Need to write a installation software for a new application. Do you know any
free code that I can refer to?

Thanks

I've got both working (ZIP 100 + IDE CD-RW using SCSI emulation) without
modules (everything compiled in kernel), and with a "hdc=ide-scsi" line in my
lilo.conf. Works great! Let me know if you need the kernel compile config I've
used (2.2.13).

Whats this all about.. I found it on the net... supposedly you can install
from windows and it's smart enough to let you partition your fat(prolly
diskdruid)  to make room.
I was wondering if it's a recognized version and if it's worthwhile or
should I use Redhat or something instead?
I need to keep using "that other OS" because of my gaming habits and such
but I know about LILO so I'm not worried about that..
When installed it didn't detect netcard or soundcard(because they're pnp)
so how do I install these or as I've said.. should I go back and install
redhat or something more supported..?

Completely new to Linux, I've struggled a bit with this problem but been
unable to solve it. It is most likely some ridiculous little thing I've
done wrong, but still, I cannot get past it. Hence this post :). It's
been fun with small rewards (like managing to get on the internet from
linux) but now I am stuck.

Ok, here's what I get when I try to run X. Got Redhat 6.1 installed.

----
execve failed for /etc/X11/X (errno 2)
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
giving up
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X Server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
----

So I play around a bit trying to figure out what is wrong. I run
/usr_X11R6/bin/XConfigurator, select unlisted card and get the following
error
message:

----
Server doesn't exist, can't continue.
tried to use ../../usr/X11R6/bin/XF86_SVGA

Hm, seems to me I haven't got any servers installed.

What do I do now?

Thanks in advance!

Well you do have to have support in the kernel so download the kernel
that contains support for this device (2.4.0 does) and recompile your
kernel. That is all i can do to help you because I don't have te
experience with Slack, but you should be able to use it some how if
there is support in the kernel. If it isn't there though, you
certianly cannot use the device.

Hi. I'm really new to RH7. A friend gave me their server which has
required a PS/2 adaptor SO I went out and got one. Thinking my problems
were solved and everything will work great. Well, the crazy mouse will
not work.

It's a Logitech mouse. I went to the logitech site to see if I needed
drivers and to search through their help files. Well, they don't support
anything except Windows. I guess my question is, am I screwed and need
to go get a mouse that works on RH7? If so, what kinds work with RH7.

This kinda doesn't make sense to me and should work regardless of the
mouse I use but maybe you people can shed some light on this for me.

Thanks,
Mike

Subject: 2.4 kernel messages
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 19:33:37 -0600

Greetings,

I recently installed the 2.4 kernel on my Red Hat 6.2 machine. The
kernel seems to boot fine, but there are a few bugs I need to work out.
Here is a sampling of error messages greped from /var/log/messages that

occur during system boot up...these concern me.

The third line I find curious. It is as if a map to the modules isn't
loaded...

Jan 13 18:49:42 Taltos kernel: Loaded 15012 symbols from
/boot/System.map-2.4.0.
Jan 13 18:49:42 Taltos kernel: Symbols match kernel version 2.4.0.
Jan 13 18:49:42 Taltos kernel: No module symbols loaded.

Obviously, the error lines are disturbing...

Jan 13 18:49:09 Taltos sysctl: net.ipv4.ip_forward = 0
Jan 13 18:49:09 Taltos sysctl: net.ipv4.conf.all.rp_filter = 1
Jan 13 18:49:09 Taltos sysctl: error: 'net.ipv4.ip_always_defrag' is an
unknown key
Jan 13 18:49:09 Taltos sysctl: error: 'kernel.sysrq' is an unknown key

All of these lines concern me. What is nls and why is there no devpts?

Jan 13 18:49:10 Taltos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module devpts
Jan 13 18:49:10 Taltos mount: mount: fs type devpts not supported by
kernel
Jan 13 18:49:10 Taltos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
nls_iso8859-1
Jan 13 18:49:10 Taltos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
nls_iso8859-1

Hhhmmm...

Jan 13 18:49:45 Taltos modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-14

I've recompiled the kernel, checking my configuration to see if there
are an crucial options I missed which may relate to any of these
errors. But my configuration seems decent...

I've also tried to figure out how devpts relates to the 2.4 kernel, but
I had trouble finding documentation related to this issue. What is
different in 2.4 with devpts? I had no problem with my previous
2.2.14-5.0 kernel...

For some reason, modprobe can't find necessary modules. Is this related

to the "No module symbols loaded." error in the first sample of
output? My modules make & install seemed to go fine during the kernel
build.

Any insight into these errors would be helpful. This is my first kernel

compilation, so please bear with me :)

Thanks in advance to all who reply.

Unforch, although 2 of us double checked each other many times, and built
it for 3 different kernels, the end result was the same, an error list
from depmod, and pretty much the same list from insmod/modprobe.

In other words, it appears we must not have used the right breed of
goats for our sacrifices. Put card in winderz box, works. linksys
really should change their name to linksucks. They put all those
stickers on the box to make us linux folks buy it, but when the
shrinkwrap is opened, it VERY PLAINLY STATES that there is absolutely NO
linux support available from them.

Our suppliers are being told that as far as NIC's are concerned, there
will be no more linksys cards purchased until they decide to play the
game by the rules. Like truthfull labels on their boxes.

Cheers, Gene

Well my Logitech mouse uses the PS/2 driver.
Try using "mouseconfig" to pick the driver.

Subject: Mandrake 7.2 (kernel 2.2.17) IDE autotune problem
Date: Sun, 14 Jan 2001 02:03:29 GMT

Hi,

I just finished installing Mandrake 7.2 on my system. I've noticed that the
hard drive performance on the system is very poor (even though I told
mandrake setup to "autotune" the drives). hdparm reveals that UDMA has not
been enabled on any of the drives. This is odd, since my old Redhat 6.2
installation, which I have installed on the same computer, automatically
enables UDMA. I used hdparm to manually enable UDMA on the drives, and now
the performance (as measured by hdparm -Tt) is the same as redhat...with no
apparent filesystem corruption. :)

My question is, why isn't UDMA automatically enabled with Mandrake? Some
notable differences between the two installations:
1) Redhat is running kernel 2.2.14, MDK is running 2.2.17 and also has the
"Unified EIDE" driver thingy installed
2) "hdparm -I" doesn't seem to work fully on Mandrake. For one drive, it
prints out:
/dev/hda:

Model=ro9 11258D                          ?, FwRev=7293aMtx, SerialNo=4QA1
Config={ }
RawCHS=16/0/13109, TrkSize=63, SectSize=12337, ECCbytes=21304
BuffType=29, BuffSize=11168kB, MaxMultSect=0
(maybe): CurCHS=63/64528/251, CurSects=2084569360, LBA=yes, LBAsects=458752
IORDY=no
PIO modes: pio0
DMA modes:

And after running this, syslog displays the bad-sounding message: "kernel:
stat: 58"

On RedHat, "hdparm -I" for the same drive reveals:

Model=aMtxro9 11258D                          , FwRev=AW8S7293,
SerialNo=8K404QA1
 Config={ Fixed }
 RawCHS=16383/16/63, TrkSize=0, SectSize=0, ECCbytes=29
 BuffType=3(DualPortCache), BuffSize=256kB, MaxMultSect=16, MultSect=off
 DblWordIO=no, maxPIO=2(fast), DMA=yes, maxDMA=2(fast)
 CurCHS=22332/16/63, CurSects=-66060037, LBA=yes, LBAsects=22510656
 tDMA={min:120,rec:120}, DMA modes: mword0 mword1 mword2
 IORDY=on/off, tPIO={min:120,w/IORDY:120}, PIO modes: mode3 mode4

Compared to this, the Mandrake hdparm output seems to be garbage. Does
anyone know what is going on?

Thanks
