they get marked and arent used anymore. Thats teh point of marking them,
so they CANT be used otherwise your data would be corrupted that gets
place on those sectors. I'd consider getting rid of it if the number of
bad sectors continues to increase. otherwise u are playing russian
roulette wih your data

Yeah, the vger.rutgers computer died. It's the same one that was
used for all the other kernel stuff. Probably linux-

You need more than ftape.o for ftape to work. Here's how it works
on my machine, but be aware that this is for ftape-4.x-2000_11_24,
early versions, especially the ftape-3.x series, are slightly
different. I use a TR-3 tape drive hooked-up to the floppy cable.
In /etc/conf.modules, the ftape specific lines are:
alias char-major-27 zftape
options ftape ft_fdc_driver=ftape-internal,none,none,none
options ftape-internal ft_fdc_base=0x3f0 ft_fdc_irq=6 ft_fdc_dma=2
This way, the kernel modules load auto-magically.
[doug@godzuki kernels]$ ftmt -f /dev/nqft0 status
This is a Iomega 3200 floppy tape drive, (drive type = 0x8882)
drive status = 0x00000009
generic drive status = 0x00040000
(In particular: * door open (no tape) * )
sense key error = 0x00000000
residue count = 0
file number = -1
block number = -1
and
[doug@godzuki kernels]$ cat /proc/modules
ftape-internal 10708 0 (autoclean)
zftape 91692 -1 (autoclean)
ftape 148184 0 (autoclean) [ftape-internal zftape]
I removed the non-ftape kernel module listings so as not to confuse
you.
If you need more help, let me know.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello I'm afraid it's me again.
I'm following the sequence of exercises in a "teach me" book, using a
non privileged user account. One was about switching between KDE &
Gnome. I noticed there was also something called Another Level and
thought I'd have a look and switched to that. The setup couldn't have
installed it properly as all I got was a very plain VT Terminal based
environment, through which a I ran "switchdesk" and it told me that I
would have to re-start X Windows for the change to take effect - it
didn't.
I tried changing back to KDE with the same results. I did notice in
the terminal window a message that "for system defaults, remove
/home/harryb/ .Xclients"
Being a trusting soul I tried this and got the message back no such
file or command - so I assumed that because of the lower privileges
the user account has it ignored the request - it certainly didn't work
or do anything in this account (which I deleted and then re-created
and everything is back to where it was (I had made few or no changes).
The next bit's a bit stupid of me - I ran the remove line (before
recreating the user account) above in the root account, getting the
same message about no such file or command, and assumed that I had
just got some syntax wrong and that there had been no effect.
Startx no longer runs (except for a brief bit where the mono splash
screen comes up for about a tenth of a second and dumps me back at the
prompt. I can see the message "/root/ .Xclients no such file or
directory". Now I guess the command did work and totally clobbered the
ability to run startx under the root account - can anyone help me to
get this account to run startx again please? You'll have to spell
things out for me please as I've only been looking at Linux in my
spare time for the past couple of weeks.

I get an error message when I try to start netcfg on my newly
installed RedHat 6.2 machine.
The error message complains about Python and Kt and I have no clue as
to what that is.
How can I find out???
My Linux box needs ethernet configuration (IP address etc) but netcfg
won't start.
During install I unchecked a bunch of seemingly unnecessary
applications (who needs all this stuff anyway) and I may have
accidentally unchecked some important part of networking.
How can I get what is needed back short of reinstalling Linux?

The solution is to delete a trash file left behind in the users home
directory by a previous install of staroffice. I think the name was
~/.sversion, but I'm not sure anymore, as it was a couple of weeks ago
when I did battle with this. At any rate an 'ls -la ~' should turn up
the guilty party.

But read what documentation?
So far I have downloaded and printed some 2000 pages of HOWTO
documents and I did not even come close to getting all!
What I wanted to have is a fairly secure Linux box for my www testbed
so on advice I decided to not install software I did not KNOW I would

single package icon in the setup screens and deciding which to keep

python is the language that the RH installer runs on, and is required by
netcfg.
Kt is a library.
But... you don't need netcfg to configure your network. It's just a GUI
front-end to the unix commands.

Subject: 45G disk with Win98/RH7.0
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 14:20:38 -0700
Hi,
A couple months ago I added a second IDE drive to my machine, which
uses lilo to dual boot between either Win 98 or Red Hat 7.` The new
disk is 45G, and right now I only have the first 10G or so formatted,
for Linux, and I have important stuff mounted there.
Now I want to create a new 33G partition, formatted for windows so
that both OSes can see it. For MP3s :-)
So I create a new primary partition using cfdisk, of type C (Win95
FAT32 LBA). I go into windows, and reformat the new disk D:. But
it acts weird when I put lots of files there and try to access them
again. DOS fdisk tells me the entire drive is only 8G.
I guess I should have formatted and partitioned the disk from the start
with windows, then installed linux partitions afterwards, but it's too
late for that now.
Am I hosed, or is there hope? I would settle for a smaller vfat
partition than 33G if I had to. Or a way to mount an ext2 filesystem
as a D: drive in Windows :-)
Here's how the disk is laid out now:

How can I use my 56K modem line as a backup ?
If the ADSL goes down, the 56K modem can switch over, then that

Could someone tell me what I need to do to make this happen ?
