i experience the same problems with a new compiled 2.2.18 kernel,
dec21143 driver compiled into the kernel (no module).
network works fine in the beginning,
but dies somehow-
i have to ifconfig eth0 down and up to have it working again.

i found out with some smbmount and filecopy (konqueror), so i thought
its maybe the kde2 or the smbfs not working properly.
havent tested a lot yet.
i maybe will switch back to 2.2.16 for a while, and await the 2.4.1 or
2.4.2 kernel releases.

Okay, sorry about the length of the post. Here's a briefer version:
I have installed Linux Mandrake, and it changed the master boot record
so that it boots to the GRUB bootloader. I believe that something I did
later in trying to fix it may have caused it to write that boot record
onto my DOS/Windows partition as well (although I am not sure about
this). I want to change it back so that it automatically boots the
DOS/Windows partition the way it did before I installed Linux. Can
someone tell me how to do this?
Any help will be appreciated. If you need more specific information,
please ask me or refer to my original post. I would be very grateful for
any help anyone could give.

yo

first of all, Sorry for not being explicit enough in specifying the problem.
I indeed CANNOT boot from HD, really nothing -> not a system, insert system
floppy or somthing like that. The only way i can boot is with that 1 floppy
(made through the installation of suse) which let me do the lilo boot and
only accepts linux for good. i can touch the win files when mounting the
vfat in linux. Just like lichen_dragon said...
I can boot from a win98 recoverydisk and reach just the command.com. The c:
is then ready to use. But if i ant to start win the system halts because of
some trouble with the vfat. I have seen other people reportng this as a
common feature.

lba32
this is to enable booting with more than 1024 cylinders
install=/dev/boot-menu.b
menu-title="suse"
these are to provide a menu. Those lines came from the suse site and should
be
placed in the general section, which i hope is right on top of the file :-|

All docs talk about just exceuting lilo to make things work. Well i did and
its still the same : i cannot start from HD. Put it in the MBR! Ok, how?
None
of the docs said something explicit about how to do that, except for : run
lilo.

running /sbin/lilo -C - -b /dev/fd0 -v -v -v
as marked in the manual on /usr/share/docs/packages/lilo
always stuck. I have to type 2 keystrokes(a,q) before he stops. He didnt
even
touched the floppy!!

Reading boot sector from /dev/fd0
Merging with /boot/boot.b
Device 0x0305: BIOS drive 0x80, 255 heads, 1655 cylinders,
               63 sectors. Partition offset: 20482938
warning: device 0x0305 exceeds 1024 cylinder limit
geo_comp_addr : cylinder is too big (1275 > 1024)

So how can i make a good boot disk, and best of all how can i make it start
from HD, with the win system available.
I saw that fdisk /mbr could fix up the mbr for a dos partition. All dos
books went silent on that topic, it looks like i dont even exist. Is it a
myth or is it an unsupported feature? Is it safe to use , does it destroy
yer partitions, ... ?

I feel were coming closer to a solution. Thnx for everyone to help me.

Sorry lichen_dragon i cant help you, i dont even understand it all but i
think i would feel more comfortable in your possition.

That didn't seem to do anything, unfortunately.
What, precisely, does fdisk /MBR do? I tried it from both the a: and c:
prompts (restarting after each one) and neither seemed to change
anything.

What it sounds like is that fdisk /MBR will write the current master
boot record to... somewhere. Where is that? Do I have to specify the
source or target MBR? Whatever the reason, it didn't seem to do
anything. Can I find the man page for fdisk somewhere on the 'net?

I just realised that I left out one development. I don't know whether
it's important or not. When I choose "windows" from the GRUB prompt, it
starts typing "01 01 01 01 01 01 01" and looks like it'll go on
endlessly.

Don't use this, unless you have a bootfloppy for linux.
You will not be able to boot anything after this.

It's not the MBR you hosed, but the bootsector of hda1

That's completely clear, isn't it? DON'T DO THAT. Your boot partition
is too big. What's your problem?

If you want to boot from above the 1024 cyl mark, read the lilo docs
and see what you have to do. You will have to remove the linear option
(probably) and add lba32 to your lilo.conf. Then you'll have to hope
that your bios supports that call.

But the real answer is: Don't Do That. Make a SMALL boot partition. Put
it somewhere universally accessible.

This is more like it,

Unfortunately I don't know GRUB very well.
I do know that LILO first copies the original bootsector it overwrites
to a file.
That way by running lilo with the -u switch, you can restore the old
situation.

I do not know if GRUB has such a feature (It should)
With LILO would need to look in /boot for a file named boot.0301
Check /boot for a file like this. The size will be 512 bytes exactly, or
446 bytes exactly.
(Depends if the partitiontable is copied too)

If it exists, use the -u switch equivalent of grub, or dd it back (Be
carefull)

Okay, just use the lilo.conf file I gave you.
It's pretty general.
Use it and have fun.

It's an unsuppported feature, though you need a recent FDISK.EXE or else
it won't be supported.
Just try it. It will not destroy the partitions, just rewrite the MBR
bootcode

How do i make it that small? If it always could be that small then this

that mean it's probably in glibc in release 5.1 and maybe I

My Mandrake 7.2 uses xinetd instead of inetd.

Check with ps -eaf and see if inetd or xinetd is running.

If xinetd is running then inetd.conf is ignored, check the file
/etc/xinetd.conf and the directory /etc/xinetd.d

You have to install the telnet server package.

are you trying to connect as root? This is per default (security) not
allowed.

Is telnetd running on your RH box? Normally started from inetd (look in
your /etc/inetd.conf)

type apropos telnet and read the shown man pages...

Good luck
