Which windows are you opening? It is possible
for terminal windows to have transparent backgrounds
which causes this effect (some people really like it)
If this happens with all windows, something's pretty
messed up. :)

You should build a new driver - there is a 2.4.0 patch on the
www.linuxgames.com site which you need to apply to the source tarballs for
0.9-5.

They will "know"; the only difference with the way you partitioned it
and just using a single partition is that the folders like /usr are
now mounted on a partition instead of the root drive. It's like
mounting your cdrom to /mnt/cdrom or /tmp/cdrom, you can mount it
whereever you want, it's seemless to the OS, it just treats it like a
normal folder, except it has your cd data in it....
>The same question holds true for uninstalling programs.
>Where are the majority of programs going to install?
Depends on the way you want to install it. If you use a package
management system like rpm or dpkg, you'll have to find out from
there. I usually compile all my stuff from source and install it to
/usr/local, but that's just personal preference

pppd can only connect you too an daiup isp using a modem. the
internetconnection with your laninterface normaly is not made to be a
daiupconnection. i gess you have an adsl-connection to your isp. the
ads-potocoll is a protocoll for standing conections and if your landevice
has connection to an adsl-modem it uses tct/ip to contact the internet. for
dailupcapebillitys on this connection you need a special deamon. i use
pppoet for a connection to t-dsl from the german telecom. if you don't use a
modem to connect to the internet any more you have to make shure that pppd
is not started atomaticly when the system starts, otherwhise you will olways
get errormessages from pppd.

Hi everyone,
On compiling up to arch/ppc/kernel/head.S, I got a error message:
/usr/src/linux/include/asm/mmu.h: Assembler messages:
/usr/src/linuc/include/asm/mmu.h:10: Error: Unrecognised opcode: `typedef'
Can someone explain why I'm getting this error message??
I understand that *.S is using assembler language but is this normal?
BTW, I'm using gcc 2.95.2 and glibc-2.1.3 for compiling. Hopefully, it's
not gcc at fault, 'cause I really don't think I want to downgrade my gcc
version to use egcs-1.1.2.. Thanks for reading!

the daemon error. Why can't I have both pppo and eth0 working at the

the internet from my notebook with Apache. It must be a configuration
issue?Turbolinux 6.0 Kernel 2.2.13-12 i686,SMC Ultra ethernet card.
The error in the ppd log is something like need a secret password in

Thanks for reading this,
I am trying to mount (dev/sda4) a Zip 100 USB drive under Kernel 2.2.16
(Suse 7.0). The modules usbcore, usb-ohci and usb-storage are loaded, but
yet the system fails to communicate with the Zip drive. While booting up the
system it finds the Zip drive. The error message is:
sda: Read Capacity failed
sda: status=0, message=00, host=7, driver=00
sda: sense not available
sda: block size assumed 512 bytes, disk size 1 GB
sda: scsidisk I/O Error: dev08:00, sector 0
unable to read partition table.
My USB Sony CD/RW drive is also seen but can not be mounted. I think it is a
SCSI issue, which I have tried to remedy with the insertation of module sg,
but that did not help either. Perhaps somebody has an advice for me, any
input is appreciated.
Thanks,

Am I correct in assuming you mean the Windows Network Logon protocol, i.e. you need to
logon to a Windows NT domain to use the network resource? (the gateway!)
If so, Samba should be able to do it. I've only done this on peer-to-peer NT networks,
but it worked there, and Samba does know about NT domain controllers and how to talk
to them.

My favorite method of deleting all entries in a directory (when the
number of entries is very large) is
tar cfv /dev/null /path/of/directory/to/empty --remove-files >
/dev/null
and then just rmdir the directory if required....

I've run into some difficulty with our kickstart server and RedHat 7 - it
appears that the new bootnet.img tries to use NFSv3 for nfs installs, and
that it is failing when trying to mount from a Solaris box. We have been
using this server for kickstart for both RH6.0 and 6.2. I have no
problems getting an installed RH7.0 box to mount the shares - only the
bootnet.img disk has this problem. Below are tcpdumps of the two
sessions - one for RH7-bootnet.img, and the other for RH6.2-bootnet.img.

Name : MAKEDEV
Relocations: (not relocateable)
Version : 2.5.2
Vendor: Red Hat, Inc.
Release : 1
Build Date: Thu 02 Mar 2000 03:35:22 PM CST
Install date: (not installed)
Build Host: porky.devel.redhat.com
Group : System Environment/Base
Source RPM: MAKEDEV-2.5.2-1.src.rpm
Size : 30690
License: none
Packager : Red Hat, Inc. <http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla>
Summary : A script for creating the device files in /dev.
Description :
This package contains the MAKEDEV script, which makes it easier to
create
and maintain the files in the /dev directory. /dev directory files
correspond to a particular device supported by Linux (serial or printer
ports, scanners, sound cards, tape drives, CD-ROM drives, hard drives,
etc.) and interface with the drivers in the kernel.
You should install the MAKEDEV package because the MAKEDEV utility makes
it easy to manage the /dev directory device files.
