I too have a BEE6 and cannot get linux-2.4.0-test10 to shut it down (or
indeed any 2.3.99/2.4.0-test kernel).

Something like that. What is your driver? You just want the driver to
be loaded when the scsi system is launched. I'd go for
alias block-major-8 blah rather than what you have, just in case
the modprobe you use doesn't know what "scsi" is supposed to mean.
> .conf, but how do I add the necessary i/o and irq parameters? It also
In an options line for your driver. Read the driver code (or the
BootPrompt-HOWTO) to see what they might be. A rough guess would be
options blah irq=11 io=0xca00, but that's for you to check and us
to nod at.

Eh? There should be a prepared script for modules you want to launch
like that. Probably rc.modules.

Eh? It's impossible. You can't pass params to a thing that isn't there!
Your kernel is compiled without the driver.

It's up to the HP what it chooses to do. Hardware compression is just
that.

Hello,
After upgrading to RedHat 7.0 I noticed that telnet attempts into my
system are now refused. Connections to the web server running on my
machine are also refused. However, ftp connections work
fine. Everything used to work fine under 6.2. I believe that RH 7.0 is
using xinetd whereas RH 6.2 was using inetd. A quick examination of
the xinetd.conf files did not reveal a problem. Is there some
configuration file which has changed? What do I need to reset?
Thanks in advance.

Subject: KFM Error
Date: Wed, 6 Dec 2000 15:09:56 -0500 (EST)
My FDD crapped out just before I installed Mandrake 7.1, so I could not
do the boot disc then, during the install.
My new FDD came today. I had a useless FD {from AOL 8-)} which I
decided to use for my boot disc. I inserted this FD and tried to list
the directory. No problem.
Then using KDE went in under the root password and created the boot
disc. No problems.
After finishing creation of the boot disc I wanted to look at its
directory. Problem.
I get this message:
KFM Error
! Could not list directory contents
file/mnt/floppy/
This is probably an obvious error on my part 'cause I'm new to this.
All help/hints appreciated.
Thanks.

Thanks for the message. I actually made the root partion 500MB smaller than
it was before. Is that significant? Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to run
fsck on the root partition (since you can't umount it), although I thought
fsck was run on boot anyway? It detects no errors at that time.

Only my own experiences. ;-)
I have swapped disks out of a 486ers with a RH 5.1 and also with a RH
6.1 and have done it with Win95 & Win98 with no major difficulties to
an Intel Pentium 233. Main thing is the bios settings on the new MB for
your drives. Depending how your old system was set up. LBA, large,
normal, etc.
Swap up to an AMD K-6 2/550 killed Win95 for me, but I'd been warned
about that previously so no big deal.
The kernel compilation from the i386 arch should be okay, but you will
probably want to recompile or upgrade anyway for maximum performance.
I know Mandrake, or at least my Mandrake 7.2 is maximized for i586, but
I haven't tried a disk swap with it yet.
As I said, the main thing on getting it to boot up and run is going to
make sure all your bios settings jive with the previous setup.
Good luck.

If your moving from a PCI based hard disk host controller, to another, there
should not be any problems with the migration. The only exception to this is
you need to check and make sure the new machine has the same settings for
the hardware. Usually this is not a problem as most of them use LBA mode but
some folks tune them differently and as such, those settings have to move
with the hard drive or things won't work.

You do not mention what type of modem you have. Internal PCI?
Perhaps I should explain that changing the "/dev/modem" link will not
configure your modem. All it accomplishes is that a program that has
been told the the modem is "/dev/modem" is then aware of which "ttyS?"
device that the modem is actually assigned to.
Setserial, on the other hand, assigns serial drivers (ttyS?) to
hardware.
Have you somehow determined that you modem (hardware) has been assigned
to ttyS4? Or, if your modem has been assigned to any "ttyS?"?
Be a little more specific.

Ok, I read the manuals, surfed the web etc, and either I'm brain dead, which
is possible, or I have no idea what they are babbling about. I can start an
x proggie from a term window in lets say gnome with lets say netcfg &.
However when I try that from a command line, I get no display, tcl, python
errors. Most frustrating. I use to be able to do that from a command line, x
would start, and then the proggie would start. Now nadda. Ideas, ridicule,
and suggestions welcome!

I am guessing that you have dial up ISP service, and people are sending
you mail at your local mail address. This, basically doesn't work. The
"Relaying denied" is not coming from your system, it is coming from a
server (MLNOVPS0142.nacio.com) that can't find your system because it
doesn't have your address on a DNS somewhere.
They need to use the e-mail address assigned to you by the ISP. Then it
will get to your system. You could probably configure Sendmail to then
forward it to you local mail address, but what is the point. Just set
up your e-mail program correctly and it should work.
Then again, I have a bad cold and could be totally wrong about all of
this.

What do I keep missing. Many people have posted their problems using
the ISO images to reinstall their system when they already have one
running.
Why didn't you just down load the individual files you needed to up
grade your system. You do have a system running -- you were able to
down load the ISO images.

I have a problem where after installing some new software from RPMs
(SANE software for scanners), my Gnome desktop ground to a halt (not the
1st time). When I restarted X windows with <Cntl><Alt><Backspace>,
suddently the window manager (Enlightenment) didn't work anymore, so
what GUI programs I can load aren't manageable on the screen anymore.
I've looked around at the Gnome files, the only file that seems to make
some sense to me is the .gnomerc-errors file.
"Gdk-WARNING: locale not supported by C library."
"Root window clicks will not work as no GNOME-compliant window manager
could be found."
Now, I'm not very good on Linux, but is GDK anything to do with the
GTK libraries??
Something is not configured, or has been overwritten here. How can
I try to verify the Gnome installation to find out what's wrong???
I can load the Gnome RPM package, but can also use the command line to
find the info out .
Any ideas???
