Yes you will need extra drivers, but Adaptec does NOT make these... And I
have not heard of any Linux distrubution that does.. Sorry... Buy another
RAID card..
Together with Michael Soibelman I tried to get them to make one, but they
wont..
But you are not the only one, so if I were you, I would bay another RAID
card!

I wonder if I can dial more than one ppp links in Linux?
What I want to do is to use one linux box to dial up to the Internet with
modems and have all computers in out network can share the Internet
connection.
I know it is simple to do so with IPMasq if there is only one ppp connection
(or dedicated connection).
However, I think 1 modems 56kbps is not enough. What I am looking for is
something like 256 or 384kbps. This can be done with 2 or 3 modems or
isdns.
But How to use IPmasq or NAT to share the 2 or 3 ppp connections?

I don't know about your card, but as long as the boot partition is
within the 1024 cylinder limit, the installation should go smoothly.
Debian's installation system is a little obscure, but all the
information you need is in the little pages on the screen. The order
things get done in is important, and when it comes to loading modules,
there is more than one page of menu for some of them. If you're CD
drive is bootable, just put the first disc in the drive and start the
machine.
For documentation, the Linux Documentation Project has it all. I don't
do network things, but have noticed quite a few guides and HOWTOs on the
subject at that site. You may not know it yet, but you are embarking on
a grand adventure. Good luck. G.

Throw that NIC out and go buy a 3c905B. #com has a name for making

A guy i knew swore by his Realtek cards until I asked him how many he

Subject: I need a boot disk to run lilo on /dev/hda
Date: Tue, 02 Jan 2001 09:07:43 GMT
I am looking for a way to boot Linux from a source other than the HD
and still have access to be able to write LILO to the MBR again.
I was going to use my "bzdisk" but it seems to have died a terrible
floppy disk death.
Here's what happened:
I also run WindowsNT (need it for school) and the dual boot thing
(NTLoader + NT mini-HOWTO) worked great on my IDE drive until I did
something bad to the WINNT System partition. So I got a SCSI Drive
and installed NT there. I deleted the NT System partition on the IDE
drive and reinstalled Linux on the IDE Drive.
Now when I did the reinstall I chose to put LILO on the MBR because
that would be the only operation system on that drive. It seemed to
work. I could boot from either the IDE drive or the SCSI drive
directly from the BIOS settings.
This was a pain in my neck. So I tried to get the NTLoader thing
working again. However every time I copied the bootsector over to NT
and then tried to load it. All I could get to appear was LI
So I looked at the file I copied over and then I remembered one of my
fellow Linux users telling me that NT writes data further toward the
beginning of the MBR than LILO does and therefore screws up LILO.
So I ran fdisk /MBR to remove tha old MBR and thought everything would
be coll as soon as I booted into linux and ran lilo once more to
rewrite the MBR. Unfortunately the kernel boot disk I had dosen't
work. So I tried to use the CD and entered rescue mode. Well I don't
know why RedHat put this "feature" on their CD's because I found it
pretty useless. The only devices I can see under this rescue mode are
nonexistant b: drives and my serial ports, along with a few other
things I haven't seen before. Nowhere can I access /dev/hda anything.
Does anyone have a kernel disk I could use to boot my system? All I
really need in the main kernel is e2fs, IDE, Std. Keyboard, and
english support. I think that will allow me to run lilo -v and get
things working again.
TIA,
James

It sounds like USB (busmastering) problems. You may have to
check your kernel source documentation for late-breaking
information about configuring your USB interfaces since this is
recent, relatively 'bleeding edge' technology.

you can mount an NT *partition* by compiling the module that allows the
kernel to mount NTFS partitions or recompiling the kernel with the
driver built in. You can do that w/o Samba however I don't think that
the NTFS driver allows for write access (i.e. read-only)
To access a whole domain of NT stations I'd assume you will need to
install the Samba file server program. That would allow you to also use
a printer that was on the NT network.
I've never worked with a whole domain before (just a single node) but
I've gotten Samba to work easy enough that way.

Hallo to every one and happy new year,
I want to install KDE 2 in Suse 6.3 and since Suse does not have an upgrade
for 6.3,
I tried to compile it by myself. I had some strange problems with qt bu
finally I made it and I started to compile the srpms of KDE2. I managed to
create all the rpm except of 2, Alsa 5.9 and KDE Base. I did not find any
error message in Alsa so I just downloaded the rpms of a previous version.
The major problem is KDE Base package.
I tried to compile it with the rpm (rpm --rebuild --target=i686 --quiet) and
I had always an error message for cdda_paranoia and something more for some
procedures or classes that make could not find. So, I decided to compile it
from the tar.bz2. make was succesful BUT, make install was not. I could not
understand way, and finally I went to the source code and found a very, very
strange .moc file in kicker/applets/clock directory. Bollow you can find the
error message as well as the .moc file. Obsioulsy the .moc file is not a
C/C++ file.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank you

Not sure, as I did the installation in a different way -- I used the
alternate installation method, installing the actual source into the kernel

I have a microsoft optical mouse. It uses a USB interface but comes with a
PS2 adapter. I recently installed Mandrake 7.2 and out of all the 10 times
I've rebooted (with mouse pluged-in, duh) it has worked once. That was when
I was using it on a USB port. Now, everytime I go into Linux the mouse won't
work (it works, because its getting energy from the USB port, but the
pointer won't move). I think it might be a problem with X, because now my
monitor is displaying very weird images when I log-on. This is not a,
so-called, exotic system. AMD Athlon 750MHz, 128 mb RAM, Asus K7V
motherboard (built-in sound card), Voodoo 3 2000 AGP, Microsoft Intellimouse
(optical).
Any sugestions? Meanwhile I have to stick to windows.... please help....

Probably a moc-version problem.
Make sure that you use the moc that comes with KDE2
(/opt/kde2/bin/moc). This might result in a chicken-and-egg-problem,
of course...

I've seen it reported as working fine. Obviously you'll have to install
PCMCIA support. Debian may or may not configure it for you, can't say
it's been to long since I installed from a distribution. Last time I
installed the PCMCIA package everything went fine and the PCMCIA-HOWTO

Subject: VMWare - It's GOOD!
Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2001 02:56:51 +1300
Hi Folks
I have NO connection whatever to VMWare. This is simply a record for
others of what I have done. I looked for a record like this and couldn't
find much....so I'm posting this. It will go into deja.com and be a
"permanent" reference item.
I have just installed VMWare....this morning.
I have not played with any Windows emulators / virtual machines before,
so these comments are uninformed by any other experience.
I installed RH 7.0 this morning onto my DELL CP-J750 laptop (PIII-750
with 256MB of RAM and 12 GB disk).
I have 5.5GB in Win98SE and 5.5 GB in RH 7.0....plus the swap partition.
(Thanks to Partition Magic 6.0)
I downloaded VMWare Express (US$79). I installed the RPM version.....in
about 3 seconds flat.
I followed the install instructions for creating the virtual
machine.....including a 2GB virtual disk within my /home/steve/VM
directory space. It also asks you how you want to handle ethernet
connectivity....I opted for "bridge". The VM initially had 48MB of RAM,
but I have since increased this to 128MB for the VM...leaving 128MB for
my Linux system. This seems about right.
Comment....the virtual machine is "powered on" by pressing a button
along the menu bar of the VM window and boots like a real PC within that
window.....complete with a Phoenix BIOS (F2 to enter setup). I could
boot DOS, Win98 emergency disk and a WinME emergency disk....with CD
support. You can click on a button to make it full screen if you want.
I installed Win98 by booting the CD into the VM and beginning the
install. The install went fine. Initially, you only get 640x480 with 16
colours. But after the install is complete, you add the "VMWare Tools
for Win9x" which include an SVGA driver and some other stuff. I now have
it set to 1024x768 x 32-bit colour.
Setting up the network was simple....just do what you would normally do
on your LAN for a new PC as far as TCP/IP is concerned. I haven't tried
any other protocols, so far.
I Pfaffed around a wee bit trying to get the modems to work.....but made
progress when I used /dev/cua0 instead of /dev/ttyS0.....and disabled
and removed (in Control Panel -> System) the superfluous com3 and com4
Windows created...which hogged the IRQs and kept COM1 and COM2 from
working.
I then upgraded the Win98 install to Win98SE with the update CD for that
purpose from MS. This went just fine.
I still don't have the sound going in the Windows environment. I'm not
convinced I have told the VMWare config the right device name for an OSS
version of the ESS Maestro-3i ES1983a. Sound work in Linux for some
things....like playing CDs. Haven't tried real Player yet - in either
environment.
I haven't set up printing yet, or file / print sharing.
I have installed the AT&T Business Internet service dialer. It uses my
external USR Sportster 56k. It connects just fine to both the Internet
and my companies private intranet.
I have also installed Lotus Notes 5.01 into the VMWare Win98SE virtual
machine and it went fine....as did ALL the incremental quarterly updates
it took to bring Notes to v5.06. My notes client is now replicating my
mail database from the server via the dialup to the office LAN.
But whan I hit alt-cntl-esc.....I can see both the Linux desktop the
Win98 desktop (in a window on the Linux desktop). The Linux environment
uses my LAN connection to my 2MB cable modem for Internet access...while
the Win98 system in the VM only see the work LAN whie it is dialed up.
Once I hang up, Win98 can also see the home LAN and the Net via the
virtual ethernet card....just like real Windows.
So far, this is pretty cool...and it wasn't hard....though a newbie
would have choked on the serial port IRQ conflict issue.
I do have an isue with the CDROM and VMWare warned me of this while I
was setting up the environment. If you have a kernel above 2.2.15 or
below 2.2.17, your Win98 environment will see data CDs as audio CDs. I
did see this behaviour, but it has not been consistent. In once case, I
was able to logout of my normal linux user, then login to ROOT, see the
CD in Linux....then log back into the normal Linux user - start the VM -
and could see the data CD in Win98 properly within the VM. My kernel is
2.2.16-22...standard with RH 7.0.
I have yet to print or make a noise...so we will see. But so far, this
is SO cool. I may finally be able to ditch native Windows from my
laptop....though this VM version is essentially the real Windows running
on a completely software PC.
I may post more as things progress.....or not. :-)

Well, no. The firewall box is working as expected. It sends stuff ok,
but the other box doesn't receive it. I can see this both by the
tcpdump output and the lights on the hub.

Yes, it's starting.

Nope, same configuration - routing tables, addresses, etc.

Yes, it's the right driver (3c509).
I tried using another network card (3COM as well), but same result.
Thanks

Well, I got another newbie question. My sound card isn't working. HardDrake
knows its there, and it seems to be the correct sound card but I get no
sound. Ever.
The sound card is the built-in sound card from the Asus K7V motherboard. It
uses an Apollo chipset.
I appreciate any help I can get. Thank you in advance.
