I put it in the /etc/boot.local file, and I export any enviornmental
strings there as well. This allows for access to users as well as root.
Hope this helps. Sky

When I installed the OS, I chose the dynamic IP address because I did not have
a fixed IP address. Now I have got a fixed IP address. But the DHCPD runs
automatically everytime I reboot the machine. What I did was I have to kill
the dhcpd process and run ifconfig eth0 to get the fixed address. With the
holiday coming, I won't be able to do it in the office in case there is a
power failure.
Can someone tell me what is the quick way to take out the dhcpd process on
startup?
Thanks for the help.

I have set up my NIC in Red Hat 7.0. That works fine. I am at a point where
I can type the following and I get access:

/sbin/dhcpcd -d -I coXXXXXX-a eth0

Where coXXXXXXX-a is my login ID. That all works fine. Where I have the
problem is on bootup. During the boot though linux has a look at eth0 and
then after about 30 seconds it comes up as failed. So it doesn't connect to
the net at that point. In past linux set ups some how I managed to get it to
connect at that point. Suggestions?

As a temporary work around I just added the line above (/sbin/dhcpcd -d -I
coXXXXXX-a eth0) to the end of rc.d and that seems to do the trick for now.
I would prefer to have it set so that during boot when eht0 is checked it
can connect then. Doing it that way would also reduce boot times a fair
bit!!!

I used the DOS based (floppy) partition magic to get Linux installed. It's
now running and happy.

I just need a way to edit the boot.ini file so I can use the NT boot manager
to start linux. Since I can't login I can't modify the file via NT.

I can mount the ntfs (read-only). I'm scared to use the read/write ntfs
because it might mess up the NT.

Any ideas?

Is there a "dos" like floppy that I can boot from and then access the NTFS
parition? I just need to edit a text file.

Oh who cares?? Linux is about choice, I don't care if linux is not ready
for the masses, (neither is installing and configuring windows from nothing
for that matter) Linux is ready for me, and thousands of other user's.

I guess Windows is not ready for the masses. It can be horrendous to
install at times. However, almost all Win are installed by the seller of
the computer, not by the users. Linux would be trivial to install by the
dealer.

PS almost everyone does not have mouse problems. You either have
something unusual or you answered a question during install wrongly.
Also Debian is not, from what I have read, the easiest distro to
install.

Subject: Re: Help- Setup of Network Parameters
From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Tony)

Does Computer A get to the Internet? If it does not, get it going to the
Internet through the cable modem first.

Has Computer B ever been configured to get to the Internet through Computer
A? If yes, which OS was it running?

I am opposite of you. I am using Linux (at this moment) to get to the
Internet from a Win98 box. The Linux box is dual boot and usually is
running Win98 with SyGate. I am bringing up the Linux portion and had to
get IP Masq working (it is <G>).

Your questions look to be Win98SE in nature. Not having used 98SE, I am
not going to be a good reference. I'm sure though, that there are web
sites that will have trouble shooting information.

The Linux box needs to be configured for DHCP so that it gets its IP
address from the SE box. Otherwise you could attempt to configure the
Linux box for a static IP. Just be sure to use numbers that are considered
non-routable, such as the 192.168.X.X or the 10.X.X.X series of numbers.

Also, configure the Linux box to use the DNS addresses for your ISP. Also
update your hosts files on all computers involved.

Let me know if this starts you on the road to getting it going.

Later.

I would not touch kernel 2.3.x because they are developmental kernals.
If you mean 2.2.x or 2.4 when it finally arrives.
do an rpm install of the kernal and have lilo use the new kernel

# vi /etc/lilo.conf

# start of lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda3
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt

linear

Subject: Torvalds v Gates in next Superbowl Deathmatch? (well, actually an email conf
question)
Date: 19 Dec 2000 06:55:16 GMT

Sorry for the Deathmatch bait. But it would be fun to see... :)

I'm trying to get my Linux computer setup. Happy to be MS free, but I
still have some issues with mail. I want to use fetchmail to get my
messages off the university acct and then use mutt to read them locally on
the linux machine at home. I want to use sendmail (or qmail, if I set it
up) to send messages (MTA).

PROBLEM 1:

The mail I am sending out (with sendmail) does not format the header
correctly presumably since I do not have my hostname setup correctly.
Since the current hostname is 'valinux-system', the message id field in
the header becomes something like:

 Message-Id: <00110118461105.03796@valinux-system>

Posting to the discussion groups I am subscribed no longer works since the
spam filters detect that 'valinux-system' is not a valid domain and the
message is rejected. So I'm cut off from discussions til I get this
sorted out.

But here's where I'm confused: Since my linux computer is a desktop and
not a server that's visible to the internet, I can't imagine *any*
hostname that would correct the situation. I am connected to the internet
via cable modem (att/@home). I have a Linksys router between the Linux
box and the cable modem such that I can share the connection with several
computers.

What's the right way to setup sendmail under such conditions?

PROBLEM 2:

Sendmail takes forever to send a message (about 60 seconds). It's very
annoying. I know it's my fault, but how do I fix it?

Thanks very much for your time reading and responding to this message.
Suggestions as to the outcome of the Deathmatch are welcome.

Paul

I think you are out of luck. This winmodem is neither using the lucent or
PCtel chip set which is usable under linux.
I would email or write to the winmodem chip manufacturer to release the chip
