Thank you, Michael.

I did manually do the insmod also.

Now it seems a problem from the source 2.2.16-3 distributed by Redhat. I
found this problem when at the same time I was struggling to aplly patch and
reconfigure kernel to support Microsoft's VPN client masquerade (in PPTP).
Again, I followed all instructions, it just didn't work. Then I simply
switched to source 2.2.17 from www.kernel.org, applied the patch and
reconfigure the kernel exactly the same way like I did for 2.2.16-3, both
problems went away. I am going to try the same approach for my another task.
This one requires to apply patch and recompile the kernel to support a
sangoma WAN card. Again I am using RH 2.2.16-3 (NOTE: this version is the
recommended update to RH 6.2's 2.2.14-5.0), and again after following all
steps, it just didn't work. If simply switching to original 2.2.17 will
solve this problem, I would suggest people don't use 2.2.16-3 source for
kernel recompiling.

I think that's the one he's talking about, too. I have an Amptron

Is this to say that I can also tweak the lilo.conf to get my HPT366 and
HPT370 controllers able to allow Linux 7 to see the disks? As you are
aware, I cannot install Linux (any version or vendor) until I do something
so that Linux will see the drives. (getting: No drives found)

My understanding is that you did something to enable Linux to see the disks,
so it installed. You did not have to bebuild the kernel because this method
worked out for you.

What specifically did you do to tweak the lilo.conf?

FYI: I'm a Unix application developer who is struggling to get Linux 7 up on
any one of the 6 ABit/Highpoint machines...installation does not complete-
No drives found.

Any clues?

Also, take a look at /etc/logrotate.d

it has a file called syslog which lists files that get rotated weekly
(depending on your /etc/logroate.conf global directive)

I have a "winmodem" at the moment, and as many know, they are difficult
if not (well, for me at least) impossible to make work with Linux. Of
the modems that work well with Linux, which ones are the best to
purchase?

One note, the modem must work well under both Win98SE and Linux (2.2.14)
since I dual boot.

Thanks!

Your posting was simply plain wrong. I did not want to intimidate you,
but posting grossly misleading statements won't help at all.
Instead, the result will be more misinformation to be spread..

True enough. However, there's more than enough information
available both in the kernel documentation as well as using
www.deja.com/home_ps.shtml .

Why not? There's nothing magical about IRQ numbers. Some of them
are per default used by standard components, that's right. A classical
example would be the serial ports, which default to using IRQ 4 (ttyS0)
and IRQ 3 (ttyS1), but you could change this in your BIOS or disable
the port(s) altogether, if your BIOS doesn't offer this option and you'd
urgently need to free up an IRQ for some add-on device.
As far as the parallel port is concerned: You can use IRQ 7 for
whatever you want. Even for printing :-) if you want to (use "tunelp").

Coupla things:
1.  Is c++/g++ installed?  Type "c++ --version".
2. If so, you can override the C++ variable, either by modifying the
makefile, or by setting "C++" in your environment to "c++" or "g++".

You need to run "make" from the directory containing the kernel source code
(possibly /usr/src/linux).

You need to upgrade to XFree86 4.0, that can turn off the backlight.
But, if you're a RedHat user, don't upgrade to RedHat 7.0 for
it (when it turns off the backlight, the machine hangs). Either
compile it yourself, or find someone else who has.

hi

i currently use gnome+enlightenment. until recently, i ran
'gnome-session' as my session manager, but due to a conflict with
another program, i now run enlightenment as my session manager, and i've
set 'panel' and 'gmc' to load automatically when enlightenment starts
up.

A problem arises when shutting down enlightenment. Merely logging out of
enlightenment terminates gmc and panel by breaking the X connection to
these applications ie. panel and gmc are not shut down properly. I've
found that killing gmc with SIGTERM works. however, i cant do the same
with panel since apparently, every applet needs to be shutdown first.
I've written a script to identify all the currently used applets, but
when i try to shut them down, a message pops up on the screen asking if
i want to reload the applet. Hence, i'm unable to successfully shut down
panel.

Is there any other way of properly shutting down panel? I hate having to
improperly terminate it everytime i log out of X.

thanks

This is about as current as "SMP doesn't work." Some drivers share irq

I have a 3Com USRobotics 56K voice/fax modem and it works without fault under both OS.
Under linux it uses the generic modem driver so perhaps if a specific driver could be
obtained it might perform better.

There *may* be issues with multiple PCI bridges, etc, slot order,
things like that. You may gain insight from /proc/pci on this.

The line from the immutable past to the desired future is useful to

going, just how to get where you want to go.

I installed the DNS server when installing RH7.0 I'm trying to use
Linuxconf. to configure it, but I cannot get it to show up under
Networking/Server tasks. I have enabled everything under the Linuxconf
modules but still no luck. Any information on how to get this to show up
would be appreciated.

Subject: APM troubles on an IBM TP600E with Mandrake 7.2
From: Alasdair McAndrew <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Date: 12 Dec 2000 10:50:29 +1100

Hi there,

I've just replaced a rather antiquated slackware distribution on my
laptop (IBM ThinkPad 600E) with Mandrake 7.2. The installation went
extremely smoothly, and everything works -- even sound.

However, when I attempt to standby or suspend (apm -s, or apm -S), the
machine goes to sleep -- but won't wake up. That is to say, I get the
screen as it was, but both mouse and keyboard are frozen, and I can't
do anything except a hard reboot. Even if I logout out from X to a
bare console, the same trouble occurs.

This isn't a hardware problem, as everything worked fine before. So
it must be a bug either in:

 - the kernel (2.2.17-12)
 - in apmd (3.0)
 - in Mandrake's implementation of these.

Does anybody have any useful suggestions here? I don't really want to
have to shutdown and reboot the laptop every time I need to transport
it (say from office to lecture theatre).

I've spent some time trawling the Web for useful information, but so
far have found nothing. So any advice would be most welcome!

cheers,
        Alasdair McAndrew

Any "hardware" ISA or external modem should work well.

I'm using an old US Robotics 33.6 ISA FAX modem that has been
recently flash upgraded to 56K V.90. It works with W98 and SE, as
well as Mandrake Linux 7.0 in both a P 133, 64MB machine and an AMD
K6-2 300MHz, 128MB one.
