Helps tremendously Martin, thank you.
After a kernel build I'd been making "mrproper" thinking this would be
a nice state to leave the source tree in, but looking at the Makefile
I see that this deletes "version.h".
I conclude from this then that:
a) "make clean" is the happiest state to leave the kernel source tree
in after a kernel build
and
b) it's necessary for the source tree to be present in this state
before a lot of programs can be compiled, or is it only necessary for
/usr/src/linux/include/linux to be present - which is linked back to
/usr/include/linux? (my head's spinning)
Forgive me, I'm quite new to all this.
Thanks again
Harry

In Linux the commands for systemmanagment etc. are located in
/sbin or /usr/sbin
So do a
whereis sndconfig
then type the whole path to the command

Hiya!
I've got a x86 box running SuSE 7.0, and I'm using it to share out the
drive on both netatalk and Samba, so that I can copy files between MacOS
and Windows. However, Samba doesn't automatically start when I turn the
machine on. I have to pull up a terminal, and type something like :
cd /etc/rc.d/init.d/
./smb restart
It seemed to stop working when I was halfway through installing netatalk
manually, before I noticed that it had been pre-installed. Anyone got
any ideas as to what I've done? Or failing that, where should I put the
above lines so that I can fudge Samba to start automatically?
Cheers,

Hiya!
I've got SuSE 7.0 running as an Intranet server out of the way in a box-
room at the back of my house. I also have a pair of rats living in a
cage in there, and quite a nice view out of the back window. Purely as a
waste of time, I fancied buying a cheap conferencing-camera, and setting
it up as a webcam showing either the rats, or the view outside. How good
is USB stuff under Linux at the moment? Are there any daemons knocking
about for this kind of thing? I was hoping for something along the lines
of a daemon which would grab an image every 30 seconds or so, and then
write it as a GIF to somewhere in my htdocs directory (so that it could
be accessed from Apache).
Cheers,

I'm using PM 5.0 and resized the root partitions of Red Hat and SuSE a couple of times

However, I can't say whether it would always work or not.

Tell me it ain't so. Just got Samba running. RH 7 install. I just had to
add users to the samba passwd list in order to prevent getting "Can't make
IPC$ Connection supply password" sort of message.
I got this fix off the samba docs.
Someone tell me that I won't have to do this for all 700 students?! There
is no way to let samba see that the user name and passwd that the Win98
client used is the same as in the passwd file and let them in?
Thanks for any thoughts on this

Dan's suggestion about file permissions got me peeking around. There were
some permission issues. Mostly, in the 'world' level.
So, I recopied the filesystems, this time... using --same-permissions in tar
and things worked fine.
Thanks for your help...

I have a RH 6.1 working system on my slave drive. I duplicated it on my
master drive, in an effort to free up the slave drive so it could be used in
another machine.
I just finished verifying that everything works as expected. It was quite
painless actually.
However, I am having a problem making a working boot floppy for my new
system.
I used 'mkbootdisk --device /dev/fd0 2.2.14-1.5.0', which happens to be the
note I had written on the boot floppy that works for the slave drive.
I am able to get into it the new system by using an old boot floppy and
typing 'linux root=/dev/hda7' ( where /dev/hda7 is my new root partition ).
Any ideas on how to make this boot floppy work?
Does the lilo.conf settings have anything to do with the 'mkbootdisk'
command? I don't see the relation, but it does boot with LILO so I figured
I'd ask.
Thanks,
Ted

What port is your mouse attached to? If it is on Com1 then your modem
should be on either Com2 (/dev/stty1) or Com4 (/dev/stty3) to avoid
interrupt conflicts.

Thanks. That did the trick. I hadn't been able to find any syntax for the
hosts.lpd, so I made it look like hosts.allow. When I switched it to a simple
list of host names like you said, (and restarted lpd) the queue on the FROM
machine popped right into TO and printed without a hitch.
Where is the layout of this file documented? I couldn't find it in man lpd or
man printcap or the Printing-HOWTO.
Thanks again,

I have found that the 'NE-2000' compatible cards are very old and don't have a
MAC assigned to them.. They mostly work on the broadcast method.. Look for
a good 3COM card.. I've been using various 3COM cards for years and love them
a lot.. Never a problem with Linux.. I started with RH5.2 and now running
RH6.2. Good Luck!

I've been able to get a USB Logitech Quickcam Express to give me a video
stream using some really alpha stuff that Georg Archer is working on and
developing. it can be found at the following link:
http://www10.informatik.tu-muenchen.de/~acher/quickcam/quickcam_doc.html
And capture it with a little X video grab utility, but as far as
anything else, I'm lost as a ball in the weeds.
I know people use WebCams with Linux. There are a number of them up
around the web.
The video4linux home page is:
http://roadrunner.swansea.uk.linux.org/v4l.shtml
And will get you started in the right direction to research it all out.
It's really been a motivator for me to dig in and start learning c++ and
some other amenable languages in order do something about it myself, but
I'm a long way from that point yet.
The only thing I've ever been able to get out of my Intel PC cam is for
Linux to recognize it as a pointing device. ;-( Seeing eye mouse I
guess. Kernel panics when the cat walks into the room if I leave the
privacy shield open.
The video and USB drivers are in the kernel package as far as I know
going back to 2. something with a patch, and the 2.3 versions on up to
the current 2.4.0 for the IBM "C-It", the Kodak DC-2xx series and the
CPiA(which I'm totally unfamiliar with)
I've got a Kodak DC-2300 that has a USB memory card reader that I'd like
to be able to use under Linux also, but.... I ain't there yet.
But, I remember a point in time when I was told, that damned parallel
port Mustek ain't never gonna work in Linux, but I kept looking and one
day about two years ago I stumbled across a guy named Jeff who had made
one work and I've been reaping the benefits of his labor every since.
;-)
Best wishes and best luck.
