Goal:
To perform an NFS Kickstart using DHCP. More specifically, to
only use a network capable kernel to boot the target install machine
and to grab the ks.cfg and Linux installation tree from a server.
Setup:
o I created a boot disk using bootnet.img
o At the boot prompt, I am typing: linux ks
o I can see that it is grabing the Kickstart file from the server (so
at this point, the DHCP is working)
o I can also see that it is mounting the Linux installation tree from
the server
o Then, I am getting the following messages:
On the F1 screen:
failed to read /modules/module-info
install exited abnormally
sending termination signals...done
sending kill signals...done
disabling swap...
unmounting filesystems...
/mnt/source
/tmp/nfskd
/dev/ptsxt
/proc
you may safely reboot your system
On the F3 screen:
getting ready to spawn shell now
cannot open shell - /bin/sh doesn't exist
It almost sounds like the chroot'ed environment is not being set
properly when the ramdisk (initrd.img) is being mounted. Just a
guess.
Any suggestions???

lpt1 ia a parallel or printer port 25pin female.
you should have two serial or com ports. com1 and com2.
if your external is connected to com1 and your internal is at com1 then
ttyS01 will not
find the external because the winmodem is occuping that port.
try using com2. com1 should be the 9pin male while com2 is the 25pin male.

Sir:
Please lower case your next and all following posts. OS/2 does not
normally have drivers on the main board CD for sound, exceptions do
exist. You will need to go to the manufacturer's web site and get the
OS/2 audio drivers. Linux drivers are available there also.

Subject: why can't one boot from /dev/hdb?

Why can't one boot from /dev/hdb? [grub, or lilo]
My bios (01/22/98 Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG SiS-5598-<SP97_V>C-00)
gives my choices of boot drives "A: C: D: E: F:, cdrom, zip" etc. (meaning fd0,
hda, hdb...)
(note that these are just bios simple names, not actual windows drives.)
I have windows on hda, and indeed when I put a second
windows drive on hdb, and tell bios to boot from it,
it works, and windows sees it as the primary ("C:") drive and what was on hda
now
is the "D:" drive. I remember in the past cautiously unplugging hda where
windows lives
before installing Mandrake on hdb. When I plugged it back in again indeed I
could tell bios to
boot from hdb and it worked. But the grub and lilo configurations files
produced by the Mandrake
installations scripts look the same whether I created them with hda plugged or
not. Yes, I'm aware I must run /sbin/lilo each time, thanks.
Ok, here's what I'm trying to do: Win98 totally occupying hda, don't mess with
its original
MBR. Linux (Mandrake 7.2) totally occupying hdb. I then want to tell bios to
boot from hdb,
and enter the grub or lilo choice menu. I have been successful in installing
grub onto a floppy; /boot/grub/menu.lst reads:
timeout 5
i18n (hd1,0)/boot/grub/messages
keytable (hd1,0)/boot/us.klt
altconfigfile (hd1,0)/boot/grub/menu.once
default 0
title linux
kernel (hd1,0)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hdb1 hdc=ide-scsi
initrd (hd1,0)/boot/initrd.img
title windows
root (hd0,0)
map (0x81) (0x80)
map (0x80) (0x81)
makeactive
chainloader +1
however I note to boot into windows from the floppy I must edit out map (0x81)
(0x80)
map (0x80) (0x81) in boot time grub interface.
For you lilo fans, this is:
boot=/dev/fd0
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
vga=normal
default=linux
keytable=/boot/us.klt
prompt
timeout=50
message=/boot/message
menu-scheme=wb:bw:wb:bw
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=linux
root=/dev/hdb1
initrd=/boot/initrd.img
append=" hdc=ide-scsi"
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label=windows
table=/dev/hda
map-drive=0x80
to=0x81
map-drive=0x81
to=0x80
Which again I have to remove the map-drive stuff to boot to windows from the
floppy.
This indicates that when the Mandrake 7.2 install script created my lilo.conf
and menu.lst,
it make some over-cautious assumptions on the intelligence of my bios regarding
drive mapping?
Anyways, I currently am booting to hda [windows] or hdb [linux] from the floppy.
I wish to be booting to hda [windows] or hdb [linux] from hdb.
Sure I've heard that if I install on /dev/hda all will be OK and if I'm
unhappy all I have to do is dos' fdisk /mbr to restore the Master Boot Record,
but I thought there must be a way to achieve my goal without touching anything
on hda. Thanks for answers if any.

Seems to be a common thing anymore. My trouble started late in August and
it's been getting worse and worsr all the time. Sometimes it takes three
or more tries to connect to an ISP, and that many or more times to connect
to a mail server. Times are getting rougher all the time.

No.
You could probably do with a long session with man lilo.conf. There are
several concepts to absorb, it may take a while.
My summary:
each section starts with image =
image tells what kernel to load, for example with your lilo.conf responding
to the lilo boot prompt with either slack or slack2 will use the the same
kernel
label tells what you will type at the lilo boot prompt to ask for that
section
root tells what partition will be mounted as the root partion, again with
your lilo.conf slack will have /dev/hda3 as root slack2 will have /dev/hdb1
as root
You can reference the kernel in the image= line either by /dev/????/vmlinuz
or by the location as known in the current session i.e.
/mnt/something/vmlinuz. The first is less ambiguous. This allows the kernel
to reside on any partition.
Easy screw ups I have done:
Don't keep more that one copy of lilo.conf (one on each partition) because
you can forget which one was used when you ran lilo.
Do keep a backup of lilo.conf so you can step back to where you used to be.

Simply copy the old .config into the new kernel's directory, then configure the
new kernel, make etc, then reboot.
Keep a copy of your old kernel until you know the new one is working alright.

You're going to kick yourself for this one. There is a MUCH simpler way.
When you install Mandrake (or Corel, or whatever), do the customized
install and tell it not to install LILO or any other bootloader. Then set
up Windows' config.sys to give you a customized boot menu. When you want
linux, it just fires up a program called loadlin.exe. Works great. That's
assuming you don't want to hose your mbr again.
But since you are switching to Mandrake, you'd probably like Grub. Grub
will do the same thing for you (customized boot menu) automatically. That
is, if you have Windows installed FIRST, Mandrake will recognize this and
give you a custom boot menu (GRUB) when you install it. It works great.
It DOES overwrite your mbr, but it replaces it with a custom boot menu, so
you don't lose windows. I think you'd like it. You can specify a default
OS and time delay so that (if you want) Grub will automatically load
windows after X seconds, unless you tell it to boot linux. Or, the other
way around . . . your choice. But if you really don't want to mess with
the mbr, directions follow. -Dave
http://www.linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/mini/Loadlin+Win95.html
(pay close attention to section 6.2)
PS: You will find that your second hard disk is actually HDC (not HDB)
