Subject: I keep getting kicked offline (cable modem)
Date: Sat, 25 Nov 2000 02:29:16 GMT
I have a cable modem through mediaone and about every 12 to 24 hours I get
kicked offline, and basicly loose my ip address. (if I run ifconfig, shows
no ip on eth0) If I run #ifup eth0 I will get my ip address back, and I
will get the same one I had before I lost it. I have been trouble shooting
this for days with no luck... Please let me know if you have any other
ideas....
Here is what I have done
Reinstalled redhat 7 three times = didn't work
Tried it on windows = Worked
Tried a different nic = didn't work
It did all work about 2 weeks ago, then one day it just quit. I have tried
it on windows and I have no problmes. My isp doesn't support linux so they
won't help me. I am lost here... Any help would be GREAT
Thanks

Linux and Samba can do it. It's usually easiest to mount a filesystem
using the smbmount command, but that's not a browser -- you must know
the name of the server and the share you want to mount. There are
several GUI browsers for SMB/CIFS networks, though. Here are pointers to
three:
LinNeighborhood: http://www.bnro.de/~schmidjo/
Kruiser: http://devel-home.kde.org/~kruiser/
xSMBrowser: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~chadspen/
This isn't a complete list; there are others, but I don't happen to have
any URLs at hand.

I don't know how "streamlined" it is (even though I just installed it
on my old 486), but there's a version of Mandrake 7.0 for the i486.
http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/ftp.php3#486
I think there's also a version of Debian for i386, but don't have a
URL for it.

You need to use either dhcpcd or pump, which will automatically renew the
lease (basically, lease for ip address) that you get from your ISP's dhcp
server and expires after a time specified by the server. I recommend using
dhcpcd because pump sometimes chokes when the ip address changes on non
static connections.
You didn't mention what distribution of Linux you are using and the
configuration varies from distro' to distro', so you'll have to provide
the group with more info. to be able to help out with configuration.

Hey all,
I've got what should be a simple question, but I can't figure it out. I'm
running RH6.1, kernel 2.2.17. I want to update my printtool rpm to the
latest. I downloaded the latest from RedHat, but when I try to install it,
I get a message (something to this effect): only packages with major number
<=3 can be handled by this version of RPM.
Now, I also download the latest RPM rpm (funny), and I get the same message
when trying to install that. Did they actually make the updated RPM in a
form that the previous version couldn't update? What am I missing here.
Thanks,
Tim

There is a program I used to use in my ppp days, which
gives the modem serial interrupt the highest priority.
It's called irqtune -

Nothing happened? As in you got the "Lilo" prompt when re-booting after
running fdisk /mbr? fdisk /mbr does not output anything to the screen if
I recall correctly, it just re-writes the boot record. Is it possible that
you have more than one bootable partition? I'm not sure how to handle those
situations with dos fdisk, if it's even possible.

No thanks to your snide, arrogant, and unbelievably rude reply, I managed to
find a solution. It wasn't that I "can't read the instructions", as you so
smugly implied - it's that the answer to my problem wasn't in the
instructions to begin with.
If you cannot give constructive comments to someone who was as obviously
frustrated as I was, you should keep your fat mouth shut. There are those of
us who, amazingly enough, are not acquainted with GRUB, nor Linux, nor the
commands used by them. Rather than responding with helpful advice, you chose
to look down your nose. So be it. I've seen your "superiority" displayed
here. I'm not impressed.
It's people like you, with your attendant attitudes, that make so many of us
steer clear of Linux. I have been willing to experiment, but now it will be
a cold day in Hell before I allow this trash back on my system. Chalk up
another victory for the elite.
To those of you who did offer me help when previously asked, thank you. To
you, Peter - go to Hell.

With 256Mb physical ram, I don't see any good reason to use more than 8-16Mb

The easiest way. Restart the machine. (spare the flamez pleaze, d00dz!) At the
Lilo prompt enter "linux 3". That will boot Linux into console mode. You can't
configure X while it is running. Login and enter either one these two commands:
"XF86Setup" "Xconfigurator"
The commands are CaSe SeNsItIvE. Once configured, enter "startx" to verify it.
If per-chance it gets totally hosed, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace will kill the X server,
and drop you to the command prompt to try again.
By the way, proper Usenet netiquette is to post your replies "underneath"
what you are replying to. Thanks.

: This may be a stupid question, but did you disable Plug and Play on the NIC?
Not stupid -- And in the system BIOS?

During installation, configure Linux to boot from a floppy, instead of the
hard drive.

Try "fdisk/mbr" from DOS prompt of DOS boot diskette. You have to
purge LILO from the Master Boot Record. Also, use fdisk to make sure
"C:" primary partition is Active primary partition.
