Non whatsoever. I'm comming from the DOS world and want to give up on
Windoze - eats too much ressources. My main platform is a 96 meg DS
HP200LX palmtop running plain DOS software :)

Yes - but no, as I will not have the time availlable to do so.

No need to be the first in an avelanche.

Yes - it's also for my kid's which might investigate further on.

In the beginning I'll be comfortable with preinstalled versions and
wizards. Maybe I will catch up with the command line and the configs.

Important but again - no time to read.

Yes, sorry. I've picked some groups out of the linux family and now
gradually reduce spreading myself.

I would like to add a sendmail rule to sendmail.cf, but i'm no good at
sendmail ;)

if a message's "To :" line contains more than one recipient, that message
must be recreated for each recipient, with only one recipient on the "To :"
line

how would I do this?

I had exactly the same problem with an Athlon CPU, specified as such during
the configureation phase. When I changed the CPU type to "K6", the
compilation worked fine and I am using the resulting 2.4.0-ac4 kernel with
no problems at all. I have no idea why the compiation fails when the CPU
type is set to "Athlon".

Subject: RedHad6.1 installation fails!
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 10:03:07 GMT

Hi,

I am trying to install RedHat 6.1 on my new HP LC2000 system but the
installation does not see the hard disks. The error message given
is: "An error has occurred-no valid devices were found on which to
create new file systems. Please check your hardware for the cause of
this problem."; thus the installation fails.

If I try to install Win2000 everything ok. The disks I have on the
machine are: 18.2GB 7200 Ultra3 Wide SCSI-3 HS HDD and 9.1GB 7200
Ultra3 Wide SCSI-3 LVD HDD.

The SCSI controller, which by the way is on the motherboard, is
SYM53C896; by www.symbios.com.

I am almost sure that the problem is that the kernel, I have 2.2.12-20,
does not have the correct SCSI controller driver on it; or rather one
that works.

MY ACTIONS:
===========
My goal is to create a 'driver disk' with a patched device driver for
the controler and provide it to the installation, in expert mode, so
that it can load it.

I have patched the .c files of the driver; got the patch from the
controller manufacturer, and I:
make mrproper
make config
make depend
make

so now I have a new .o file for the controler.

The problem is that I do not know how to make this 'driver disk'. This
'driver disk' has to have an ".img" in it but...
What do I do? How do I get the new driver in the 'driver disk'?

Hope it is clear what my problem is. Thanks for your help.

Any other ideas other than the one I am pursuing?

Regards,

Haris

Eh, I got an oops with a kernel compiled with 2.96. So I installed 2.95.2
and use it instead (2.96 also broke compilation of other packages too).

Subject: install win95 over linux
Date: 10 Jan 2001 11:35:26 +0100

The worst case has come:
A linux user (that's me) has to install windows 95
on a disk containing linux.

Situation:
partition #1: linux (40MB)
partition #2: linux (50MB)
partition #3: free for win95 (5GB)
rest : linux (a lot more GB)

I have absolute low experience with products from
braindead-m*cr*hard since the old times with win3.11,
so I better ask before:

Does anyone know whether windows 95 will
let the linux partitions survive during install?
(I am aware of the fact that lilo must be reinstalled
after windows installation)

Is there a secure way to force windows 95
to take partition #3 as drive C: and ignore other
partitions?

linux-fdisk may do some of the job.
Which partition type should be choosed?
Or should I delete the partition completely

Thanks for any hints,

Markus

P.S.: please do not discuss the reasons for installing
win95 after so many years without trouble, but sometimes
life is hard, and we must struggle on for some while ...

I guess the reason for zayin getting both messages is that they both
have the same "To:.*" line and thus get processed by the same rule. Tell
procmail not to "bail out" after a match (IIRC ":0c") and both zayin and
daniel should get two messages... get daniel an account of his own :-)

1) dd if=netstg2.img of=/dev/fd0 bs=1440k count=1

eth0 is a virtual device , it doesn't have an entry in the /dev
directory.

The eth0 device is created at the detection of the network card, so if
you have fi instance a 3com card model 509 you load the module 3c509:
        /sbin/modprobe 3c509
The you can configure the network with ifconfig and route.

The make the module load at boot time add it to /etc/modules withe the
command:
        echo "3c509 alias eth0" >> /etc/modules
Some network drivers need additional information such as io range or
irq's. That information is stored in /etc/modules.conf
        options ne io=0x220 irq=5
which also gets some information from /etc/modutils.

The configuration for netwrok is stored (old style) in /etc/networking

/sbin/ifconfig eth0 192.168.2.1 netmask 255.255.0.0 broadcast 192.168.255.255
/sbin/route add -net 192.168.0.0
#sometimes there is a default gateway:
/sbin/route add default gw 192.168.1.1

or in /etc/network/interfaces (which is the new style)
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
        address 192.168.2.1
        network 192.168.0.0
        netmask 255.255.0.0
        broadcast 192.168.255.255

AFAIK both can be compiled as modules, so the kernel bloating is not
really an issue. With the kernel module loading the modules will only be
loaded as long as they are needed.

I'd go for USB.

On newer distros, it is called /etc/modules.conf (at least newer RedHats).
