Subject: Dell laptop/Redhat network install constipation.
Date: Fri, 29 Dec 2000 22:03:48 GMT
Hi All,
I'm trying to get a redhad/krud7.0 network install working on a Dell
latitude CTX laptop with Xircom RBEM56G-100 combo card.
I'd already installed linux on this laptop via cdrom, and the ethernet
works fine(tulip_cb.o), but now I'm trying to cook up a kickstart
config that will install these laptops over the network.
The short story:
Kickstart failing after successful DHCP with
VC4
<4> "Neighbour table overflow"
VC3
"nodns is 0"
url address is server.foo.com
url prefix is /x
Transferring file from http://server.foo.com/x/netstg1.img to a fd
AND THAT's IT! server logs show no contact.
Manual network-install hangs as post-config'd ethernet can't seem to
contact webserver.(Both DHCP'd and static IP's for
box2install), tried both hostname and IP for webserver address.
No luv from the install.
The Long Version:
Kickstart was puking(via the pcmcia.img image) saying Neighbour Table
overflow after it would get it's DHCP info. The DHCP info all looked
good, but 5 seconds later it would start shoving "Neighbour
..overflow" messages to the screen and hang.
Going back to basics, I used a fresh pcmcia.img disk to boot the
laptop and chose DHCP.
On Vconsole4 it looks like everything is going smoothly with the DHCP,
it gets nameserver,DG, IP and netmask correctly, but can't seem
to find the install server.
Some of the VC4 output....
PUMP: got lease
loader intf: device eth0
intf set: 288
intf: bootserver: X.Y.Z.Z...etc
After giving the hostname of the webserver, the box hangs for a while
and comes back with
"foo.bar.com is not a valid hostname"
Vconsole3 shows 'reverse name lookup failed"
I get the same results when I config the interface with valid static
IP's that have perfect fwd->reverse DNS entries....(Note the DCHP
addrs do NOT have DNS entries for them, thank my company for using
WINS)
I also get the similar non-results if I spec the IP for the server,
and after checking the webserver's logs it appears the box2install
doesn't actually contact the webserver.
Has anyone seen this ?
I checked deja/google and the "neighbour overflow" thing appears to be
an issue with the loopback device, but there isn't really anything I
know of at the kickstart level to sidestep this.
The really confusing part to me is that the modules work fine once the
system has been installed, but the boot pcmcia.img appears to
'half-work'
Anyone got a workaround for the boot-constipation? Please no jokes
about high-fiber network cards...

My ISP gives ADSL with 5 hours per month for dialup.
When eth0 is brought up and comes up FAILED, my ADSL is down.
I use kppp or rh ppp dialer to dial up my ISP.

Unless you have a fairly old box, your ps/2 mouse is using IRQ 12. Did
you move jumpers on the modem to configure it as COM3 ?

I know you can do this type of installation. I'm just not sure of the
specifics.

Hmm,
Do you have a dual boot machine (with win9x)? If so, try erase the MBR and
create a record for windows only (I think that the command is fdisk /mbr).
Then, from your distro start-up disk try to load your linux installation. I
my case when I added the "linear" option everything was OK. Try it. You
never know...

Did you compiled the serial devices for the kernel or as modules? I had a
similar problem when I compiled my kew kernel (2,2,16) with the serials
embeded in kernel, on a SuSe machine. When I "restored" the serials as
modules, the boot was normal. Do not forget to install all serial devices
(read the help, I don't remember the exact names :( ).

If I remember correctly, there is more that one type of fat32 partition.
You may have created one that can reach a max 8GB in size. Try fdisking w/
a Win98 floppy, and recreate the partition (move data off first, of course).

I have an IBM Thinkpad 600 with a 12GB HD and dual win98 rh 6.2. I just
reformated the disk and upgraded the bios to set the system up to work
with Win2k. After I upgraded the bios, the hard drive was not working
properly. I used a HD utility to set up the drive for systems that have
trouble with larger than 8.4GB HD. It worked fine before with Red Hat 6.2,
now put 7.0 on and lilo hung at the L. Right on with changing lilo.conf
from "linear" to "lba32". No more problem with LILO.

Thanks for the advice Fl -- I'll try running fdisk from floppy and see what
things look like, but I'll be reluctant to save changes, because, running
fdisk from Start|Run... in windows 98, the entire hard disk is reported as
having 8GB. I don't think running from a floppy would help that, although I'll
certainly give it a shot. But I don't want to try repartitioning with a tool
that doesn't understand the disks' real size.

You can use /usr/sbin/netconfig pop in initial network values
then you can use linuxconf to configure the network.

"Well" is a subjective term, especially since you didn't mention
CPU speed. I ran Linux/X on a 486SX-25 and it was slow; on my
486DX4-75, it was just fine... and if I recall correctly, that one
started out with 8 megs of RAM. You won't have much luck running
a current version of Netscape on that, though, or some of the apps
other people have mentioned. If you can find a Red Hat 4.2 CD
somewhere, that should work okay. ;)

Well I tried RH 6.1. Just could not get modem and printer to work and
managed to configure sound card and display eventually. Retired
gracefully after a week and consigned box to cupboard!
Ah ha, spotted a very large book called RH Linux 7 unleashed today.
Surely things are better now? Managed to install to hdb with lilo on
that drive so can boot with Bootmagic. Manage to install sound card
and graphics card. CTX display was not listed even though a year or
two old but was able set up at high resolution never the less. Even
detected modem! Sort of able to print to port on laserjet 6.
Followed instructions to the letter to install RHppp dialer but once i
choose isp, just get error message. Big book answers
none................. Then try to use Linuxconf, runs ok but the
miscellaneous services which are supposed to detail modem, printer etc
just gives a further error. Other functions run ok. Seems to be an
error in the RH setup to me. Where do I go from here as the
instructions in book fail because program gives errors? I am sure if i
was an expert these errors could be repaired. Is Red hat so good?
