Subject: Possible to boot Linux with EZ-Bios Running?

I have a GW2K machine with Maxtor's EZ-Bios
allowing my motherboard to recognize larger
hard drives. I installed slackware's Linux and
tried to boot. My machine just reset and went
back to windows 95. This is all brand new to
me, so thanks for your patience.

While I've never run Win2K, I have run Mandrake and 98SE...and I have a tip
here for anyone doing the same. Use grub instead of BootMagic.

ok, here's my current setup...
*i386 (pentium 120) running Debian 2.2 (potato)
*10-baseT network
*hp deskJet 680c (parallel)
*hp deskWriter 680c (serial)

what i need to do... share these printers over the network (mostly for
micro$oft crap/"operating systems")

i got magicfilter and am trying to use it to get the printers running under
linux....but there is no filter made for them...and i don't know the specs
(not much info out there on them). once they work under linux...i'll use
samba to share them.

could you find it in your heart to give me a little step-by-step process
about how to create a "generic" print-que that can allow windoze machines to
print to either the parallel or serial printer?

any info would b great.
thanx
matt

I'm looking for Linux (RH6.2, 2.2.16) support for the floppy drive
connected to the parallel port. This is the only way my Dell Latitude
CPx notebook can work with CD and FDD simultaneously (i.e. CD in the
"standard" bay and FDD connected to the parallel port via special
adapter cable which came with the notebook).

I've tried ZIP modules (ppa, imm) but with no success.

I've heard that such a configuration works under Mandrake 7.2. I use
RedHat 6.2 but I guess that if it can work in Mandrake, it should be, at
least in principle, doable in RedHat distro.

any hints?

regards, Michal.

Well, at the risk of sounding stupid...have you check the directory=20
(/usr/src/linux) for a Makefile? You may not have the full kernel source=
=20
installed....

Have you tried anything else...maybe 'make distclean' before make xconfig=
?

Hi, why don't you try with "sys c:" from a bootable win98 diskette?
Anyway bootmagic is able to save the MBR using its utility WRPRG. take a
look at the online manual

Hi,
I use logcheck to warn me if an intrusion occurs on my system. In this case,
this software is supposed to send a mail to me.
But I don't know if the system knows which mail server address to use.

Thanks in advance,

You could save yourself some trouble and download/install pmfirewall I use it
and it works great. It writes your rules for you.

AFAIK it's the default bootloader installed with Mandrake (I've used 7.1 and
7.2 and they both set up grub during install). And it's a darn good
bootloader IMHO.

Hello,

you can check from the commandline of this server via:

mail -s "test" [EMAIL PROTECTED]
test-text
test-text
=2E
<CTRL-D>

If it gets to you fine, if not your DNS is not correct, or your sendmail
delivers local...

You can set SmartRelayHost in sendmail.cf (if your are using it?)

# "Smart" relay host (may be null)
DSmail.yourdomain.com

Restart sendmail with your init scripts ??/init.d/sendmail restart

I don't know why you want to set POP3 too?

Good luck

905 apparently stopped having its own module and works on the 59x module.
I happened to notice the 3c here was in a 2.4 machine, but still, that's
the way it is AFAIK.

I'm sure that should be documented somewhere.

But with SuSE-Linux 7.0 and ALSA I have Problems: also isapnp found the card
and IRQ,DMA and PORT are set there only a report over WSS(AD1848) in the

no module like sound-card-slot-1 but slot 0 seems to be found. In the whole
there was no sound.
Who can help me?

You should try Demon Internet. They're quite alternative OS friendly IMHO.

Well using DHCP over an PPP connection seems rather strange to me. If you
can connect you just have to put Freeserve's DNS servers in
/etc/resolv.conf. When you are connected in Win98 you can see what they
are with the programme "winipcfg". Just note them and use those in Linux.

You can use the tool "netconf" in Mandrake Linux to configure your
networking. You can also specify your name-servers with it. Also you can
create a PPP connection. I don't know KPPP, but netconf creates a sort of
system wide useable network configuration. If you create a PPP connection
with Netconf you can use the scripts invented by Redhat, ifup and ifdown, to
control the connection. These scripts can ofcourse be called from all sorts
of GUIs and scripts. I use a nice WindowMaker dockapp to control my Demon
PPP Connection for instance.

Hope this helps :-)

Good luck.
