Due to the specific problem I have with my scsi hd or controller, I was
advised to compile my own kernel....
But, how can I do this without there eing any OS on the PC I am talking
about, or rather, can I do so?
Would I have to try something like arranging the compile on another PC and
burning it onto a CD-RW?
thanks in advance!

There are two issues you must concern yourself with when setting up DSL
or cable modem access in Linux:
1) The modem type -- internal, external Ethernet, and external USB are
the three major types. Of these, external Ethernet is the only one
that's guaranteed to work. I know of one internal DSL modem with
Linux drivers, and I've heard of work underway or beta drivers for
other internal and USB modems, but mostly these are worthless.
Fortunately, you can usually trade in or otherwise replace such a
modem, if you're willing to pay the price (perhaps $100 or so on
eBay -- but you may be able to turn around and sell what you've got
for close to that).
2) The IP address assignment method -- static IP addresses and DHCP pose
no problems and should be handled fine. (There are occasional
glitches with some DHCP clients, though.) PPPoE is the latest craze
in DSL, and is trickier, but still do-able. Check
http://www.rodsbooks.com/network/network-dsl.html for a list of
several Linux PPPoE implementations. There's also PPPoA, which is
rarer but seems to be growing in popularity. I don't know what's
required to get that working.
Once you've figured out what your ISP needs for these things, you can
grab any necessary hardware or software and go at it. If you still have
problems, post with more details.

The monitor can be the problem if all you see is blackness...
The same thing happens with Mandrake 7.1 and a Sony
Multiscan 220GS. The frequency rates don't match.
I changed to another monitor without changing my install
an all was well in whoville...

"Safe" is a relative term in this context. PM *USUALLY* works without
damaging drives. A backup/repartition/restore operation *USUALLY* loses
no data, if done properly. Neither is 100% safe. Heck, leaving your
computer alone isn't 100% safe -- the hard drive could fail, the system
could be fried by a lightning strike, the whole thing could be hit by a
meteor, etc.
In practice, it's probably best to back up to tape (you *DO* have that
capability, right?) and then use PM or one of the open source ext2fs
resizers. Alternatively, you could back up to tape TWICE, re-partition,
and restore. I have no hard statistics on the matter, but based on my
own experiences with the reliability of PM and tape backups, I'd say
these two options are similar in terms of safety.

I have just installed RH 6.2, and am having difficulties with email. I
have tried using pigmy (gnome) and kmail (kde) but cannot get
attachments to save properly. In fact when multiple attachments are sent
in an email, saving the file saves all the attachments in one file. Any
help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I'm in the process of setting up a plip link between my desktop and
laptop. Have got to the point where I can load the plip modules and ppp
modules on both machines. However the PLIP-HOWTO says that you need to
run the following command before setting up the link.
route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0
or
route add -net 192.168.0.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev plip0
both of which give me the "network is down" error and the route is not
added.
doing ifconfig plip0 Laptop pointopoint Desktop up
and vice-versa on the other machine seems to bring up the link but the
netmask is 255.255.255.255 and I cannot ping either machine.
Any ideas?

First off, I'm a moderate newbie. I'm copying data from CD's to my new
hard drive. Both the CDROM (40X) and HD are IDE.
The copying process is taking up
a lot of resources because my mouse keeps 'sticking'.
Any ideas on improving the efficiency of the copy process?
This also has me thinking of ways of tweaking the system to improve
performance in general. Any 'standard' tricks for improving system
operation? Should I add another swap file on the new drive?
TIA,
Dave

Haven't tried to get into it from Enlightenment yet, but if you switch
to KDE, go to Start Menu, Configuration, Other, DrakeConf, UserDrake,
User Configuration Manager, Actions, and then UserAutoLogin, you should
be able to get it changed back.

Use X resources; 'man xterm', 'man X', and 'man xrdb' will probably be
helpful here. Edit your ~/.Xresources (or possibly ~/.Xdefaults) file,
and add a line like 'XTerm*color4: steel blue', then 'xrdb -merge
~/.Xresources' or whatever. color4 corresponds to non-bold blue; color12
is bold blue. You can find a list of colour names in
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/rgb.txt, or try the 'xcolorsel' tool.
>By the way there's no icewm man page on mandrake 7.2.
The man page in Debian was written for Debian, apparently. Perhaps
Mandrake should import it. Either way, file a bug with Mandrake.

Get netscape six, it uses the mozilla engine and seems to be more stable
than M18. Atleast for me... Only problems I had was installing, took
about 15 tries, but finally got it. Mainly stalling on download and
segfaults during install... I recommend, if you try, deleting the
netscape folder it installs in everytime it crashes, to insure no other
corruption...

Subject: QT 1.4 (headers and libraries) not found?
Date: Fri, 1 Dec 2000 18:29:25 +0100
Hi there,
I am new to the community so I hope you are able to help me solve some
problems.I have standard installed the "Download Edition" of Corel Linux 2.0
and my first problem was Linux couldn't handle my soundcard (SB Live!) on
PCI on a BP6.
In Control Center it displayed a SB 128 but gave an error when running an
MP3-player and when I run 'sndconfig' It cannot find any soundcard. So I
went to 'opensource.soundblaster.com' and learned about the ALSA project and
downloaded the drivers.
In the meanwhile I had to recompile the kernel because of SMP-support and
had read about running the drivers as a module so I configured the system to
be able to load modules and the soundsystem as modular without any choice of
soundcard (only OSS Y).
In order to decompress the driver I had to run a bzip2 decompressor so I
downloaded 'KARCHIVEUR-0.87'. When I ran ./configure it produces an error
which indicates it cannot find the QT 1.4 (headers and libraries). This I
thought strange because it was still the original setup (non-SMP). In
SMP-mode it was the same. The QT 1.4 headers and libraries seem to be placed
into /usr/lib/qt14 allright.
When trying to install QT 2.2 from a CD-rom I bought which also contains
KDE2 it said "unknown compat mode menu-2 (only know of menu-1.........) and
aborted.
- Should I install KDE2 first?
- Should I alter anything in my BIOS to get the SB Live to work?
- How do I get the system to recognize the QT 1.4? or
- How can I install QT 2.2?
As you may notice from this message I am trying very hard to get Linux to
work. I hope you can help me with this effort because I am sick of the
'speed' of W2K.

Hi,
I am running Red Hat version 6 with Gnome and Enlightenment, and I am
using an ensoniq 1371 chipset soundcard. With sound enabled in Gnome and
Enlightenment, the sound works fine for the Root user. However, when
logging in with any user accounts, I get an Esound error message when I
try to enable sounds in Enlightenment. I figure this is probably a
problem with permissions (that's why I didn't post this in hardware), but
I don't know what to check. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
I know this won't help a lot, but I did exactly what you are about to do
( or might already have done by the time I'm writing) a few months ago,
and the "beloved" winbug crached my machine entirely , that is the whole
HD was erased, nothing left. I did the same w/ W2k, hoping it would
perform better, but NO. Just about the same result.
so advice : BACK UP, on a cd burner or anything alike (1.44Mb diskettes
is still better than nothing...)
Good luck (and thank M$)

Hello,
you mean the concerned PC is unable to boot ? If there is no OS at all,
just install any distro, usually most standard hardware is basically
supported, so it should at least boot, then you can think of recompiling
the kernel to fit your needs. But I think that copying a kernel on an
OS-less machine may be a bit tricky...

If this is true for all users
/etc/sysconfig/desktop
replace the
Enlightenment
with
KDE
If it is just for you, look for a config file in your own home directory
called .xsession or .Xclient
On the other hand, if you are refering to its action from the xdm or kdm
or gdm logon, I am not sure how that is handled.

My idea about that is : have you checked the small (but very efficient)
utility called 'hdparm'. It makes it possible to use DMA, and some other
improvements for your HD and CD and should solve your problem. check
'man hdparm' for further help on it, and once you have good params, put
them in your startup scripts.
Be careful with hdparm which can cause a lot of harm if used
incorrectly.
