Two to try are:

PuTTY - http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/
NetSarang - http://www.netsarang.com

PuTTY only emulates an X-term text window but it works OK and does
colour coded text. It supports both telnet and ssh protocols

I haven't tried NetSarang yet, but its on my list for when I get a
round tuit. It should do the whole desktop bit. Its not free, but at
$70 per PC its a lot cheaper than Exceed.

PuTTY won't. NetSarang probably would.

Well, most peple in the alt.os.linux.caldera will probably be pro-caldera.
So am I and can only say that I have tested about 8 of the big dists out
there and I like Caldera the most.

I dont know what kind of problem you are refering to but I have no problem
with reliability with my Caldera box. If you have experienced problems with
more than one dist, perhaps your hardware aint 100%?

Well, it is no problem installing gmome on a Caldera box. The FAQ
covers this.

Many of the RedHat/Mandrake rpms will work on a Caldera box but best
is ofcourse to use the Caldera-rpms or to just compile it yourself. Its
really not that hard at all.

I think the 'pro buisness user' is much marketing stuff. I use my box
only for developing and as a normal desktop computer.

I think you are wrong here. gcc 2.96 was NEVER meant to be 'on the market'.
It is not stable and shoud only be used if you want to try it out, NEVER
in a dist. Red Hat is totally to blame for that but then again, all their
latest X.0 releases has been crap. If you are going with Red Hat, go 6.2.

Hi everybody, and sorry if this has been asked one hundred times ...

How is it possible to REMOVE the timeout disconnexion time from a RedHat 6.2
server ?

I mean, on several machines (but not all - why ???), after 5 mn being
connected via telnet without action, I receive the famous message "connexion
closed by foreign host" ...

I know that removing this creates a security hole, but what if the machine
is a internal developpment one ?

Thank'you !

I'm upgrading glibc from 2.1.1 to 2.1.3 on Redhat 6.2 using the rpm.
After running 'rpm -U xxx.rpm' I get a bunch of conflicts, all of them
having to do with the 'localedata' package of my current glibc. Any
ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Mandrake 7.2 does not shut down properly
Date: Thu, 11 Jan 2001 09:12:25 -0600

Since upgrading to Mandrake 7.2, shutdown is not able to shutdown. When
"shutdown -r (or -h) now" is issued, the system reports that various
processes are being shut down until I reach the message "No more processes
this runlevel". At that point the system hangs. It is not dead; a
Ctrl-Atl-Del, for example, generates disk activity. But it will not
continue. I have to hit the reset button to reboot. This is a particular
pain because the disks don't get unmounted, and so I have to wait the 5 or
6 minutes or so for fsck to do its thing.

The problem appears to be independent of the kernel. The problem began
with the 2.2.17 kernel that comes with Mandrake 7.2, but remained after I
upgraded to the 2.4.0-ac6 kernel.

Any ideas or suggestion would be appreciated.

Hi Eric,

Here is an update. Just now, I realized that ReiserFS support might need be

the patch file for 2.2.18 kernel. I patched my kernel and am in the process

Try out the University's of Berlin free Usenet feed. One can subscribe

newsgroups however and they're strict on one providing a valid e-mail
address and on Spam postings.

On my system restart has always worked and shutdown has never worked.
With 7.0 and 7.1 it used to give a core dump.
With 7.2 it gives a screenful of error messages.
I restart into Win98 and shutdown from there.
