, I don't
want a distro that comes with a modified kernel, and I've always taught
myself when it comes to computers.) As a new user to Linux, I would find
out which distro comes with the most complete level of configuration. Half
the stuff RH6.2 installed on my drives wouldn't even run until I'd
configured them myself. Dunno if RH7.0 is any better...
>Do I have to install Windows first?
If your distro doesn't come with a boot floppy, and if you cannot boot
from CD-ROM, you'll need at least MS-DOS to create a boot floppy via the
rawrite command (included on the CD). You use rawrite to copy a "boot.img"
file to the floppy disk, from which you can boot the computer and start the
installation. (rawrite can also be run from Windows.)

any browser, including netscape, would be quick to start as well if half
of it was already loaded when you boot the computer. It's called
integration. MS thinks its a good idea or something. Unfortunately they
don't give us an option as to which programs we want integrated.
