Subject: Plea for help with booting.
Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 10:05:26 GMT
Recently I installed Mandrake 7.2 on a machine that previously ran
Win98 (and Slackware Linux 3.(x?), but I reformatted that partition for
Mandrake). After a few hitches, I got it working. However, it
automatically set itself up to boot from the linux partition, loading
GRUB which then gave me the option of booting Windows, Linux, fda0,
etc...
This was kind of okay, but it wasn't what I really wanted. I wanted it
to automatically boot Win98, and only boot Linux if I used a boot disk
(this is because other people have to use the machine, and I don't want
them to have to worry about new setup screens).
So. I fiddled around with the settings within Mandrake Linux, trying to
make it to do this. I made some sort of mistake that caused it not to
load Windows any more when I asked it to; if I selected Windows from the
menu, it would reload GRUB (the bootloader).
This was not good.
So I fiddled around with it some more, and clearly I made another
mistake, because it then said "disk error" when I selected Windows from
the GRUB menu.
This was even worse.
I believe that one of the two mistakes I made was to tell the GRUB
bootloader to install on /dev/hda1.
I fiddled around with this until 3 am, and couldn't fix it. I've now
managed to patch together a Win98 boot disk that works, so I can load
Windows from that. However, I want to return the boot sector to its
original, pre-Linux Mandrake state. Clearly this is what I have on the
boot disk- it works exactly the way it used to, except I need the boot
disk.
So.
How can I (a) make the hda1 partition the bootable one, and (b) set it
up the way it was before (I fear that telling GRUB to boot from
/dev/hda1 has changed that boot sector).
I know that I can do this by making a complete hard drive backup,
booting from my Win/DOS disk, and saying "format c: /s", and then
transfer the software back. I _really_ don't want to do this. There must
be a way of transferring the boot sector on my floppy disk to my C
drive, partition 1 (/dev/hda1) without reformatting the entire drive.
This may not be what I should be trying to do at all, but it's what
seems logical to me. If anyone knows of any way I can either do what I
have suggested, or do something else that will have the same effect,
please help.
Another option has just occurred to me. It's possible that my Win/Dos
boot sector has not been touched, and all I have to do might be to
change the bootable partition from the Linux partition to the Windows
one. I remember from my Slackware installation that cfdisk can do this.
If that's all I change, am I right in thinking that it won't destroy any
data in the main body of the hard drive when I write that change?
I may have used some terminology which is incorrect, so please feel free
to correct me or ask for explanations of what I mean.
Also, I may have omitted information you need in order to help me- I
don't know. If there's anything else you need to know that I haven't
already said here, please tell me, and I'll give the information as soon
as I can.
Thankyou very much to all who have bothered to read all this, and
thankyou even more to anyone who can help.
____
Another note, directed at the people who put Linux distributions
together: I think I am probably not alone in feeling that it would be
nice if I were prompted before the boot sector of my computer was
changed. For me, the ideal scenario with a Linux setup is one where
Windows or Dos will boot without any interference from Linux unless I
put a boot disk in, in which case Linux boots automatically. Because of
Linux's great ability to unmount and remount the root device, booting
Linux from a floppy disc is often a very good solution to the dual-boot
question, especially since other users of the computer don't even need
to know that Linux is there on the machine- it can operate exactly the
same way after the installation as before.
Had I known that Mandrake Linux would automatically change my boot
sector, I simply would not have installed it. I appreciate that the
people who put together the installation program can't be expected to
think of everything. That's why I'm telling you this now, so that
hopefully the bootdisk-only option will appear as a standard option in
future distributions.
I also appreciate that I may be unusual in my particular desires for the
way it should install, but I think I am probably not alone in feeling
that something as important as the boot sector should not be
automatically overwritten as a standard part of the installation
procedure.
Anyway, I'll stop rambling and complaining. Please, if anyone can help
me, it would be very greatly appreciated.

It could be one of a number of things. The problem with -test (and
development) kernels is that they may not be stable. By running test
kernels, you implicitly agree that they may break, and that if they do,
you'll generally either help to fix the problem, or ignore it and hope
someone else fixes it.
I would suggest going back to a 2.2 kernel, maybe testing each new -test
kernel to see if it fixes your problem.

Hi everyone,
Sorry if this is already answered, but I would like an answer quicker than
looking through all the different newsgroups.
My problem is right down in the basics.
I want to setup an ftp server that will allow users to login to their own
directories to update websites etc. I don't want them to be able to go
above their own directories, but want to give full access to their own ones.
Any advice would be greatfully appreciated as the help files that I have
looked through are not very clear (maybe I just don't grasp the way they are
saying the stuff)
Thanks in advance

Can you get Win9x to load from a Win9x boot disk? I know this isn't a
solution, but it's what I'm using as a stop-gap measure (I'm having a
somewhat similar difficulty, see my post "plea for help with booting" or

OK, so I've successfully installed Red Hat 7.0 in a separate partition from
Windows 98. I can boot either successfully and even use a DOS window in
Win98 (which had been playing up on my first attempt).
But... can't connect to the Internet through Netscape. All my Dialup
settings have been checked and rechecked. Clicking the Debug button in the
PPP Properties connects to my ISP OK, identifies the logon prompt and sends
my user name and password. However, lauching Netscape Communicator and
attempting to connect to the same ISP by clicking the HOME button or GOing
HOME results in two messages:
NETSCAPE ERROR:
Warning: the following hosts are unknown:
home.netscape.com
home6.netscape.com
internic.net
This means that some or all hosts will be unreachable.
...bla bla bla... name server...
...bla bla bla... non-root server...
...bla bla bla... $SOCKS_NS environment variable...
Consult your system administrator.
(...which is not much use because as the only user I *am* the system
administrator)
and:
NETSCAPE ERROR:
Netscape is unable to locate the server www.seol.net.au [my ISP].
Please check the server name and try again.
(the server name is correct.)
Netscape does not even get as far as the modem. There are no modem noises,
no flashing lights and no modem-related error messages.
Running RHPPD Dialer and clicking on the Connect button displays a dialog
saying START INTERFACE SEOL? Clicking on Yes displays a warning: FAILED TO
ACTIVATE INTERFACE. Again there is no evidence of an attempt to connect to
the modem. Interestingly, once the connection has been made via the Debug
button (see above) the RHPPD Dialer prompt is to Disconnect from SEOL.
Need I say that any help would be appreciated...

Subject: problem with pppd
Date: Fri, 5 Jan 2001 11:44:08 +0100
Hi there,
I'm experiencing a problem with pppd.
I used netcfg to create a ppp interface. I provided all the basic
information according to the ppp-HOWTO.
But... It doesn't work.
According to syslog:
- my computer connects to my provider
- I log in.
- pppd starts up
- there is a disconnection after a few seconds
Syslog says that I need to provide the remote IP.
("Could not determine remote IP")
This is strange. This is what the HOWTO says:
"(...) you do not need to specify the Remote IP address (the address of the
PPP interface on the server to which you connect). "
I found the errormessage that occurs in the ppp-FAQ:
"This happens with many configurations of the Telebit Netblazer."
- What is the Telebit Netblazer?! Did I use that? Didn't think so!
FAQ:
"Use the local IP address and the remote IP address as a parameter to the
pppd process."
In short: The FAQ says I have to provide both local and remote IP but the
HOWTO says I don't.
I personally think the FAQ is wrong. How could I provide local IP if it is
dynamic?!
Anyway,
My questions:
- What IP should I provide? (Which one do I have to ask my provider?)
- Do I have to provide an IP? Is there some workaround?
Thanks!

Hi,
I am quite new to Linux, but I've been using info's dos-port for
a couple of years now.
In Dos you can set the environment variable INFO_COLORS, and
info will use the values you set and come up in your own, eye
pleasing colors. This seems to have no effect in the text
console (no xterm, just text) on my Linux box. I couldn't find
anything in info's documentation, either.
Does anyone know of a way to set info's colors?
TIA,

Hello,
Did you select the correct CPU?, as 2.4.0 is very sensitive to the correct
CPU selection. In fact, it did produce a simillar problem in my computer
and I have found out that I had Pentium III selection while my computer is
having Celeron processor.
Is this the same behaviour with Linux 2.4.0?
What version of LILO you are using?
Are you meeting the minimum recommendations as mentioned in
Documentation/Changes document.
Thank you,
Hari.

Then either one of us misunderstood.
He boots linux through a floppy and windows from the HDD.
That's what I understand from the problem.
If that's is not what Maarten meant, loadlin is no solution indeed.

Hi,
this week I have upgraded a computer from debian 2.1r4 to 2.2r2, the
process went very smooth and all seems to be fine. My problem is when I
try to get the kernel (2.2.17) to detect the SmartRaidV controller. I've
downdoaded some patches from adaptec's web site and followed the
instructions but either they don't apply cleanly, or kernel compilation
dies or the computer gets unusable (load average over 6 and SCSI bus
hanging).
Currently I'm running the old 2.0.36 kernel with SmartRaidV support but
I would like to upgrade the kernel too. Any one has experienced the same
problems? any clue?
Happy new year and TIA

How about booting from a windows floppy then when you get to the A: prompt
type fdisk /MBR. You can then boot windows automatically and use a linux
boot floppy if you want to boot linux.

Hi
I don't think you can recover old password. But if you've forgotten root
password for LInux, then in the LILO prompt type "linux -s" to boot in single
user mode. It does not ask for any password. Then you can give passwd command to
give the new passowrd.

Siva
