Subject: "Respawning too fast" - ? hardware or software problem??
I have a minimal version of Debian running on a Mitsubishi Amity Laptop.
Connects with PCMCIA cards to 1) an external EXP R/W CDROM, and 2) a Viking
modem. I'm having a couple of problems that may be related: 1) I can get pppd
to dial, but not do much else; 2) minicom doesn't seem to respond in expected
way, eg after "minicom -c on" I can't get live cursor working on terminal to
issue commands; and 3) lots of medium error messages when trying to download
programs from CDROM.
Also, I keep getting interrupted with the following error message:
INIT: ID "S" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.
In spite of this, I can mount and download from CDROM, but I would like to get
rid of this bothersome interruption screen. Among error messages that flash by
too fast to read on screen is something about sbin/getty. Is this binary
running in background and causing problems with both CDROM and modem??
Help for newbie will be appreciated.

The file /etc/lilo.conf is the configuration file for Lilo. To use the
lba32 keyword, you simply insert it in /etc/lilo.conf. For example,
here's the beginning of mine:
boot=/dev/hdc3
root=/dev/hdc3
lba32
install=/boot/boot.b
......
When you do this manually, the command 'lilo' has to be run as root for
any change to /etc/lilo.conf to take effect. I'm not familiar with the
specifics of how the SUSE installation handles Lilo, so that's about as
far as I can take it.

Subject: Mounting cdrom after upgrade to 2.4.0-pre11
Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 20:36:10 GMT
Hey all, I hope someone can help me.
I had a relatively fresh Slackware 7.1 install (kernel 2.2.16) and everything
was/is fine with it but to play with the new DRI XFree86 stuff I decided to
upgrade to a 2.4-pre kernel. The upgrade was relatively painless save one
thing. Now when I go to mount my cdrom it seems to mount successfully but when
I cd to the directory and do a list I see no files. I've read the ide-cd file
in the kernel distribution and I did the cat /dev/cdrom | od | more and got
reams of output, so it seems I'm talking to the cdrom okay (that, and workbone
behaves just as well as ever) but I can't get at the filesystems. Is there a
known problem with IDE ATAPI cdroms on 2.4.0pre11? I tried both home-burned
data cds and store-bought shrink-wrapped ones with no changes, but all mount
fine if I boot back to 2.2.16.
Any help is really appreciated.
Thanks,
-Joe.

Or look in the book. The Viewsonic monitors that I bought a

came with the monitors.
They also had this information on their web site.

I just found a 19" Viewsonic on sale at Walmart for $275.00. Beautiful
monitor, great resolution, .26 dpi, flat screen. Can't go wrong with a
Viewsonic. There are tons of great monitors out there...I think I
recently read that Princeton was top shelf right now. Check out
Computer Shopper or something like that and you should be able to find
some great prices! Also watch for pre-Christmas sales as well.
Good luck!

Dave,
I was frustated with @Home in Linux for a long time too. Here is
what worked for me:
Set up eth0 interface to use dhcp and have hostname "localhost" and
domain name "localdomain" Believe it or not the dhcp client (dhcpcd)
fills in all that stuff in for you. After booting (it will probably
hang on bringing up eth0 interface. Just let it, and wait for it),
from the command line type:
dhcpcd -h c202198-a
This should connect you to the internet. To automate the process,
and avoid the long hang on bringing up eth0 on bootup, replace the
call to "pump" in your ifup file (i think it's /etc/ifup) with a call
to dhcpcd -h c202198-a. This should connect you on bootup.
By the way if you have more than one network card, you have to
specify which interface you want dhcpcd to use. I'm not sure how to do
this but it consists of some switch which you can find by looking up
help on dhcpcd. Hope this helps. Let me know if it works.

Subject: devfs and a cdrom module
Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 22:57:07 -0500
Hi,
I use devfs and hve my cdrom driver compiled as a module.
If I insert the module (ide-cd.o and cdrom.o) manually (with modprobe)
all the device entries (/dev/ide1/cd, /dev/cdroms/cdrom0, /dev/hdd etc...)
are inserted properly and I can mount my cdrom in a normal way.
But I think it should be possible that the modules are loaded automatically
when I do the mount command; it did work before devfs...
I did look in the FAQ and the READMEs but couldn`t find a solution.
Could someone tell me the correct entries in /etc/devfsd.conf, /etc/modules.conf
and /etc/modules.conf?
Thx

Hi , I have Linux mandrak 7.0 installed on my PC. Yestoday, I
accidentally changed the configuration file (XF86Setup), and afterward,
I can not start the X server. The os constantly tries to start the
server, and left the screen blank most of the time. Is there any fix for
it? I guess that I may have to use the flopy boot disk to start the os
or reinstall the os, but something suprizing happened after I tried to
put the flopy into the drive: lilo ignores the flopy disk and still
tries to start the os from the hard drive(I am sure the flopy drive is
woring properly) ! I guess that I may need to change the CMOS settings,
so I rebooted the machine and hitted the DEL key to invoke the CMOS
setup, I got another surprise: I can not access the CMOS setup screen!
the computer askes me to "Please enter current password:"!
I have never setup any password using the option of the setup superuser
password in the CMOS, I had no trouble before in accessing the CMOS
setup. What had happed here? What should I do to enable the CMOS access
and rescue my linux os? Please help!

Date: Sun, 26 Nov 2000 22:51:58 GMT
I have a triple boot machine: (i) Win98, (ii) RH6.2 with the RH6.2
stock kernel (2.2.14-5.0) and (iii) kernel 2.4.0-test11. I cannot seem
to get modules to work for the 2.4.0-test11 kernel. I go through the
normal kernel upgrade routine*, having selected "m" for a number of
sound-related items (I am trying to get sb-compatible sound working
under 2.4.0-test11, as it does under 2.2.14), and while the module files
properly show up in /lib/modules/2.4.0-test11/kernel/drivers/sound/,
depmod creates an empty /lib/modules/2.4.0-test11/modules.dep file.
Does anyone have any idea what may be going wrong and, in general, how
to set up modules for systems with several different versions of the
kernel? The RH6.2 creates a file named /boot/System.map that (out of
the box) is a symlink that points to /boot/System.map-2.2.14-5.0 -- in a
multi-kernel system, what should this file be doing, if anything? Any
suggestions would be much appreciated.

If Mandrake 7.0 is sufficiently similar to Mandrake 7.2 (which
I have), try to boot with
linux 3
when at the Lilo prompt. That should put you in runlevel 3 which
does not automatically start X.
Then you can fix XF86Config.

My Motherboard has a jumper that resets the BIOS password.
If yours does not have such a thing, you have to remove the battery
from the BIOS for a few seconds to reset the BIOS.
