Dselect has a separate agenda. It maintains its own lists of things
that it is waiting for a chance to install. Fortunately, it usually
can't, because it needs local media.

This is the correct answer. (I have used dselect exactly once,
a long time ago now, and it made my head ache, so I never have used
it since).

No need to think. A mobo that doesn't accept its own bios IS faulty.
But check out very carefully what you think you have and what you do
have.

I assume when you reformatted the Win98 hard drive, you wanted to use it
all for Linux.
During installation, delete the FAT32 partition, and put in the linux
partitions you desired.

Hi I'm a novice at Linux but eager to get it up and running.
However, I have had numerous problems trying to configure X and after
trying numerous combinations I managed to get a good resolution and
everything when KDE opened (after fiddling with it for days!). But the
cursor remains 'stuck' at the top of the screen and jumps madly about
when I move the mouse, but it won't move anywhere but along the top of
the screen.
I am using SuSE 7.0 with a GEForce2 MX card on an Athlon 850. With XFree
version 4.0.2.
Any suggestions gang??

That you configure the right mouse type for your mouse. Is this not
obvious? If you are using a usb mouse, don't. But how can I know,
since you don't say?

Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 10:40:15 +0100
hi,
I am trying to configure a linux box for masquerading/firewalling.
the configuration is not the classical one and I would need some advises.
now I could just buy a 2nd nic card, but I am curious and I would like to
make it work that way.
- adsl modem is connected to the hub via uplink
- the linux box (myoldbox) is connected to the hub via eth0
(debian stable 2.2.18pre21 running pppoe 2.6)
+ the connection to my isp goes through the ppp interface ppp0
+ eth0 is the only ethernet interface (1 nic)
- other machines are connected to the hub (1 nic per machine)
q1? is this configuration as safe, efficient, reliable as having the
gateway 'physically' routing to the private network (with 2 nics) ?
and that is my current problem
q2? in this configuration, how do I configure the routes, translation and
ipchains ?
the private network mask is 192.168.0.0
loopback interface is up
eth0 on myoldbox is up with address 192.168.0.1
eth0:0 on myoldbox is up with address 192.168.0.2
( I guess this alias interface is needed in that case for
routing purpose, not sure ? )
thanks for your help, any pointer appreciated,

Subject: Can't get RH7 to configure my NIC
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 09:41:25 GMT
Hi all,
I am new to linux. I have just installed Red Hat 7 on my HP 8610 (Athlon
600 Mhz). The installation seemed to go well.
After I installed RH7 I installed a PCI D-Link DFE-530TX+ 10/100 NIC. I
checked the RH website to confirm that the card is supported. I expected
Kudzu to detect the card when I next rebooted, but it did nothing. I tried
to configure the card using linuxconf, the driver was not automatically
selected, so I chose rtl8139.o (from RH website). When I rebooted the eth0
said that initialization delayed.
I checked the IRQ and IO from windows and put these values into linuxconf.
When I tried to ping another IP address the message said that the network is
unreachable.
I though this may be a problem with my BIOS, but I can't see how to disable
any PnP settings in the BIOS. I changed the slot that I installed the card
in but Kudzu still did not detect it.
I looked at the websites I could find that I thought might help. I tried
the suggestions in the RH Ethernet-HOWTO but still could not sort out my
problem.
Any help that anyone may be able to give me would be greately appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Carl

Subject: Re: PATH statement - an FAQ?
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 11:17:45 +0100
I take it you mean the PATH system variable.
It's actually pretty easy. Whenever you type a command, the shell has to
find what you're talking about. It searches the different directories listed
in the PATH variable to see if there's any executable file with the name you
just typed, and if so, launches it.
The directories are stored in the PATH variable with the following syntax:
directory:directory:directory: ...
eg: /usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/bin
To modify you PATH variable, provided you're running bash, you just need to
type export PATH=$PATH:new_directory.
eg: export PATH=$PATH:/usr/local/jdk1.3/bin
The 'export' command is used to make PATH a system variable, not a shell
variable.
Note that you usually want to make those changes 'permanent'. To do that,
edit your profile's script and put the command. There's two script where you
can put that: .bashrc and .bash_profile. It's strongly recommanded to put it
under .bash_profile, as .bashrc is parsed every time you start a new
instance of bash, and the PATH variable will keep growing, while
.bash_profile is only parsed once.
Hope this helps.

I succesfully installed the KDE2 envriroment in my Suse Linux 6.2. In order
to do this, I upadated my gppshare.rpm so that I now have the libc6.1-2.so3
library. The KDE2 enviroment works fine, however Netscape 6, that worked
fine with kde1, now crashes with a message about libc.6.1-.....so2. ( I
suppose the previous library). Can I make it work under kde2? Can I have
both kde1 and kde2 working in my linux box? What can I do to restore
kde1?THANK YOU VERY MUCH!!

Subject: Cmi8330 Audio Problems
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 12:07:52 +0000 (UTC)
Hi,
I have the CMI8330 sound chip built into my motherboard running Red Hat
6.2 (Kernel 2.2.18) I managed to get isapnp to detect it and I use the sb
module (I couldn't get the ad1848 module working with it)
The only problem is, the sound is distinctly lacking in any bass (low
frequency sounds). This is not me being fussy, as it's much better under
Windows, and under Linux my sub switches off because it's not getting a
big enough signal, causing me to lose all sound.
I have checked the mixer settings and these are fine. I was wondering if I
need to pass any special options to the sb module or if there's any
alternatives? Has anyone else had this problem?
TIA,
Joe.

I don't care much about the modem, i have a DSL connetion now , so i'm not
in need of the modem. Though i'd like the sound card component of the card
to work. Isn't there any free driver or something ? ..Cause for 30 bucks i
can get a semi decent used sound card.

Didn't really like that book, too much of "install this software" and too
little of the background.
Better to check www.beowulf.org and I also recommend

Subject: xfstt problem in SuSE linux (2.4.0 kernel)
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 13:22:22 -0000
I've compiled a 2.4.0 kernel for SuSE 6.4 on an i686- no problems there. The
machine boots to runlevel 3 (equivalent to RH runlevel 5) without any
problems. And I get to log in and use KDE. Everything works (printers,
disks, mouse, keyboard, graphics card, monitor, wacom tablet). The problems
start when I log out. Then the screen flashes a few times and leaves me with
a terminal login prompt.
I think I've traced this one to xfstt. The /sbin/init.d/xfstt script start
section currently contains
echo "Starting xfstt"
/usr/X11R6/bin xfstt --sync
startproc /usr/X11R6/bin xfstt --daemon || return=$rc_failed
echo -e "$return"
If I try
# init 2
followed by
# init 3
I get the same problem as before. A quick check on the init scripts reveals
why:
# init 2
# /sbin/init.d/xfstt start
returns "failed". But
# init 2
# /usr/X11R6/bin xfstt --sync
# startproc /usr/X11R6/bin xfstt --daemon
# /sbin/init.d/xdm start
restarts kdm successfully
Any suggestions for how to get /sbin/init.d/xfstt to work? I've tried
putting a sleep command before the startproc in the hope that would give
xfstt --sync time to finish, but that didn't work. Could I try to get the
xfstt PID with checkproc and wait for it to complete before executing
startproc? If so, what would the code look like? Or is there a simpler way.

one thing to check is that the volume label of the cd you burned is the same
