Subject: HELP - renamed machine and now it won't start
Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 09:00:50 GMT
I renamed my Caldera Open Linux 2.3 box, and now it won't start. I did it
from KDE, and did the immediate reboot it recommended, and now it hangs on
the
"cleaning up temporary space" part of the graphical boot.
I can boot "linux single," entering the root password at the prompt, and I
get two "host name lookup failure" errors before getting a prompt, which is
root@(none) presumably because it doesn't start the network, but possibly
because of the name change. (Obviously, I don't KNOW what the issue is.)
There are 3 IP addresses configured for this box, on one NIC (eth0, eth0:0,
and eth0:1).
I even found instructions on how to remount /dev/hda1 as rw so I can change
files. I tried to:
1) edit /etc/hosts back to the previous name, to no avail
2) edit /etc/sysconfig/network, changing HOSTNAME= to reflect the previous
name, also to no avail.
I don't want to reformat and re-install, as there is data on the box I would
have a hard time replacing. I don't think it will fit on a floppy, either,
and I can't connect to any other boxes to copy it because it won't boot
properly - the network is dead when I boot into linux single mode.
I have searched the Caldera knowledge base (normally a useless resource for
me but it seems to be getting a little better lately) and Deja News, looking
for things like "boot hang" and the place where it stops ("cleaning up
temporary space") and not finding anything useful.
Let me be clear: this machine was working fine, it was installed and
rebooted numerous times and this is not an issue of the disk size or LILO or
anything like that. The problem showed up after I changed the host name, so
I'm about 98% sure that is the source of the problem.
But, being 98% sure doesn't help me fix it, and I could be wrong about what
caused it in the first place. I'm pretty much a newbie here [probably
obvious]. I am normally competent but apparently dangerous enough to do
myself in!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
-Frank

syslogd is doing it. The -m option changes the mark interval.

Hi,
I'm not exactly a newbie because I've been using Unix, then linux
for over 10
years now, but I'm really a "user" of Linux : by that I mean that the
systems
I've used so far were installed and administrated by other people ; I'm
not a
developper. I use Linux because I need to use softwares that hardly
exist under
other OSs. So as far as hardware configuration is concerned,
I'm more of a dummy than a comp-freak. Well, enough talking. I've got 2
questions.
In case : I use RedHat 7.0 and KDE...
1) Does anyone know how to make a Canon BJC 6200 work under Linux ?
I've heard about something called stp, which sounds like a driver. Where
can
I retrieve that and how can I install it on my machine ?
Nota : I don't care about complicated image processing. All I need is to
be
able to print postscript files in b/w. So I wouldn't need "full
compatibility"...
2) My cable company installed an ISA-ethernet card called SN2000
(SN stands for "Simple Net") in my computer. But I can't connect to the
internet under Linux. I might have a driver / module pb. The name SN2000
suggests the card is a clone of ISA-NE2000, so I filled in "ne" on the
"module" line
in linuxconf. I'm not sure I'm giving the right format for I/O and IRQ
(I write 0240 and 09 : should I write io=0240 or io=0240-025F (this is
the
range I found under Windows ?) )
I also have to say I can't ask my cable company for advice
because when I did they told
me that "we don't know", "you had better use windows", "you know no one
uses linux any more" and worse crap...
Hope someone out there can help. Thanx in advance.

Subject: Update KDE rpm - Confusion with dependencies in YaST
Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 11:50:12 +0100
Hi everybody,
I upgraded by SuSE 7.0 linux installation to KDE 2.0.1 with rpm-archives I
downloaded. I did that in YaST with the 'Install packages' option. The
rpm's were specifically for SuSE 7.0. Now, YaST complains about missing
packages everytime I install something new from the distribution CD
(because it thinks it needs the old (KDE 2.0.0 packages).
How do I have to update to avoid this 'confusion'?
Thank you for your answer

Hi,
I got messages like these on my CDROM drives. I think(!), you should disable
automatic DMA in your kernel if possible. After that, these messages
disappeared in my box, but this will only be a solution if your drive is
not a DMA-one. This would mean, your drive is already quite old (4 years I
guess at least).

On http://www.highpoint-tech.com/370drivers.htm you can download the latest
(i assume the fastest as well) drivers. Unfortunately (for me) they don't
support RAID.

Do you have an Highpoint 366 (or 370) controller? If so, look at the
following message in this newsgroup:
Re: HPT370 and RH7.0 instead of installing a new dev. kernel, you could also
use the patch from Highpoints site:
http://www.highpoint-tech.com/370drivers.htm or

Have you checked your print daemon logs? When the print jobs don't get
printed, do you get any response from 'lprm' to possibly dequeue the
jobs?
I assume you have 'GROUP=<same_GROUP_name_as_smb_server>' in smb.conf>?
I am using RH7 at the moment, so with RH's control panel print tool, I
have almost never had a problem configuring local or smb printers. I
once even copied the 'rhs' directory printools from RH to another distro
and had successful printing via smb ... bad that seems a possible
copyright prob with RH? I have no knowledge of 'cups', sorry!
Whatever the case, if you still can't solve the problem, feel free to
email me directly and I will be more than willing to walk with you
through this in more detail ...
Cheers,
Jeff

If you are using LILO there is an otion that can be set to get the
system to use 128M. My system suffers the same problem ... only
recognising 64 of 128M. I think the option is add ... append="mem=128M"
in the lilo setup. I can't confirm the exact string since the system is
currently booted in Windows. Basically it is an instruction for Lilo to
add the extra mem parameter when invoking the linux.

I need to triple boot between windows 98, debian 2.2 (potato) and a

What is the best way to configure it so that I can boot between the 3

I run linux on an AMD 486 without coprocessor. You have to find a
distribution or generate a kernel with coprocessor emulation turned
on.

Insist on an external router. None of this isa card crap. Tell them you

7.0. (Don't know about the other distributions) There is no fix at this

You're absolutely right. I was just pointing out an alternate solution.
(IMHO a better one when it works; append is a bit of a kludge to get around LILO
and the BIOS not talking correctly.)
