Hallo Herbert,
it's the same on my machine. I recognized, that there are wrong values =
for IRQ, DMA and PORT in '/proc/asound/sndstat' after execution of
'rcalsasound start'. This values do not match to the one's of 'isapnp'.
I don't know how to force the ALSA-driver to use IRQ, DMA and PORT
configured with 'isapnp'.
As a workaround I followed the manual of the SuSE Linux 7.0 Distro and
installed the 'opso'-package of the 'pay'-series from CD. After doing
'./ossinstall' und starting the driver with 'soundon' it works.
To use the shell-command 'play' for playing .wav's, there is need to
install the 'sox'-package of the 'snd'-series from the Distro.
I'll try to get it run with ALSA too, but I think it will last some
time.

The 0.96 version does not have that, but it displays a report saying how many times the
buffer was not full. Every time, it said that it was empty 0 times... So it should be
OK... still it isn't...

My CD is wasted. Something must be burnt in it. Once it went through such missed
processed, it is no longer reckognised as a valid support for cd writing, even when
using a Windows driver on Windows environment. Once I have called the "verified burnt
image" on a non burnt CD, I can no longer do anything with it.

I got RH 6.0 installed but apparently my XConfig is not right cause the
Gnome virtual desktop comes up huge so I can't get at more than the top of
it. Alt+Ctrl++/- doesn't do anything. I've read up about editing the
XConfig86 file but I can't find it logging in as root. Is there a way to
back out of Gnome to a plain terminal, find that file, and edit it?

Hello,
press CTRL-ALT-[F1-F6] and login as root
make a backup of your /etc/XF86Config
vi /etc/XF86Config and make your changes..
Change the runlevel with your initscripts, to bring X down and up again.
Depends a bit on your distro, lookup /etc/inittab to see which one is the
right...
init <runlevel>
or
telinit <runlevel>
Good luck

True my system name is not the same as the ISP username that I use to connect
with. But I've double triple checked all the files/confs and all are using the
ISP username. However reading one of the HOWTO a few minutes ago made me think
that the auth I'm using and the ISP is using are not compatable....I need to

Just because something isn't recommended doesn't
mean that MS-DOS won't do it :)
Actually, I doubt DOS has anything to do with it,
the beep is more probably in your machine's BIOS.
The kbd controller probably generates some spurious
int 9's when [dis]connected. Your mobo has BIOS code
to detect and reinitialize the kbd. It may even have
"self-healing" fuses. But Linux replaces all
of BIOS and doesn't have this re-init code.

No, it means that SuSE distributes software from other companies that is not
GPL. Therefore, if you don't pay them for the distribution, you don't get
the extra-cost software, the value-added hardcopy documentation, etc.

AFAIK fips is a tool to change the size of an existing partition without
loosing data (like Partitionmagic). You should use fdisk from the Linux
CD to create new partitions.

I'll get to play with this (rewrite) when time permits.
I was more concerned with the "philosophical" viewpoint than real
practicalities. It's a pity that there's no Usenet.Apache group.
Leastwise I haven't found one. I've read as much as I can but this

It looks to me like the kernel got loaded but it can't find init or in other
words the / directory where linux is installed. It is asking you to tell it
where to look. I'm no expert on this, but I can think of a couple
possibilities depending on what you have done so far with the system.
Is this a fresh install? I guess it is using LILO. If it is a fresh
install, and using LILO, the only thing I can figure is that something
happened wrong in the installation (I don't know what) or the partition
table went bad or the root filesystem has something wrong with it or the
hard drive is going bad. When you do a fresh install, the installer writes
the lilo.conf file with the root and the kernel location and writes that to
the mbr. That information also gets put on your boot floppy. So it's hard
to imagine how the information got put there wrong.
If you have recompiled the kernel or done something else that moved
partitions around, then that could explain it.
Do you know what partition / is in? If so you can use the floppy and when
it says boot, type 'init=/dev/hdxy' where x is the drive letter and y is the
partition number and without the quotes. It may have to be
'linux init=hdxy' I'm not sure on that. You should be able to pass it with
LILO doing the same thing, only there I'm sure you need the linux.
If that doesn't work, or you don't know, then you can try 'init=/bin/bash'
I'm not sure what runlevel you get with that. It might be single user. Do
'df' to see what is mounted. If / is mounted, you can look at
/etc/lilo.conf to make sure it has the correct root in the stanza for linux
and you can go look for init.
Another way to see what is happening is to use the cdrom and at the boot:
prompt type 'rescue' (It might be 'linux rescue', but I think it tells you
on the splash screen) That will put linux into RAM and no filesystems will
be mounted. You can then do 'fdisk -l /dev/hda' to see the partition table
and verify which one you chose for /. You can attempt to mount that
partition by first making a mount point (mkdir /mnt/redhat) and then mount
with 'mount -t ext2 /dev/hdxy /mnt/redhat' If the mount fails, it will
probably ask you to run e2fsck on the partition. You can safely run it,
because you are not mounted on the filesystem. (e2fsck /dev/hdxy)
Let us know if any of this resolves it.

I do not want to create a "religious war" about Linux distributions but

Find one and start wrestling. If you dont like it after the third install,
go to something "you" are comfortable with!! MAndrake is an esay install as
well as RH. Suse is good but stay away from the 7.0 Professional version.
Dracula's nightmare! Take a close look into your hardware, including your
