Subject: Newbie Questions Printers File System Mounts
Date: Wed, 3 Jan 2001 16:00:44 -0800
Been at this a week. Been FUN! Haven't booted into windows since.
Two current puzzlers.
1) I have a printer (HP Laser Jet) shared on a
roomates win2k box (with Unix print services installed) I would like
to make this the default printer availiable from pine and from X
applications like netscape. I also have samba installed on my debian
install. I've been trying to figure out how to map this printer for 3
days now and have as yet been unsucessful.
2)How to make persistant a mount of a share on that same windows box.
I can do the mount through the command line, but if I restart the
linux system that mount goes away and I have to redo it each time.
Any assistance would be appreciated. (Please reply to group and to me
privatly. I'm still working my way through over 4k messages in the 8
linux groups I am trying to catchup in and might not be able to revisit
this one for a few days.)
Thanks!

Sorry I haven't upgraded to 7.0 due to all the bugs in it so I have no
idea
what they (RedHat) have done to the system other than to use a buggy
compiler that even Linus says will never be supported at least the
version
that 7.0 uses.
I have found in the past to wait until version X.1 or X.2 come out
before
upgrading if I don't want the headache.

Subject: parellel zip disk problem ...
Date: 04 Jan 2001 00:15:41 +0000
Dear all,
I keep having a problem with trying install my parallel port zip-100 disk,
sharing the parallel port with the printer. I'm using an oldish kernel
(2.0.30, Slackware 3.4), which should be fine when both the lp and ppa
drivers are modules, and then manually rmmod one or the other module,
depending on what's needed.
However, I keep getting the same error:
PPA: unable to initialise controller at 0x378, error 2
(and something like 'port not available at 0x378', sorry, lost the exact
message now)
when trying with insmod ppa ppa_base=0x3bc, I get
PPA: unable to initialise controller at 0x3bc, error 1
I tried pretty much everything: many different ports and IRQs, build a new
kernel with the PPA hard-linked (which gives the same error during booting);
switch on the zip drive while before/during/after bios load; tweak the BIOS
epp/epc settings, all to no avail.
The zip disk works fine under windows (no funny letters on the cable, so it
is not the newest version which might be incompatible; I think imm.o is not
needed, ppa.o should be OK?). The printer (canon BJC-4300) also works fine
under Linux.
I am a bit hesitant to upgrade a fairly convenient/customized system to a 2.2
kernel (tried it, but results in having to upgrade so many other things that
it's prolly necesary to to a backup (to zip disk ?-) and reinstall.
Any pointers are much appreciated,
Philip

You need both RPMs and then do something like this:
rpm -Uvh kdelibs-blah-blah.rpm kdelibs-sound-blah-blah.rpm
(install both at the same time)

Date: 04 Jan 2001 00:27:32 +0000
Hi all,
sorry if this is the wrong newsgroups, but I just did afew kernel recompiles
(see previous messages :) and all is well, except that I can't mount my DOS
partition anymore:
[MS-DOS FS Rel. 12,FAT 16,check=n,conv=b,uid=0,gid=101,umask=002,bmap]
[me=0xf8,cs=8,#f=2,fs=32,fl=0,ds=32,de=0,data=32,se=0,ts=2048193,ls=512]
Transaction block size = 512
VFS: Can't find a valid MSDOS filesystem on dev 03:01.
The /etc/fstab line is:
/dev/hda1 /dos vfat uid=0,gid=101,umask=002,quiet 1 2
Nothing but the kernel has changed, and it has support for fat, vfat and
umsdos compiled statically in to it. I have no ideal why my old
kernel actually does work, as it's the one from the distro (2.0.30 kernel,
from Slackware 3.4).
Oh, and I'm using loadlin for booting Linux.
Again, any help is very greatly appreciated. Cheers,
Philip

Add a line to /etc/lilo.conf which specifies the total amount of memeory
in your system.
Use your favourite editor ("vi" is an editor available on nearly all *nix
systems and therefor a must know, but if you don't know the keycodes
difficult to use, pico might be a more usefull option as the
instructions are displayed continuously)
pico /etc/lilo.conf
add somewhere near the top a line:
append = "mem=96M"
and run /sbin/lilo -v

Hi,
1. if you want windows network can access linux
you must have samba network file system.
ps x | grep smb
2. using vi to edit the /etc/smb.conf file.
change the workgroup same with windwos workgroup.
encrypt password = yes
the other default setting is ok.
3. /usr/sbin/samba restart
4. ok
if you have no samba, please download it in redhat with rpm package.

Somewhere a month or so ago I came across an article that talked about
using a couple different packages to undelete files. It had the usual
caveats of "if you overwrote the block you're SOL", but...
This guy ran the packages on his Linux box and got lots of interesting
files recovered. One in particular used the idea that if block x is a
JPEG, then block x+1 is probably part of the same image.
Does anyone know where I saw this article, and which packages were
recommended? Sounds like the kinda thing I want installed, just in
case.

Your initial startup "Mode" is probably listed as "320x240", which is
why you're getting that messy, "magnifier window" effect. You can juggle
the Modes around to your liking, or remove the unwanted Modes altogether if
you want. You can cycle through each of the Modes by holding [Ctrl+Alt]
and pressing [+] or [-]. Create a backup of your XF86Config file and tweak
the settings to your liking, or use Xconfigurator and hope for the best.

what about this error above? does fvwm2 exist in that directory? if it
doesn't then that's your problem. Make sure the permissions are correct
if the file does indeed exist so that everyone can execute it.

have you done a 'make xconfig' in /usr/src/linux to see if the current
configuration has floppy disk support built in? If not then i'd suggest
giving the kernel support.
u might look in /lib/modules/2.x.xx/ in one of the directories there (i
forget which one) to see if there is already a floppy module and if so
just insmod it.

I accidentally changed the ownership of all of my files so that they
were owned by a user. I am using RedHat7. Now, of course, I need to
correct the ownership of they entire system. Where can I find the
correct ownership. I tried changing everything but the two user
directories to root, but I find I'm unable to su from that user, or
shutdown the machine as that user, only as root.

Remove the capital letters for the proper address.
I'd rather not re-install if possible. I had a lot of trouble getting
my e-mail to work properly on the last re-install (about two weeks
ago).
Thanks in advance,

DO NOT stick a SIMM,DIMM, or RIMM, in a PCI OR ISA SLOT unless u want
to buy new components.
add the following to your /etc/lilo.conf file and afterwards run
/sbin/lilo:
append="mem=98M"
that should do it, reboot afterwards for change to take affect and dont
forget to run /sbin/lilo after u edit the file and before u reboot.
btw, this problem is in many faqs/posts so a little searching would have
found the answer

Subject: Kernel compiling errors

Hello all,
I'm fairly new too Linux and need some help with the following:
I'm trying to compile 2.2.16-22 and am getting the following error:
make -C arch/i386/lib
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib'
make all_targets
make[2]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib'
gcc -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/include -D__ASSEMBLY__ -traditional
-c checksum.S -o checksum.o
checksum.S:231: badly punctuated parameter list in #define
checksum.S:237: badly punctuated parameter list in #define
make[2]: *** [checksum.o] Error 1
make[2]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib'
make[1]: *** [first_rule] Error 2
make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/linux/arch/i386/lib'
make: *** [_dir_arch/i386/lib] Error 2
I've been running 2.2.16-22 for sometime now with no issues but would
like to slim it down a bit.
It seems to compile fine until this point. My Configuration is:
Red Hat 7.0 running 2.2.16-22
AMD ATHLON 750MHz w/ 128M
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
