I just installed RH 7.0 with the Gnome. I have no idea how I've done it
but when I login as root, buttons appear on the panel when I minimise
something, yet when I login as a user, the buttons do not appear on the
panel. I've tried several things, read all I can find, with not luck.
How can I restore the buttons for minimised applications?
Thanks

Subject: SAMBA not working on RH7 on peer to peer win2k network using DHCP from
maxgate switch/router
Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 21:16:14 GMT
I have a small peer to peer network, consisting of 2 win2k machines
and a linux box. The linux box is running RH7.0. I've downloaded the
various updates and loaded them. But, I cannot get any of the win2k
computers to see the linux box. If I do a network neighborhood on the
win2k boxes, they see each other by machine name. They do not see the
machine name for the linux box, or any of its drives. I cannot ping
any of the machines in the network without using their ip address,
which is assigned by the Maxgate ugate 3200 switch/router. (It is
connecting my network to a comcast cable modem.) I can ping all of the
machines, including the linux box, if I ping the ip addresses. The
ugate 3200 has a table that contains the machine names and dynamically
assigned ip addresses, and it is correct.
I think the problem is that there is, and can be (as I understand it)
no DNS for the network, because it is being assigned ip addresses
dyamically by the ugate 3200. I think this may, also be the reason
that I can't get SAMBA to work, but I don't know, for sure. Also, when
I boot up, sendmail and httpd take a long time, and I get error
messages that httpd cannot identify local host name. (This started
after I used netconf to assign a machine name of chinook, rather than
localhost. I don't have qualified domain names, so I don't use
anything more than a single name, with no extra .xxx.com or whatever
on any of my machines. (Is this a problem? Should I just make up a
random name, or do I need to use the domain name of the comcast
network that is in the router? (I suspect I don't need to do this,
because the windows boxes work ok.) I can also telnet or ftp into the
linux box, but I have to use the ip address rather than the name.
I modified the /etc/hosts file to have only one line, which is
127.0.0.1 chinook chinook
Rather than the original file which said
127.0.0.1 localhost.localname localhost
Normally, I would have put in a line after the localhost line like
192.168.0.6 chinook chinook
But, because the ip address may change, due to dhcp, I don't see how I
can do that.
Also, in SWAT, when I try to set up samba, if I put /, or /home in the
drive to share over the network, all looks fine until I go another
screen and come back, when there are now no drives or directories
listed again.
Does anybody know what I need to do to get things working?
Also, I cannot get my linux box to print to a postscript printer that
is on my network at address 192.168.0.10 and driven by one of the
win2k boxes. I suspect all of these problems are related to something
not being set, but I don't know what.
TIA,
Ed

Once that is done I am going to make this box a PDC with samba server.
All I need now is some help with these three questions, once I get past the
installation I beleive I will be able to go the distance. Besides that I am

is there a way of addressing more than 2 Gb of swap? Yeah, I know 'what does he

little in combination with 256 Mb of RAM. The result was a memory dump as soon

Any help is strongly appreciated.

You might try to simply allocate multiple swap partitions.

You may have had "unclean unmounted partitions" which were not corrected
properly when you last ran fsck. What sometimes happens is that then the
file system attributes get set to immutable.
Try to do a lsattr in the effected directories. Then correct the
problem with chattr. Look at their man pages for instructions.

That was it! I owe you double thanks, one for fixing my problem, the
other for introducing me to file attributes and the ext2fs, which I
hadn't even heard of before. More fun to be had.

In 6.2 you would right click the panel and then choose:
panel/add to panel/applet/utility/tasklist

When I upgraded to 4.76 I had a similar problem so I downlaoded the
src.rpm and rebuilt it on my system and have had no problems since. I
did not make any changes to the src.rpm before rebuilding it and don't
know what rebuilding it would have done.
rpm --rebuild netscape-*

You are asking this question from a deja.com mail address?
search on "kernel", "compile" and "HOWTO".....
Or just go to www.linuxdoc.org and search on "kernel".
Either one will take you 15 seconds.

Maybe use more than one swap partition? Is the limit 2GB per partition?
Or 2GB total?
I know 2GB tends to be a limit of 32-bit addressing.

We tried one partition of 5 Gb and it came up with only 2 Gb. So we split it into two
2 Gb partitions and still only 2 Gb show up :-(
Could it be that it requires certain priority settings, e.g. -1 to -3?

Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 00:35:48 GMT
Hi Steve,
I use SUSE since 5.2 and refer to it as the best dist for my own purpose :-)
However, having a new system myself (Duron 700, GeForceMX, SB PCI128, ASUS A7V) I had
some trouble setting up X, the rest was fine, apart from sound as the alsa version
that comes with it did recognise my SB PCI128 but not support it. A driver update did
the job. The same applies to your SB Live! Get the new Alsa drivers from their ftp
site and it will work.
Even if you had your NIC configured before you went to your printer it could not work!
There is not tool in yast(2) that actually configures your SAMBA network!
I noticed problems with setting up my network in YAST2 as well. YAST1 does it better
and does not like the files created by YAST2 so that is why you should just leave your
NIC alone in YAST2 and set it up later using YAST1.
To get your USB devices running you may want to check in the BIOS for legacy support!
I don't have any such devices consequently do not have any experience with it but in
kernel 2.2.16 there is no real support for USB, well, neither is in 2.4.0 but anyway.
To get your video card running you need to go to the ftp server and download the files
'nv_glx.rpm' and 'nvdriver.rpm' and install those. Then you run 'sax2 -m 0=nvidia' and
it will recognise your card. However, when I tried to update the driver recently to
the latest version it did NOT work so I went back to the second last which is better
on Linux anyway! For 3D support you have to enter a line in the Load Module-section of
your /etc/X11/XF86Config file which is 'load "glx"'. I play very happily Unreal
Tournament and Quake3 on my box.
The thing with the first CD in YAST1 is not a new one, now is it? It has been like
this forever ;-)
Anyway, as mentioned above there is no problems with installing through YAST2 as long
as you don't try to configure ;-)
If you have any more questions send me an email.
Cheers,
Andreas

Find out which serial port your modem is on (ls -l /dev/modem)
and change the permissions on that port, i.e. chmod 666 /dev/ttyS1
(or whatever port). I put an entry in the /etc/rc.d/rc.serial
file to do this on bootup, never have a problem.
Hope this helps.

I'm looking to at long last replace my 5.7 year old Pentium 100 with
something a bit newer. I still plan for it to be relatively low-end
(Celeron or Duron) because it'll be sitting in Linux virtually all the
time serving as a mail/news/ssh/etc server. I'll be spending more
real money on a flashy Windoze box for finance, gaming, and web
surfing.
I see that places like MicroCenter and Staples are running specials on
low-end Compaq Presarios or HP Pavilions or whatever and they are
tempting.
However, despite that the machine will be primarily a server, it would
be nice for it to be able to support X and sound under Linux. And it
would be nice to not have to pay for video and sound cards if the
stuff integrated on the motherboard is supported.
In the ads they say they come with stuff like:
* Integrated Intel 3d Graphics with Direct AGP
* Integrated 3D Audio
* Soundmax integrated digital audio
* Integrated VIA AC97 Codec
I have looked at the kernel READMEs and at the XFree86 web site, but
it's not clear to me if these are supported, since the docs talk about
specific chipsets and the ads and the salesdroids only know brandings,
not what chipsets they are.
So any ideas?
Thanks!

What is the state (both in 2.2.18 and 2.4.x) of UDMA/66 and UDMA/100
support, both in terms of integrated motherboard controllers and
add-on cards (if there is any difference)? I've not been in the
market for new iron in over 5 years, so I've gotten a bit behind on
exactly what Linux is supporting these days. I have gone to
www.linux-ide.org, but didn't find that terribly enlightening - lots
of utilities and patches, but not much clear documentation on what
*is* supported.
And if UDMA/66 and UDMA/100 are not supported, does that mean the
controllers just won't run at those speeds (but will still do
UDMA/33)? Or does it mean Linux won't even see those controllers?
I'm starting to see more machines/motherboards boasting about
UDMA/100 support and I want to make sure I don't buy something
that Linux won't work with.
Thanks!
