I believe that if you can boot to the new system
then edit lilo.conf
 replacing root=/dev/hd??
with root=/dev/hda1 or whatever you used as your mount point for /

then run lilo
reboot
then make a boot floppy

Ouch. I can't really see a way of getting around that... maybe some sort
of Perl or shell script could be written to do it if you had all their
information in a nice neat formatted file...

try 'mkbootdisk $(uname -r)' This should prompt you to insert a
floppy, just hit <Enter> and it'll make a proper boot disk for you
using the currently running kernel.

Hmm.. Strange... I have set up three boxes with NE2000 - and they have
different MACs. Also they worked just out of the box (but I had to specify
io and irq).

However there were two cards, which I simply gave up on - but the one I
could not get to work in Windows either (I didn't try with the two others
as they had to be linux-only boxes).

Subject: How to recover partition
Date: Sun, 7 Jan 2001 17:29:04 +0100

Hi

A few days ago, I installed some new RAM. And suddenly I got a lot of
segfaults and at last a kernel oops in kreiserfsd...

When I rebooted, the kernel reported 'Unknown partition table'...

Now I luckily had a backup of the most important data - but there is still
stuff on the partition, which I wuld like to recover...

The disk was filled with only that single partition, which was formatted
with reiserfs.

Is there any way to recover the partition table (I know this means making
a new) and recover the old partition data?

With normal ext2, I coul make the partition again and recover the old one
from the backup-superblock - can anything like that be done with reiserfs?

Thx in advance from a panicky user.

Works fine here. Matrox G400 MAX with Red Hat 7 straight out of the box.
Had no trouble at all with a G400 16 MB Single head with Red Hat 6.2.

AFAIK it is supported with XFree86 4.0.2. So just choose a distro with
this version of X - or upgrade after the installation.

If you want to install it manually, you can get it at www.xfree86.org.

i386 should do. But you could also choose i686 - this is AFAIK the native
mode for the Celeron.

Got the boot disk to work. Don't know why it didn't work before. The
commands were supposed to do the same thing.

FIRST (didn't work ) : 'mkbootdisk --device=/dev/fd0 2.2.14-1.5.0'

SECOND ( worked fine ) : 'mkbootdisk 2.2.14-1.5.0'

The mkbootdisk man page says that you can profide a device, or it will
default to /dev/fd0.

Strange!!!
Thanks for the replies.

hello

I used PM 3 just today to do the same as you want and it went no problem.
I put pqmagict.exe on a dos boot disk. Pm will recognize the partion, you
select it , delete it, have free space, and
you can create a new fat32 partition or you can resize your win partion c:
to the max size it will indicate you.

You seem to be a bit inconsistent about what you did the first time.
According to the man page for mkbootdisk in my RH6.2 system, there
shouldn't be an '=' in specifying the device.

I found what was wrong. The modems irq is 5. Needed to setserial
/dev/ttyS2 irq 5

I can't help much, but quite a few OSs seem to be quite flexible, or
even stupid about how they allocate port names to physical port
resources.

What's Fallout 2 ?

When I was installing Linux, I don't think I had access to any package
descriptions even though I'd purchased boxed RH 6.2 for Alpha.

When I got the OS loaded, Netscape didn't work well which stopped me
looking at some HTML docs.

Apart from that, making sense of package descriptions and any
documentation requires knowledge a newbie simply may not have, even if
they have prior Unix experience.

That's fine if you know up front how flexible RPM etc are.

I assume the way you tell it which serial port to use is described in
the readme ?

The exasperation of the experienced users is as much of a problem for
the novice as their considerable generosity is a benefit.

Linux still has many problems that are not dealt with by a simple RTFM,
FAQ or README.

Personally I'll stick with it because the open source idea is so great
and my first install so promising, but I hope Linux 7 proves less broken
than 6.2 !

"ALTERNATIVE CONFIGURATION FILE
For historical reasons, if /etc/modules.conf does not
exist, modutils will read /etc/conf.modules instead.
However the use of this historical name is deprecated and
it should be replaced with /etc/modules.conf. This
version of modutils issues a warning message if
/etc/conf.modules exists, later versions will give an
error message and refuse to load modules."
