I've run linux with GUIs on 486s. Stick to small windows
managers. If you can find it / afford it, more RAM will help. I
generally run console mode on machines with <32 MB RAM, and have heard
less than 16 MB RAM can be a problem. Obviously, you will not want /
be able to run large GUI aps (including large GUI windows managers).

You may need to use older text installers. For example, Suse's
YAST2 wants >32 MB RAM, but YAST is still included in the distribution
(and should still work fine on your machine).

Such .img image files usually fit on a floppy (they are designed to).
If yours dose not, then you may either have a floppy with bad blocks
(so that it is too small for the image) or perhaps be having problems
with the MAC writing PC disk images. Try another (new, 1.44 MB floppy
with all good blocks) floppy, and possibly try writing from a pc.

Subject: RPM won't install glibc rpm errata for 5.2
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 17:31:40 GMT

Hi, when I try to run rpm with the following command (as root and the
file is in the current dir):

rpm -i --force ./glibc-2.0.7-29.4.i386.rpm

The following error occurrs:

Only major versions >= 3 con be installed by this version of RPM glibc-
2.0.7-29.4.i386.rpm could not be installed

My version of rpm is 3.0-6. I also downgraded to version 2.x, but same
result.

My original build is from RedHat 5.2 and I upgraded the kernel to
2.2.5. All seemed fine for months until now that I need to upgrade
glibc so I can install Sun's JDK.

Running the rpm on the packages that came with the 5.2 CD works fine. I
tried to upgrade to rpm ver 4.x, but the same error occurrs and the new
rpm cannot be installed.

Any Ideas? Help?

How does one cure that problem without deleting all the partitions and

Subject: SCSI Adaptec 1510 ISA card & trouble, see BODY
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 16:47:19 +0000

Hi,

Shoved a working Adaptec SCSI card from my NT box into my Linux box (It
has a ZIP drive and scanner attached), recompiled the kernel, could not
find my exact card in the cards list and did the usual:-

cd /usr/src/linux
make menuconfig
make bzImage
make modules
make modules_install
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/jill2.2.12-scsi
cd /boot
pico /etc/lilo.conf (edited it etc)
lilo -v -t
lilo -v
reboot

But when it reboots I get numbers all over the screen after it loads the
kernel.

RH5.2, Kernel 2.2.12

Any suggestions apart from, time to update ME kernel?

I noticed this from the .config file:-

sounds good so far, but if your scanner is ID=5 then /dev/scanner ==>
/dev/sg4,
it starts with sg0....

The link is not related to what dmesg or cat /proc/scsi/scsi show.

I own a cheap crap mustang scanner (SCSI I) that runs without a
problem...:-)

Thanks very much, after these steps, I have just successfully compiled

But I have got another small problem ... At "Start Application", I have

You have to change to "boot=" line in /etc/lilo.conf to reflect the
partition that you would like to install it on. I assume you have a boot
floppy, if not, make sure you make one before playing around with lilo.

You need the version listed above. This is in RH's errata.
Look it up sometime, you might want to upgrade other rpms.

Disabling CPUID serial number...general protection fault 0000 -> crash !!!

I looked through the BIOS and there does not seem to be any flags to shut
CPU identity off. I have also heard that if I set the env var

I would have expected to see the adaptec card being loaded by the system
when it booted as a module. On a redhat system I have had, my adaptec 2940
uw card had the modules loaded by the kernel module loader when it "sensed"
there was a need for it or something called a device that required those
drivers.

Does your system see the card when it boots? In other words, does the
aha152x card have a bios on it? I used to use one for a scanner and zip
drive awhile ago but I don't recall if the card has a bios or not. If the
card is seen by the system but not by linux, there could be an irq issue or
perhaps you have set two devices to the same irq. Do you by chance have
another isa card in the system which uses the same irq? Try looking at the
output of /proc/interrupts.

You may have to do a little irq and other homework with isa devices to find
out what irq devices are taking by default. The "device resource busy" line
could mean that linux cannot exclude or provide an irq since another device
has claimed that irq already.

I would also do some detective work to see if the card is seen by linux at
all by cruising through the /proc file system. Especially places like:

/proc/scsi
/proc/interrupts

Sorry I cannot be of more help on this. I have two systems with adaptec
2940 u2w cards which are seen with no problems at all.
