We have just tried two different dual boot setups
of Win2k and Linux Redhat 7.0. Both have Win2k on
hda and Linux on hdb, with a small /boot partition
as hdb1. LILO was installed in hdb1.
The first system used NTFS on the Win2k drive, and
appears to have exactly the same problem as
described by Murray Eisenberg; the boot floppy
is ignored. The floppy drive was replaced, but
no obvious hardware error was found.
The second system used FAT32 on the Win2k drive,
and here the Linux boot floppy is recognised.
The Linux kernel image appears to be read from
the floppy, but after some time the process
is aborted and reports Error 0x10. After this
the boot restarts (with the same result in an
endless loop until power is turned off). No other
messages appear in this loop.
Any comments or bright ideas would be appreciated.

Fooks,
My Linux still hangs when I write someting to the tape: /dev/st0. (I run
RedHat 7.0), for example: tar -cvf /dev/st0 /home
can someone please tell me how to debug that ? (how do I reinstall the
driver for example ?), or what is the possible cause.
Please help me as I am still not able to solve it.

Hi gang:
I recently purchased the NetGear FB105 net starter kit. It contained two
FA311-TX NICs. After installing these boards my RH61 boot-up did not
recognize them either. I went to the NetGear web site
(http://www.netgear.com). In their customer service section I found(via a
search using fa311 & linux) a file containing the source for the driver for
this card. This should work with yours as well.

Is there a Linux Users Group close to you? You can't really expect
someone to immediately produce answers to questions. Sometimes the
right person just happens across your question, and you get help. But
we aren't under contract or anything like that.
>How can I repair that? I can't boot from a CD-ROM, but I can still boot the

My guess is that you will have to "reinstall" your operating system.
If you have a CD (even your old v6.1), do it from that. The only
thing you will want to do different, is to say no to questions like:
1) change partition information (your partitions are fine)
2) format partitions (you already have good Linux partitions)
3) Make swap (you already have a good swap)
So, skipping over these destructive (to your old filesystem)
questions, the installation program should just start overwriting
files on your machine. You should end up with a working system, to
which you can again try to update to v7.0. I say should, because all
I've ever installed is Slackware and Debian.
When you go to upgrade to 7, if you have the disk space you would
probably be better off downloading all the rpm's to your disk, and
then installing them locally. That way, if your connection goes down
or FTP crashes or something like that, you won't actually have your
system in some state where it won't function.

You haven't given enough data. But, the emu10k1 has been supported in
the kernel archive since 2.2.17, possibly even in 2.2.16-3. If you set
it as a module when you build the kernel, then a simple
alias sound emu10k1
in (for RH) /etc/conf.modules inits it at boot time. Great card IMO.
Cheers, Gene

ftp install across a network will work without much problem, at least on
Suse (haven't tried Mandrake, but it must provide a similar option). A
small ftp daemon or server will have to be installed on the Windows box,
since the workstation configuration doesn't provide one. Pick up a
freeware server at one of the windows archives, install it, then decide on
an IP for the Linux machine, give it the network's netmask. Point the
Linux ftp install to the IP of the Windows machine and the directory the
CDROM was set up under for the FTP server, and let it run.

somebody told me to pick hard disk optimization upon installing Mandrake 7.2
stupid me. After the grub quiz panel, it freezes. It is due to ide0=autotune
in grub's menu.lst.
I had learned to remove ide0=autotune at the grub prompt but was getting tired
of it on my frequent reboots, silly me. Note at this point I could still indeed
boot into linux.
somebody told me to get the ide0=autotune out of grub I had to run the Mandrake
7.2 installation disk in upgrade mode. stupid me. It indeed got ide0=autotune
out of grub and lilo's configuration files, but when I rebooted, grub gave me
"stage1" and froze, the rescue lilo floppy gave L 101010...
Hmmm, could it be that the Mandrake update script didn't fully do the job so I
then did:

But now grub just gives tones of greek flying upwards.
Due to Grub documentation writer not explaining any of these
situations, I stuck on LILO instead,
it is giving me "LI" and stopping.
The only way back into my system is boot from CD.
I can still manipulate lilo, but grub isn't around or something even though
I "chroot"....

I nottice in the comparison between old and news grub menu.lst
files, apparently grub goes into more detail than lilo with its () notation.
also, not only is autotune is rightly gotten rid of, but
hd0 is replaced with hd1! Perhaps the is due to when I first installed
I detatched other the windows drive hda, and now have reattached it.
And the mandrake update script noted it and now isnt calling things
relateve to hdb anymore?
[both files say to install into hdb, I don't have that part handy at the
moment.]
